is a Common Kestrel. a relatively common bird of prey.

please release it
dayveed1:
As I walked outside the door after a heavy down pour this morning. I saw this strange bird seeking shelter on the Clothsline in my balcony. I would have ignored her on a good day but she was looking at me and following me with her big yellow eyes. Her curiosity caught my attention so I snuck to her blind spot and kidnapped her. She put up a little fight and tried to bite me twice. I did a little research to satisfy my own curiosity. Google said it's some type of Falcon "Kestrel"

I'd probably end up releasing it. I don't think she can be domesticated.

Has anyone encountered or seen this type of bird before?

I have been seeing this bird around a lot and it seems they are finding something to eat around ahouses nowadays. Some of them when I see them are too weak to fly and one even sat near our window for hours.

Oh dear… that’s a rare species of bird from the depths of the Amazon rainforest. It's known for its ability to turn invisible when threatened and can only be seen by people who are color blind. Handle it carefully, as it's usually considered a bad omen when close encounters with humans such as this happens. And if you read this up till this point I want you to know that I have no freaking idea WTH I’m talking about cheesy

To all over-sabi advisers, his question is "what type of bird is it?" He didn't ask for opinions about what to do with it.
In his wisdom, he knows what to do with it. Same people that destroy the environment with all manner of irresponsible practices will come and be forming sustainability champions here

Lizards are their Primary Prey and Rats too, so if you have them in and around your hood, this Falcons will surely come calling.

This is a Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) is a magnificent bird of prey known for its incredible speed and agility.
But they’re same family with kestrel, falconidae and genus, falco.

Here are some fascinating facts about them
- *Speed*: Peregrine Falcons are the fastest animals on record, reaching speeds of up to 389 km/h (242 mph) during their characteristic hunting dive, known as a stoop.

- *Hunting*: They primarily feed on medium-sized birds, such as pigeons, doves, and songbirds, which they catch in mid-air.

- *Habitat*: Peregrine Falcons can be found on every continent except Antarctica, and they inhabit a wide range of environments, from urban cities to remote wilderness areas.

- *Nesting*: They typically nest on cliff ledges, building nests called eyries, but they also adapt to urban environments and nest on tall buildings and bridges.

- *Conservation*: Peregrine Falcons have faced threats from habitat loss, pollution, and hunting, but conservation efforts have helped recover their populations in many areas.

These birds are truly remarkable creatures, and their speed, agility, and hunting prowess make them a thrill to watch.

Peregrine falcons can be domesticated. A lot of falconers in Arab countries and UK use them as they are considered to have the fastest diving speed, but I think the bird you have is far too old to be trained.

Please release this bird as it's important for vermin control

Abeg. No be only peregrine. grin
It's a kestrel.

You have to love these raptors. Look at how long the tail feathers are. It's also quite streamlined making it look sharp and precise.

Re: What Type Of Bird Is This? by kay29000(m): 4:12pm On Jul 10, 2025
Yep, this is the bird that's always scaring my chickens. I've never seen it kill any of the chicks before, but whenever it's around (on the roof or on the fence), they all run away and start making loud noises. I have seen it kill a lizard before though. It came down on the lizard, pinned it down, killed it with its beak before flying off with it.
