As I walked outside the door after a heavy down pour this morning. I saw this strange bird seeking shelter on the Clothsline in my balcony. I would have ignored her on a good day but she was looking at me and following me with her big yellow eyes. Her curiosity caught my attention so I snuck to her blind spot and kidnapped her. She put up a little fight and tried to bite me twice. I did a little research to satisfy my own curiosity. Google said it's some type of Falcon "Kestrel"

I'd probably end up releasing it. I don't think she can be domesticated.

Has anyone encountered or seen this type of bird before?
This is Kestrel. It is a type of Falcon similar to Peregrine.
Re: What Type Of Bird Is This? by Paut(m): 4:29pm On Jul 10, 2025
This is never a problem compared to what people are you through.

It was looking for help at the same time you fought it before kidnapping it, so how is this really a problem in someone's life, they're bigger problems more than this c'mon

How did you train it to fly away and still come back? And what part of Nigeria are you based in?
asaba in delta. We lived together right from when it was small. I took it from my customer. Fed it well. I kept it inside the house. ...in a big carton house. I made a door for it to come outside anytime it wanted.

I thought as much. Because even though she's still young. She is very huge for her age and her claws are very long. I would have Loved to cater for her but she's trying to attack me at every opportunity she gets.

UPDATE : I released it after many failed attempts to feed it. She flew away gracefully. It was a precious experience to share with my kids.
That's a falcon and it's a bird of prey U can't take care of or feed. They hunt down their foods. Thank U for letting her fly to her freedom instead of putting her in a prison to die painfully

It's actually a Common Kestrel. Peregrine falcons are not native to Africa, although they travel to and through. If anything, it looks more like a lanner falcon than a peregrine falcon but regardless, they all belong to the falcon family including the common Kestrel which this bird certainly is.

While young, I have tried to catch this bird several times but it is very much impossible because it's usually very much aware and alert of its surroundings. Before you move an inch close to it, it's gone.

Yes it's a Peregrine falcon but a young one most likely within it's first year that's why it has the brownish colour. When it becomes an adult it becomes slate blue/ grey on the back.

Lol that's the fastest animal on earth. I still wonder how the OP catch am sef... On a second look it might not be a Peregrine falcon which is supposedly the fastest animal on earth but a kestrel falcon. Young Peregrines look like kestrels too I didn't get a good look at the underbelly side to check something

Please release it asap. Feed it with meat and give it water. If it wants to stay, it will stay. Your pictures are so gorgeous. Which phone is that?

Pray because she is seeing falcons lately?lmao this una religious mentality ehn don't you think it's because humans are encroaching on their habitats lately and their ecosystem us being destroyed?
Re: What Type Of Bird Is This? by micky2004: 5:55pm On Jul 10, 2025
This is Peregrine Falcon and it's the Fastest Creature in the World and it can only be found in Africa and some Parts of Asia.

It's a Predator Bird preying and eating Lizards, Insects (Even including Scorpion) and Snakes.

Maybe it saw a lizard or Scorpion or even Snake in your Compound that it's trying to get and got trapped.(it's very harmless to human beings)

It's good that you free the innocent bird as it can't be domesticated (just like Eagles) otherwise it will die of Starvation because they can't be fed by human beings only preferring to hunt on their own.

Okay. Can you remember what you were feeding it? I know it is carnivorous.

I think is the lesser kestrel. It is characteristic of the falcon family, but definitely not a peregrine

That is a kestrel, a type of falcon.

It is not even as fast as a cheetah.

The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal on the planet.

It is a kestrel, not a peregrine.

Both the kestrel and peregrine are falcons, but the peregrine is bigger and faster and is, in fact, the fastest animal on earth.

The kestrel, like every falcon, is fast, but it is not even as fast as the cheetah.

The Peregrine is a moving bullet in the air. It's a thing of beauty to see when it's on a hunt! The way it dives after the prey and snatches in mid flight.
