I'll soon make out time to go the bank to disable mine. Nigerian banks are far behind in modern day banking services, all they care about is how to steal from their innocent customers in the guise of sms and useless charges.

Why would a sane human being disable sms alert because of #6 ? I don’t believe it really make any sense
If you run an active petty shop business and say you receive up to 50 transactions in a day.
50*6 days in a week*52 weeks in a year*6 naira= 93,600. Imagine if your yearly profit in that small shop is 1 million. That means nearly 10% of your profit covers sms fees.
That's not even taking into consideration that one transaction has 2 sms or more if it reverses.

I send an additional #50 naira when sending #10000 and above to someone.
If you are sending me 10k, I will ask you to send 9,999.
Losing 1naira instead of 50naira

This issue needs publicity and a cry in the social media. If you attempt to disable it, the banks ask you to sign a document saying the bank is free from any charges if fraudulent activities happened with your account. Like someone steals your money, they won't refund you. Nigerians need to cry out and make these banks reverse it. They are wicked. GTB is a champion in this rubbish. Same as Polaris Bank. And I'm sure this is how most of them operates. I think Fidelity is the only one so far I have noticed that isn't doing it.
Have they, the banks, done anything when monies where stolen for those who get SMS notifications? Sign that indemnity form and move on. I've disabled SMS notification on my account since I opened it in 2012

Switching to emails to receive transaction details will be charged also by email services such as Yahoo and Gmail as these major email services u will have to subscribe for premium services.
Already Yahoo charges users monthly to have premium services as to view email clearly unless u subscribe to their premium Yahoo Plus.
So if u r opting to use email, make sure is Gmail.
Yahoo plus? My hand no dey oo

"Then if the transfer is N10,000 or more, the receiving account is also charged N50 as electronic money transfer levy."

This is where most money is stolen by CBN and FGN.

Why not N50 on every N100,000?

N10k is just too small. They make trillions on this levy. It's wrong. I cannot disable SMS alert for N6 per message.
These same Nigerians that are complaining about the high Bank Charges are same that can be on Social Media Accounts for 6 to 7-hours,where more than thousands are deducted every hours!
We don't know what we really want as NIGERIANS!

Re: More Nigerians Disable SMS Alert Over Charges by Heavensake1: 3:41pm On Jul 06, 2025
Banks are robbing people through SMS charges. If it is #6 per SMS,how 88 sms in a month become #924? I calculated it,I was charged 10.5 on each sms. I had to stop the sms charges.

WhatsApp is the best. Businesses should adopt WhatsApp messaging over the traditional SMS
Using WhatsApp for official and business stuffs ain't cool.

Email is better.

The unfortunate thing is that the sms will not even deliver immediately. At times, sms notifications are received hours or days after transaction due to network glitches from these same fraudulent networks. I will unsubscribe if I have my way.

Sign the indemnity form? Perhaps you have some thousands in your account. Sorry...no serious business minded person will sign it. Yeah. Since day 1 around 2010, I disabled it too. But last year, they claimed Cardoso made it compulsory that sms must be activated or you.sign that thing which I can't. You don't value your money is why you are talking like that. And sure, banks are still liable to refund any stolen money. You cant take them to court or do anything if you sign it. I can't. Sorry.

The charges from GTBank have been unacceptable, so I've decided to move on from my account. As of now, I'm having over -2k+ in my account now.

Leave them. Many of them don't know the importance of prompt alert services. I can confidently say that most of them don't open their email inbox every day, yet they prefer email alert. cheesy

Imagine something tearful taking place in your account, and you are not promptly alerted because you disabled sms service over N6. grin Body go tell them last last. cheesy

Nigerians just like free things. If banks send you sms to keep you updated regarding your account, should banks also bear the costs? Na yeye dey worry some people. I will never opt out of sms alert. Never! It has saved many from being plundered financially by scammers. sad

Re: More Nigerians Disable SMS Alert Over Charges by Tohsynetita1(m): 4:51pm On Jul 06, 2025
The only solution I think is to leave conventional banks and move to fintech.
Or you don’t send more than required amount.
If they don’t want to disable your sms, then you tell them you want to close your account.
If they don’t allow you, close it on app and open another bank without sms.

then abandon the bank and move to another that allows u deactivate only SMS alert. If many of their customers does the same they will adjust quick quick
