DIVINEEVIDENCE:That's where you got it wrong An engineer is not a technician A civil engineer is not a Mason A civil engineer cannot as a result of his discipline know how to plaster a building but can supervise You can as well tell me which country engineers repair cars |

Arostar2023:The input of the professors should give birth to competently trained technicians, majorities of engineering professors here lack practical knowledge, you just don’t come to class dictate lecture note , Nigeria university should study German apprenticeship program for engineering courses We are doing well in medicine because the students were made to learn on the job during their clinicals , but reverse is the case for engineering students, that’s my point |

That's the basic difference between university and polytechnic education. An electrical/mechanical engineer in a polytechnic setting would easily fix this problem. |

FutureFocus:You have a point, but you are pointing in the wrong direction. Professors are not the problem, but the educational sector as a whole and the way it's structured. Professors and technicians are not same. Professors don't train technicians, not even in your beloved Germany. |

Engineering education takes 5years for first degree, but it does not prepare one to work as a generator mechanic. But learning how to fix a generator is through apprenticeship or practical training which for an average individual can be proficient in a few months. It is stupid to judge a professor's knowledge in his ability to fix a generator. Even apprentices can only focus on a specific area. for instance, a diesel engine mechanic may not fix a petrol engine. |

Zionmdde:Oga shut up How can you give an idea of what can fix something without knowing how to actually fix that thing? You and those professors and Nigerian politicians are the same thing. You know everything about making Nigeria work, but can't do anything practically. |

kentokay71:Mention any university in the whole world that has a course on how to troubleshoot And repair generators. Repair can be learned on the Field or via OEM certifications. |

Love800:A mechanic is one trained to handle tools for installation, repair and maintenance of particular equipment. A diesel mechanic will be totally clueless when it comes to fixing an helicopter fault unless he's specially trained to do so. Repairs are not taught in universities. Prove me wrong by giving a link of any university in the whole world where how to repair generators or engines are taught. |

Why are Nigerians so myopic, that the only thing we do in a discourse is to either side with the messenger or receiver without analyzing the message?. True even hierarchy technician won't stoop low to repair generator so why expect a professor to do so?. Now here are my own analysis. Do you believe those professors have ever designed an engine before?. Do you believe those professor's love there field and would further there research at slightest opportunity? Since engines are there specialty, did they together with a group of project students dismantle the engine and find out what could be recurring problem?. |

FutureFocus:The German apprentice program is same idea of technical vocational schools and polytechnics. Universities are for design research and analysis. |

TenQ:apt. Design is more complex and has to be done with advanced tools that are largely abstract in nature or output. Because of this complexity, engineering is always very vast and stretched. They also employ many hands to introduce more desirable features and thus compete in the market. There is the issue of economy of scales. You probably wont stress yourself to design a tv or radio reciever pcb only to end up printing one copy. It will be unfeasible for the market. |

This story brings to mind the common saying, "Nigerian youths are lazy" Should we now say "Nigerian Professor's are lazy" ![]() |

Love800:No mind the kurukere comment. Before you can call yourself a professor, you must understand the breakdown of every component and their functionality. Nigeria can never work with the current structure of professors in the offices an not professors on the field... |

Arostar2023:Who do they train? They are considered custodians of knowledge, how do coming generation and the society benefit from them? The US took out two professors for their practical contribution to nuclear energy development in Iran , because they know and are useful in their fields in the practical field How many Nigerians engineering professors has published engineering books used in other universities abroad unlike their colleagues in the medical fields that are doing well. This is because all they know is theory not practical, you can’t teach buy going to classroom to dictating notes alone , it’s not sufficient There is a Medical Prof in one of our university in Nigeria that buy foreign books, read, correct mistakes in those books and send the books back to the writers in advance countries, and he returns they do acknowledge and thank him, we’ll recognized , he was honored in the US years ago, we don’t have such in our engineering faculties, still the point I’m trying to make you understand |

hahahahahaha, Nigeria professors are only theoretical. |

Because like i tell all people.. Nigeria education system is hinged on textbooks and handouts and notes. With no practicality to word problems, even the smartest man becomes a dullard. It is easy to find X on the board than find X on the map during aerial or sea navigation. |

Siberia01:While the crop of Professors we have grew up in a dysfunctional education system like what we have in Nigeria, i believe explaining the word "Specialty" to you would be a waste of time. Give the Professor spanners, let him roll up his sleeves and fix the damn machine... Long live Prof. Sani, Agric Engineering, OAU. No time to explain incompetence demonstrated by a lot if university Professors... |
