https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MelonThe Edos’s, also known as the Benin people, who currently reside in Benin City, can be traced to the foundation of the popular Nigerian cuisine called egusi soup. The melon plant, specifically Cucumis melo, is believed to have originated in Central Asia, with its cultivation spreading to other parts of the world. While some sources suggest an African origin, the current consensus leans towards Southwest Asia. The melon's journey includes early cultivation in Iran, India, and other parts of Central Asia before spreading to Europe and eventually the Americas, while its origin is found to be from the Asia region Europeans traded it from Asia to Europe and Africa ,it got to the edo people of Nigeria as a gift from the Portuguese traders to the Oba of Benin same goes for cotton seeds both of this crops were eventually converted for food, the melon was used to make eguisi soup and cotton wool was used to make the cotton soup called ikpowu which has gone extinct in the edo dishes,But the egusi soup has managed to stay and accepted across Nigeria tribes this is due to its usage in the religious courts and festive rites of the edo people in the once benin empire the word eguisi was corrupted from its original word ogi -isi , melon which stands for ogi in the edo language and isi in edo language which stands for afar or foreign this is to further emphasize the crop melon was foreign, regardless of these very fact there is another aspect to this evidence we cannot ignore that is deep rooted in edo language the words called ikpowu(cotton soup) and ikopogi(melon soup) this are alternative names this food also goes by in the edo language and it holds a key evidence to its origin the words called ikpo stands for ikpototoki which translates to Portuguese in edo language
