How many tenants in Nigeria cleared the NEPA bills before parking out?


I put it to you that millions of tenants transfer these liabilities unto the landlord and incoming tenants.

I called the landlord many times to divide the outstanding bill so I could pay my share before packing out.

It took almost a month for him to do it. I almost gave up. But I eventually did it for the sake of my conscience.

I left 32 units in my prepaid meter when packing out. Though only because there's no how I wil take it

Most don't even pay or don't want to pay while still living in the rented units.
My tenant even bypassed the meter to avoid paying anything. But they want constant light like in the western world.

Na mumu dey clear NEPA bill. NEPA punishes any one that pay their bills faithfully.

Nigerians and not paying of NEPA bills are like 5&6

But then again,here in the compound I reside, everyone pays his/her light bills at the end of every month.

Electricity is one of those basic amenities I don't joke with, cus I can't stand the sight of my neighbors having electricity while I sleep in darkness. In my former house, I bought about 5k card of which I didn't exhaust all till I parked.
Before I move in to a new place now, I always observe the meter to know how much token or debt is left back by the previous occupant, if it's something little I can pay I will do that. But if it's a huge deposit, the landlord will have to deduct the money from the rent am about to pay him ( that's what I did in the present apartment I'm occupying)

Who would pay crazy and estimated bill 100% before packing out?, nobody!!!

Prepaid meter is the best way ,our wife (my brothers wife) neighbour at the market is complaining that she parked into a new house and was told that the former tenant was owing up to 100k electricity bill and if she want the light to be reconnected she should pay it ....the woman is yet to pay it and don't have light almost one month now....but with prepaid meter ,it can't happen ,is just pay as u use

It is the duty of a landlord to ensure that electricity bills are paid regularly by tenants, most discos have a platform that allows owners of the property see outstanding bills and get notifications for payments.

Tenancy agreements contain this obligation, problem is that most landlords become complacent overtime focusing only on rent collection, some landlords don't even pay their utility bills preferring to bypass or push it to tenants, (common with live in landlords) over time these bills are carried over to new tenants.

You don't expect a tenant who moved into an apartment in 2024 to pay for bills accumulated by tenants who left in 2023.
When such happens the landlord is supposed to wipe out the bills providing a clean slate for the new tenants.

Our landlords are only interested in rent, these days prospective tenants copy meter numbers to check the balances on the bill to decide whether to rent or not.

Discos also contribute to this problem when you ask them for a statement , they fraudulently tell you that you re not the landlord but want you to clear the bill.

In summary if there are accumulated bills in an apartment , its clearly the landlord fault. If there is bypass on a prepaid meter its the landlords fault.

Install your meters on the pole or restrict access to the meters, only allow customers access the customer interface unit.

No rational tenant will pay over 400k for rent and go and pay another 400k to bills they never consumed.

Being a landlord comes with privileges and obligations stop skipping the latter.

I remember how my father cleared the outstanding bill of one outgoing tenant with a promise that he will pay back. The tenant never paid back.

If the first tenant of any apartment paid all bills, incoming tenants won't inherit any outstanding arrears.

The post is meant to show the attitude of tenants who are quick to label landlords as greedy when 99.9% of tenants don't clear the power bills before leaving.

This question should not arise if every energy consumer is metered, estimated bill is big fraud that must be abolished in Nigeria because it exposes the consumer and the supplier or the distributor to fraud.

Seconded. However, contact periodic meter integrity check to mitigate bypass by indiscipline tenant.

A lot of landlords will make sure you have settled everybill before you move out. However, if you are were a troublesome tenant even me i wont bother about you paying your bills or not, just comot from my house asap.

I did. I paid up all bills before moving.
