nairalanda1:Your analysis is on point. I was a boy when Gowon was overthrown by Murtala Mohammed. I have experienced both the military and democracy era in Nigeria. In my overall judgment, the military performance much better than this our democracy since 1999. Come to Abuja, many of the iconic infrastructure were built by the military, Aso Rock Villa, NNPC towers, Abuja Central Area, National Mosque and National Christian Center, Old CBN building, Force Headquarters, Defense, Headquarters, National War College, International Conference Center ( recently Renovated by Wike), National Medical Center Gwagwalada, the list goes on. Warri refinery, Port Harcourt refinery, Kaduna refinery. All major Port's in the Country. The list goes on. Insecurity was not tolerated. Let me not talk about the naira to dollar rate, because that is a huge failure on our economy. After 26 years of democracy, Nigeria democracy is still struggling to break the outstanding record's of the military. |

As at the said year (1989), those prices were already considered to be expensive; and IBB's Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) was already sapping Nigerians big time. As at that time, a tin of Peak milk was N2:00 but 10 years before that time (that is 1979), N2:00 could get you a carton on Peak milk |

All these are too expensive. In my secondary school days(in form two), in the early 80s, a bag of rice was N70, a cartoon of milk was N26, a bag of salt was N12 and a cartoon of veg oil was N39. It was when IBB introduced SAP(structural adjustment programme) that price of commodities started going up, from 1985. There was a country indeed. |
