Kachalla Yellow Dan-Bokolo, the right-hand man and first cousin of the infamous bandit leader Bello Turji, was killed on June 29, 2025, as a result of critical injuries sustained during a confrontation with the volunteer force and the security agencies backed by credible intelligence in rural parts of Shinkafi in Zamfara state.

A 27-year-old bandit kingpin, Yellow Dan-Bokolo was married to four wives and fathered 12 children. He was regarded as the most notorious bandit in Shinkafi, arguably more deadly, ruthless, and cunning than even his cousin and mentor, Bello Turji.

What distinguished Dan-Bokolo from other bandit leaders was his lifelong addiction to hard drugs, particularly pentazocine (commonly referred to in the field as “pentameric injections”). His substance abuse fuelled extreme violence and desensitised him to suffering, often leading him to derive disturbing pleasure from attacks, killings, kidnappings, and gender-based and sexual violence.

Banditry Training

Dan-Bokolo received his training in the Dangulbi area of Maru Local Government Area (LGA) under the notorious warlord Shehu Rakep, a first-generation bandit in the north-west and Sahel region. Rakep was not only a fearless bandit but also a prolific arms runner. Fighters trained by Rakep were known for their fearlessness, tactical skills, and tenacity.

By contrast, Bello Turji was trained by the late Kachalla Halilu Sububu in the Sububu forest. While both men had separate ideological and tactical roots, Dan-Bokolo stood out for his hardline philosophy: he believed in vengeance and an uncompromising “eye for an eye” doctrine.

On April 25, 2022, when Turji attempted to initiate dialogue with the people of Shinkafi and ordered his fighters to submit their arms, Dan-Bokolo openly defied him. He rejected the peace initiative, declaring that they were not interested in dialogue. He was ultimately responsible for sabotaging the Shinkafi dialogue process between Turji’s camp, other bandits, and the local population.


Areas of operation


Dan-Bokolo operated from a base in Kagara, Shinkafi LGA of Sokoto State, with strongholds in Bafarawa, Kamarawa, Gebe, and Dan-Zage. He also controlled parts of western Shinkafi in Zamfara state. His camp comprised roughly 350 members, spanning both Sokoto and Zamfara States, and carried out numerous violent activities across these regions.

Banditry activities

Although Turji and Dan-Bokolo led separate camps, they collaborated frequently. Most of Turji’s attacks, including cattle rustling and abductions, were jointly executed with Dan-Bokolo. However, Dan-Bokolo was the more fearless and strategic operator of the two, often leading the fighting units of the group.



Notable atrocities linked to Dan-Bokolo include:

The burning of over 30 passengers in a Sabon Birni-bound bus in December 2021;
The sacking of Gangara village and the deposing of its village head in March 2022;
Repeated abductions, cattle rustling, and attacks on military outposts in Shinkafi, Isa, and Sabon Birni.


Conclusion

The killing of Kachalla Yellow Dan-Bokolo is a significant relief for residents of Zamfara and Sokoto states. More broadly, it represents a major victory for Nigeria’s security architecture in the fight against banditry. His death could demoralise Bello Turji, who has not only lost his most trusted lieutenant but also his cousin and closest confidant.

This development may push Turji to either capitulate under military pressure or flee to a more secure environment. However, if not eliminated during the ongoing military operations, he may eventually be forced to accept dialogue as a last resort.

In a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry in the North West, security forces have confirmed the elimination of Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo, a top commander in the notorious Turji-led terror network. Danbokolo succumbed to gunshot injuries on June 26, three days after he was fatally wounded in a daring joint operation carried out by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the HYBRID Forces in the Chida general area of Fakai District, Shinkafi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.


Danbokolo was believed to be the field commander responsible for orchestrating some of the deadliest attacks in the region. During the June 23 operation, he reportedly led an ambush against the advancing security operatives but was critically injured in the intense firefight that followed. He was shot multiple times in the abdomen and chest before being evacuated by his fighters to Kamarawa village in Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto State, where he eventually died.

Security sources confirmed his death through intercepted communications and reports from local informants, describing the development as a significant blow to the Turji terror network.

The operation, which reportedly caught the terrorists off guard, resulted in the deaths of at least 25 fighters and the destruction of multiple insurgent camps. Despite the success, the mission was not without losses. In a counter-attack led by Turji himself, over 100 fighters engaged the operatives, killing 13 — ten HYBRID Forces members and three private collaborators, including ex-militant leader Bashir Maniya and two of his lieutenants. Twenty-three others were injured.


Danbokolo’s death has sparked celebrations in several communities across Zamfara, Sokoto, and Katsina States.

“For over five years, Danbokolo ruled these forests like a warlord, collecting taxes from farmers and killing defaulters. We are finally breathing again,” said Alhaji Lawal Gatawa, a community elder in Gatawa village.


Another local source said: “This is more than just eliminating a bandit. Danbokolo was the spine of the Turji group’s operations. Turji rarely shows up for attacks — Danbokolo was the executor. When operations succeed, Turji takes credit in videos.”

Danbokolo’s deep knowledge of forest routes, local terrain, and logistics made him a strategic asset to the group, according to a senior intelligence officer. His elimination, analysts say, is likely to disrupt the network’s command structure and weaken its operational capacity in the near term.


“Removing Danbokolo from the battlefield is like pulling the engine out of a truck,” a Sokoto-based security expert noted.

While the DSS has yet to release an official statement, insiders within the security community have described the raid as a resounding success and a critical turning point in ongoing counterterrorism efforts in the region.
