If your refusal wasn't within the last year (12 months from your current appointment) according to the instruction on the portal, I think you should be good. Then if not Chikzy, I think you should just speak to your school at this point, if deferrement would be an option.

I only saw dates for Jan, 2026 but my program starts this august, 2025. What should I do in this case?

Hi, I can’t find the view details option on my dashboard. It’s only showing reschedule appointment. How else do I expedite my appointment?

Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Timshin(f): 4:08pm On Jul 01, 2025
Click on total appointment. The first box on that page where you have 1 appointment. It will take you straight to view details. Click view details and you will see create emergency request. You can move from there. Check what I attached below for guidance.

Please everyone, I'll appreciate all valuable inputs to my case.

Applied for F-1 visa and had two 214b refusal in December 2024 - Abuja. I'm reapplying to same school for fall 2025, searching for date. I have full funding from a government office - my workplace.

First Attempt
What are you going to do in the US?: I explained the course and major I was going for, and my sponsors.

Why did you choose this school?: Prof. XYZ research aligns with my career goals, I contacted him and he has accepted that I join his research group.

How long have you worked?: Two years and nine months? I got the job through a referral from my undergrad professor who I worked with during my thesis

Are you married? No

Have you traveled outside Nigeria before? No

I would not be approving your visa at this time.

Side note: I have a mild hearing loss, so I asked V.O to repeat the question several times and she looked pissed off by that, I didn't think it through to explain that medical condition it on both interviews.

Second Interview:

Just one question and I got refused.

What has changed since your last application?: I have been able to bring documentation to support my funding, and before I could explain she cut me short, with "but I can see that already in your I-20". That was the end of the interview.

I still have the funding, but I'm very nervous about my next interview, I intended to apply to Abuja, what can I genuinely do to improve my chances, how best can I explain my story? What general advice do you have for me?

what school is that??

I am asking you this based on experience.

If you are extremely observant you can tell the reason they denied your first visa.

My first experience i was asked the question twice making me to understand the reason i was denied

Why did i chose this school?
twicehuh

after that day i went searching and found out the school i chose is marked

meaning i can’t get visa with such school.

Hello everyone. My interview waiver eligibility will expire by July 24. But I got a drop off date for August 10. Is it possible to change to in person appointment without losing the date? Since it is after my eligibility expires
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Greatkenny2: 6:12pm On Jul 01, 2025
hello guys. if you’re going for your second interview, is it cool to mention that you got a $1k scholarship? maybe when answering the “what has changed question” or do you totally avoid mentioning it because of how little it is
Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by Timshin(f): 7:04pm On Jul 01, 2025
I think during the first attempt when they asked what you were going to do in the US, you could have just told them your purpose. I'm going to the University of xxxx in the city of xxxxx for my Masters or PhD in xxxxxxx, with specializations in xxxxxxx. Note: this is the main reason for your travel. You didn't need to over explain. All they wanted to know was your purpose.

Secondly, why you chose the school. This is one very important question Vos are always highly interested in. So you must provide as much clarity as you can. Telling them a professor asked you to join their research group isn't enough clarity and it may sound suspicious to them. You need to identify a knowledge gap in your profession that you think would justify the reason you chose the school and the department, then tie it to your home. Something like ' I chose the University of xxxxx because the department of xxxxxx offers excellent research in xxxxxxx( identify that knowledge gap) which happens to be the core of my masters or phd research. Additionally, I believe learning from prof xxxxx( mention that prof) and other world class faculty members, as well as through leveraging the expertise and resources available in the department, I would be able to conduct more ground breaking research which will offer critical solutions to help improve xxxxx (mention that knowledge gap that has plagued your profession in your country), and upon the completion of my program, I would be coming back to Nigeria to introduce my findings as a xxxxxxx(mention the role) at xxxxxx(mention your company) where I will be leading strategic actions through xxxxxxx. Remember your strongest point as to come before your weakest points. Vos want to listen to something new not what people say everytime.

In your second Interview, what has changed? You could have answered that you were able to secure a scholarship from xxxxxxx which will cover (mention the percentage of the tuition it covers, as well as the percentage of the living expenses, health and dental insurance that it covers). Then you can go ahead to explain how you got it in your company or through your department. You can talk about showing your documentation after that. Remember you have to show as much clarity as you can. YOUR STRONGEST POINTS FIRST. I wish you all the best bro. You wont be the first and the last to go back to the embassy for an interview after many attempts. Prepare and pray. Go get it.

Hello Anon.

YOU
First Attempt
What are you going to do in the US?: I explained the course and major I was going for and my sponsors.

That is not the question the visa officer asked you. I am going to the U.S. for my Phd. degree in Havard University (simple).

YOU
Why did you choose this school?: Prof. XYZ research aligns with my career goals, I contacted him, and he has accepted that I joined his research group.

Your answer here is a very popular recite from pre-meditated applicants, and it's irrelevant. Every professor's research in any U.S. college in your chosen course of study must naturally align with your career as a novice undergraduate, and you are not in any position to judge any professor. Group of professors usually judge one professor , so who are you to know that some professor's research did not align with your career goals ?

YOU
How long have you worked?: Two years and nine months? I got the job through a referral from my undergrad professor, whom I worked with during my thesis

Why do you like stories ? Your answer was ; Two years and nine months. ** (The rest was the story to sugarcoat your pre-meditated answers).

YOU
Are you married? No

Have you traveled outside Nigeria before? No

Aside of your offline and pre-meditated styled of answers , you do not have any strong-tie to Nigeria. Even your present employment is not even up to 3 years.

YOU
Side note: I have a mild hearing loss, so I asked V.O to repeat the question several times and she looked pissed off by that, I didn't think it through to explain that medical condition it on both interviews.

This is not an excuse to exonerate your insufficient application. You can indicate your body challenge in your ds-160 and write it on a plain sheet of paper before your interview commences. You may also request to answer by writing it in a plain sheet in response to consular 's questions.

YOU
Second Interview:

Just one question and I got refused.

I still have the funding, but I'm very nervous about my next interview, I intended to apply to Abuja, what can I genuinely do to improve my chances, how best can I explain my story? What general advice do you have for me?

Your full funding from the federal or state government after working for just 1 year and a few months is questionable to the visa officer . It may be genuine, but given to you as a political slot or favoritism or indigenous offer. Lets even assume that you have a pass mark on this it will just be liken to you as having the whole of your school fees in your account, but you are still not qualified for the F1 visa because you cannot satisfy other requirements. So you went back the 2nd time with nothing changed in your profile.

NOTE : Regarding Kamsy101's answer. Where did he or she find out that the school he or she applied to is marked ? That is a fallacy. U.S. embassy cannot mark any SEVP certified school that have received the approval from the U.S. government to enroll F and M non-immigrant international students. No U.S. SEVP certified school can make you fail your visa interview. If you failed, you failed as a result of your human error or insufficient visa application. 🖐

That is not a scholarship. That is an entrance stipend to Cajole you as a prospective international student into believing that your host school is hospitable. Any scholarships that doesnt not start from 45% out of 100 is not a scholarship, its a gesture which eventually may not be accessible to you. 🖐

Kenny. Focus on all areas of F1 visa qualifications. If you had secured full scholarship your visa can be denied. You applied for $1,000 scholarship to hoodwinked the visa officer that your circumstances has changed ? If the amount was your initial deficit that's a different scenario. Besides, who told you that you needed $1,000 scholarship for a change of circumstances ?

Yes of course . Except if I don't understand your grammar. For example if your current appointment is January, 2026 and you were able to reachedule to September, 2025 that is backward reschedule. 👋
