Damion Ogeare, 43, of Trowbridge, Wiltshire, was caught on camera entering the pony's stable before carrying out a disgusting act on the defenceless animal, leaving the owner heartbroken

A man who avoided jail for "raping" a Shetland pony was "lonely" a court heard. Damion Ogeare, 43 admitted the disgusting act after his DNA was discovered inside the pony during a vet assessment.

CCTV footage caught Ogeare entering Cassieopia's stable around 6.30pm on January 24 last year, with the pony being restrained using a dog lead. Prosecutor Tom Wright revealed in Winchester Crown Court that Ogeare spent about 10 minutes in the stable before emerging half-naked.

The court heard how a dog lead was found discarded at the scene, which was used to restrain the animal. Concerns were raised among locals after the incident, with one man reporting finding a dog lead on a cow.
Cassieopia's owner, Christine Woolley, blasted Ogeare as a "horrible man" and stated that her ponies are her "whole life", and his actions have "ruined my trust in society".

Mrs Woolley expressed her outrage and frustration saying, "To have one assaulted in such a degrading manner has completely ruined my trust in society."
Holly Fagan, defending, told the court that trying to make sense of the crime was futile, noting that the defendant was "going through a period of acute loneliness and isolation" at the time of the offence.

"He's expressed a great deal of remorse" she continued, revealing that Ogeare wishes "express his deepest apologies" to Mrs Woolley. Ms Fagan highlighted that her client is on benefits, has been off work for a considerable period, and a hip replacement has further "contributed to his poor mental wellbeing".

Recorder Gordon Bebb, presiding over the case, began his sentencing remarks with a clear message: "Judges in court are used to most things but sometimes certain crimes stop even a hardened judge in their tracks, and this is one of those offences."

He added, "I know that any right thinking member of the public would be completely disgusted by what you did."

For the charge of sexual penetration of a living animal, he handed down an 18-month community order to Ogeare, which includes 30 days of rehabilitation activities with the probation service. Additionally, an indefinite restraining order was set in place, barring him from contacting Mrs Woolley or visiting Whaddon Lane, as well as the surrounding stables and fields.

The defendant avoided being listed as a sex offender – a requirement that only applies if an individual receives a custodial sentence for such an offence.

Recorder Bebb also instructed Ogeare to reimburse Mrs Woolley £299.50 for her vet bills and the expense of a new CCTV camera she bought for extra security
