FUTA student seeks help as JAMB flags admission ‘seven years after UTME’
by Pelumi Bolawa
June 28, 2025

Olasola Jamiu, a student of the Federal University of Technology (FUTA), has accused the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of flagging his admission as fake after seven years.

Jamiu claimed he was admitted into FUTA in 2018 after a successful Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) in 2017.

He said he discovered that his admission was fake after graduation in 2024.

Jamiu said the situation denied him the chance to go for the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC) after the school said “the portal rejected my details”.

The student claimed all efforts to rectify the situation was unsuccessful, including an investigation by the police, and a probe by the management of FUTA.

“After spending seven years in school, I registered for JAMB and wrote UTME in 2017 to study Civil Engineering. Since 2018, I have been a student of FUTA and I graduated in 2024,” he said.

“However, after my graduation, JAMB said that my admission granted seven years ago was fake. They provided no evidence, only their inability to access my details on the JAMB portal.

“After my final clearance, I was supposed to be deployed by NYSC. However, the students affairs office informed me that the portal rejected my details. I was asked to verify my details on the JAMB matriculation list which indicated fake admission.

“I was infuriated by the message and so I reported at the JAMB office in Akure but I received no message. I was informed that I was supposed to be apprehended and a handed over to the DSS for investigation.

“After all failed attempt, my only option was to submit myself to the DSS, hoping that this will fast-track the resolution.

“I spent hours at the DSS office and was later transferred to the police. My school admission officer verified my admission status. I was later bailed by my friend from the police custody.

“Later that day, I was told a report will be forwarded to the JAMB office in Abuja. But up till this moment, JAMB head office in Abuja is yet to acknowledge the report. I have not given up on my quest.

“So far nothing appears to be working. I feel incapacitated. Even the vice chancellor is uncertain on what step to take. I plead for assistance from all Nigerians.”

‘INSTITUTION SHOULD FIGHT NOT THE CANDIDATE’ — JAMB REACTS
Reacting to the matter, Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, said the board recently deleted some candidates with fake admissions from its system.

Speaking with TheCable, Benjamin clarified that if there are discrepancies in admission, it is only the concerned institution that should raise objection and not the student.

He said the institutions should be responsible for validating the status of their students.

He added that in a case where the students is leading the fight, “then there is something wrong somewhere”.

“I am aware of candidates that had fake admission that they were deleted from the system. The process is that every admission to any tertiary institution must pass through JAMB,” he said.

“So if a candidate is not on our system and then he is going to fake a false admission letter or whatever, certainly he has a fake admission letter.

“I am aware of such candidates who had claimed that they were admitted into institutions, but on our system, we do not have their record. If he feels that he is validly admitted, he should not be the one fighting.

“The institution should be the one fighting for him, that this candidate is our candidate, our graduate, we admitted him. If he is the one fighting for the validity of his admission, there is something wrong somewhere.

“The university should be the one to be at the forefront. There is no way that you produce a graduate whose identity is being questioned, and then you keep quiet.

“Of course, the universities are the ones that admit; we are a regulatory body, we have records of all admissions, and all admissions must pass through our system.

“So, if the admission did not pass through our system, it means the university never even admitted him in the first instance.”

Benjamin added that the DSS may be investigating the student for alleged forgery.

“Those that were even arrested confessed, and then they fingered some people in some institutions who were the ones that actually, in connivance with them, led them to do whatever they did,” he added.

“So, if he had gone to the DSS, it could be that he was arrested for forgery, or something close to that. Because the institution has a major stakeholder in everything we are doing.

“So, I do not see any reason why, if there is a contestation, and the school cannot come on and say, ‘look, this candidate is our candidate, he was validly admitted through JAMB’.

“We cannot just wake up and say this student is an invalid student. Of course, we will tell you, the university will be in the know of whatever we are doing.

“Our investigation will carry that along. We have a very robust inclusive system of whatever we are doing."

I didn't read anywhere he mentioned his parents/ guardian or matured family members or even his Olori Ebi. They should appear in this kind of interview.

That is the strange part of his story for me.

Parents and relatives are always beside their wards during a period like this.

Re: FUTA Student Seeks Help As JAMB Flags Admission ‘seven Years After UTME’ by immortalcrown(m):
JAMB should punish or stress the university, not the graduate. It is the duty of the university to verify the admission before accepting the student. If the school failed to verify the guy's admission, JAMB should not scapegoat the guy.

Let me explain it. Is the certificate he got from the university fake? Even if the university claims that the certificate he got from the institution is fake, is there no evidence that the university was collecting school fees from him and conducting exams for him?

As long as the guy had a registration number in the school, the university should either explain how the guy got to the registration number or provide the real owner of the registration number.

The university has some questions to answer.

JAMB should settle this guy and fight the university. Otherwise, the university should give that graduate a lucrative job or give him an awesome compensation that will establish him for life.

JAMB..... always messing up..... always in the news for wrong reasons.
Re: FUTA Student Seeks Help As JAMB Flags Admission ‘seven Years After UTME’ by Kingdavid579(m):
Let’s be honest—JAMB is beginning to overdo it.

Yes, regulation is important, but when a body starts wielding power in a way that frustrates the future of young people, it becomes a problem.

Not every irregularity is fraud.

Sometimes, people genuinely go through a process they thought was right—especially when schools themselves are involved.

🎓 Many students were admitted through unconventional routes like part-time, distance learning, or fast-track programs.

Some didn’t even know they were supposed to go through JAMB regularization until years later.

Whose fault is that? The institution should take responsibility—not the student alone.

🧾 And now, someone graduates, gets a certificate, serves the country through NYSC, and suddenly JAMB says “you’re not valid”? How?

✅ What JAMB should be doing is working with schools to clean up the system—not waking up and declaring someone’s future invalid just because their name wasn’t in one database years ago.

✅ And any school that truly admitted a student should be the one defending that student, not leaving them to carry the burden alone.

This is how you break the spirit of hardworking Nigerians—people who already struggled to go to school without government help.

No scholarship, no subsidy, no support. Now after they finish, you tell them they’re not “genuine”?

Let’s not forget: power is not forever.
JAMB should focus on fixing the process, not punishing people retroactively.

Nigeria should be a place where people feel encouraged to get an education—not punished for it.

If it's a matter of NYSC, maybe he should moved on with his life and proceed for his post graduate studies abroad. FUTA has not denied his admission neither his certificate. In future this NYSC will soon lose its relevance. I really pity this boy. May Nigeria not happen to us

Reason why jamb shouldn't be conducting exam for university admission.

This guy now as a case study, LET SAY ITS TRUE THAT HE DIDN'T DO JAMB, YET HE STILL WENT TO ONE OF BEST UNIVERSITIES IN THE COUNTRY AND STILL PASSED AND BECOME GRADUATE.

With this, why can't each university be conducting its own admission process?
Re: FUTA Student Seeks Help As JAMB Flags Admission ‘seven Years After UTME’ by SmartPolician:
JAMB is beginning to lose its relevance and the government should consider scrapping it.

Isn't it rather funny that people spend 6 years in secondary schools, attend classes, pass exams and tests that will eventually mean nothing in the future?

In America, they ask for the transcript of your high school results before giving you admission.

In Nigeria, you attend all the classes, get punished for not attending them and eventually write WAEC, JAMB and post-UTME. That means all the first position you were struggling to get in school was useless because WAEC supersedes all that trash.

Who designed this education system?

It is obvious that you are one of the indomie generation so please go and read about what led this nation to have JAMB that most nations later copied.

The spokesman admitted that he is aware they deleted some fake lists sometimes ago. Why can't they look into the matter by bring up deleted lists and see if his name is there. If yes, what was his offense? Can the offense be re-evaluated?

Again, when the lists were deleted, was there notice to institutions that some admissions are fake and as a result, anyone among the list admitted in their schools be withdrawn?
Re: FUTA Student Seeks Help As JAMB Flags Admission ‘seven Years After UTME’ by LCling: 12:25pm On Jun 29, 2025
His admission is valid , - he has valid school registration number, exams and results and record, school fees , academic history.

Note; jamb is not only the route to admission by 2018,direct entry, pre-degree, etc allowed by university governors board were there. So award him certificate, jamb settle with University.

As for candidate initiate police&court , collect your your awarded degree, forget your NYSC for now go abroad do your masters or seek life.

Nigeria is a theatre of the absurd

This happened to a friend of mine around 2002/2003 section. He was already in year 3. Then, I was in year 1 even though we were classmates in secondary school.

When it happened to him, he nearly committed suicide because his parents were poor.

He later got another UTME form, did the exams, got admitted again to study the same course. For that reason, I graduated before him. Today, he is doing great.

You're jumping the whole issue , it's not about if he wrote exams from the school or paid school fees to the school , JAMB is basically saying the school didn't do their due diligence , the school is supposed to get back to JAMB to verify the admission letter the guy brought to them , verification wasn't done on the guys admission letter. All of these did he get registration number or did he pay school fees is immaterial if the admission letter wasn't verified from the outset , this isn't the first time such has happened and it won't be the last , the problem most times is from the student and the institution. I had friends who had similar problems when I was graduating from U.I , every single one of them lost their case

Abi oooo, Methuselah that not ready to change,.... for the 1st-100th universities in the world, if Nigerian who did WAEC/NECO wants to get admission, he enters without exam that is equivalent to jamb in their own country. Only in your own country, you do all sort of exams before getting admission, yet, you are still lagging behind, even among Africa universities.

When a Methuselah not ready change, status quo o. The society would suffer for it

How did the school get his name for post time of for admission was it not via Jamb, nor be Jamb dey send names of students that applied to a university names, did his name appear on admissions list,

The school and Jamb has to come in on this matter, this is really outrageous

However here's the case , it may be someone from JAMB who provided the fake document , it may also be that the school did verify his admission letter but he got someone from the inside to bypass this scrutiny but all I can say is the student himself should know about whatever went down , he can not wash his hands off the blame
