Charity always begins at home, and Russia cannot afford to over-expand to the middle east, when it hasnt even finished the war with Ukraine.

Bear in mind that it has been a western strategy to recruit more cannon folders to fight Russia, and overtime, exhaust Russia to defeat. For example, there have been numerous attempt to open another war front with Georgia, Kazakhstan and even Moldova.

All the protest and political meddling in these countries are testament to that fact. This is also why the conflict with Ukraine is a war of attrition, where Russia is maintaining a minimal loss of its soldiers as possible, at the expense of quick success.

Furthermore, Putin's strategy has always been to conceal Russia's true strength, hence they are using drones from Iran for example. The only time when Russia will expose some of their most deadly weapons will be when the conflict involves Nato.

This can be seen with the oreshnik strike, which happened because the west used their long range weapon inside Russia. After that strike, long range weapons was not used anymore by the west.

So as you can see, it is evident that Russia is still fighting with their gloves on, and helping Iran will involve fighting bare fisted, meaning that it may get to a point where they have to assist Iran with weapons they haven't exposed yet.

No one wants the enemy to know their true capabilities, as such ambiguity is a strategic advantage in itself.

Putin will not enter a trap of engaging in multiple conflicts either near home or far away, only China with her huge population and economy can afford that.

When worse comes to worse, countries will always choose themselves, and alliance can only be relied upon when it doesnt threatens the existence or interest of the parties involved.

Iran is a conventional adversary, it has a defined and stated military apparatus, it has military structures like military bases, military air defense systems barracks etc which are legitimate military targets, Hamas is a terrorist group they don't have a definite territory, they hide and blend with civilians while attacking IDF forces, The war being fought in Gaza is not a conventional war but an insurgency or asymmetric style warfare.
