Lookman: Atletico Madrid, Barcelona & Napoli Fight For Nigerian Star - Who Wins? by Great100000(op): 4:16pm On Jul 09, 2025
Atletico Madrid Joins Race to Sign Super Eagles Star Amid Barcelona, Napoli Interest.

• Atletico Madrid have opened talks with Atalanta for Ademola  Lookman as they hope to seal a deal this summer

• Barcelona and Napoli remain strong contenders for the Super agles star, while Arsenal monitor the situation from afar

• Atalanta values the CAF Player of the Year at €40‑50 million, yet Atletico’s budget may hinge on buying Cristian Romero

Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid rarely waste time once a target is identified, and their admiration of Ademola Lookman is no different.

The Rojiblancos have begun negotiations for Lookman, whose stock has soared since he arrived in Bergamo three seasons ago.

According to Transfermarkt, the 2024 CAF Player of the Year struck 20 goals across all competitions last season and famously recorded a hat‑trick in the Europa League final, propelling Atalanta to their first major European trophy the previous season.

Atletico coach Simoene believes Lookman could fit straight into either flank of his 3‑5‑2 formation as he plans to challenge Barcelona and Real Madrid for major honours.

Crucially, Lookman is under contract until 2027, granting Atalanta the leverage to demand a sizable fee, but Atletico’s smooth working relationship may shave vital euros off any final agreement.

Barcelona and Napoli still in contention

Competition, however, is fierce for Lookman.

Barcelona, fresh from the disappointment of losing Nico Williams to Athletic Bilbao’s renewal, have revived internal discussions around Lookman’s name.

Meanwhile, newly crowned Serie A champions Napoli view the Super Eagles forward as the ideal successor to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after his departure to Paris Saint-Germain.

Such interest is hardly surprising as Lookman averaged a direct goal contribution every 117 minutes in Italy last term, eclipsing most wingers in Europe’s top five leagues.

Napoli can offer Champions League football and relative tactical continuity, while Barcelona can promise a global spotlight.

Budget could decide Lookman’s destination

Atalanta has reportedly set a €40‑50 million valuation for Lookman, but Atletico’s transfer purse is not limitless, Mundo Deportivo reports.

Club CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin has earmarked the bulk of the summer budget for Tottenham centre‑back Cristian Romero, another €60 million‑plus move.

If Spurs refuse to budge, Atletico may redirect funds fully toward Lookman, yet they remain determined not to be drawn into a bidding war.

Barcelona’s well‑documented Financial Fair Play restraints complicate any outright cash offer, potentially forcing a structured deal with players in exchange.

On the other hand, Napoli’s finances are buoyant after their Scudetto win, but president Aurelio De Laurentiis is notoriously shrewd and may wait for Atalanta to soften their stance late in August.

Arsenal, watching developments from North London, would prefer Real Madrid’s Rodrygo should he become available, making their Lookman interest more contingent than concrete.

Napoli urged to stay clear of Lookman

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Lookman is expected to leave Atalanta this summer, and an Italian football expert has warned one of the interested clubs to desist from signing the Super Eagles star.

Italian football expert Marcelo Altamura has warned Napoli against signing the reigning African Footballer of the Year and should instead look at other options.

My thoughts too. Athletico Madrid is the best. Barca will just be putting him on bench to accommodate every star they have..

You know you can write a lot of words that have more than 40 characters.

It's very easy. Just involves thinking on your feet.

Better stop them jokes. It sounds funny, but it also gets stale after some time

But if you want to continue, na your business. Sleep well

Honestly, Barcelona would have been a great fit but we all know they are financially strapped.

They can't register all their players, and they are still owing long gone former players salaries.

Napoli would be jumping from one Italian frying pan to another Italian inferno... He should just avoid Italian clubs totally.

Atletico will be fair enough... At least, he is more guaranteed serious playing time.

Playing him alongside Alvarez would be a very deadly attacking system.

Napoli get mind sha, you are currently mistreating Osimhen and you are making moves for Lookman.
They are smoking high grade weed in naples

Barca may just be his best bet, he has a good chance of winning trophy, and if it doesnt work out pretty well in Barca, he can still downgrade to a club that is relatively lower than Barca in standard and still be guaranteed high-quality football, UCL top league and all.

If it works out too for him at Barca, after few years Saudi will love to have him, since they like poaching people that have played for top clubs in top leagues

Even though I don't like Napoli because of the Osimhen treatment. (but Osimhen is also to blame by signing that stupid contract)

Napoli is the best place for him, he will play regularly there.

@ Barca...don't think he will play regularly.

Atletico Madrid is not just a good fit for him.

What is this one saying? How did he fight with his coach? Someone that registered a goal and/or an assist in every match he played before injury. When he came back from injury, he scored within minutes of getting substituted. Because he lost a penalty, the coach had to go and blast him at a press conference that he's the worst penalty taker and his penalty cost them a slot at the next round, not the defensuve setup that opened their eyes and allowed the team to concede 6 aggregate goals. Even before he released his statement, a lot of players and pundits have criticized the coach for saying such nonsense. African players from Africa must work twice as hard to prove their worth and any small slip is over exaggerated, they can't try half the things their European counterparts get away with.

It could be concorted but I hope the who sabi lookman is not the usual Nigerian tribalistic stupidity camouflaged as sentiment.

Performance wise, Lookman is not in the category of :
Dalap, yet your likes will worship him.
Nkuku, yet he is a star in your dream.
Mason Mount
Garnacho
Richarlison

I can't name enough.

Lookman turns up occasionally for Nigeria but he needs to learn how to stop playing hero ball. Dude can be selfish to the detriment of the team. May Nigeria National team keep winning and unifying the country
