The Light in the Dark Room

---
The night in Lagos was noisy as usual—generators humming, hawkers shouting, danfo buses honking—but inside Nonso’s apartment, it was silent. Too silent.
He lay on his back in bed, eyes wide open, battling the shame that seemed to crawl on his skin.

He had just fallen again.
Again.

His fingers still tingled from what he had done with his phone.
His conscience screamed.
His heart ached.

He turned to the wall and whispered, “God, why? Why can’t I stop this thing?”

Nonso had given his life to Christ two years earlier, during a crusade held in Surulere. He was the first in his family to truly pursue God. He joined the ushering department, even led prayers in youth meetings. On the outside, he looked like a model believer.

But deep inside, he was bound.

Ever since he stumbled upon pornography during secondary school through a friend’s memory card, it had become a silent chain around his life. What began as innocent curiosity turned into a late-night habit. Masturbation followed. Now, even after being born again, the temptation still returned—especially at night, especially when he was alone.

He had fasted. He had cried. He had even smashed an old phone once in anger.
Yet the struggle persisted.

That night, he scrolled mindlessly on Instagram until a short video caught his attention. It was a preacher’s voice:

“Your body is not a playground for lust. It is the temple of the Holy Ghost. Let the Word of God dwell richly in you, and you will overcome.”

Nonso froze.
That verse sounded familiar. He opened his Bible app and found it—1 John 2:14:

“…because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.”

He read it again.

“You are strong... the Word abides in you… overcome the wicked one.”

Suddenly, it dawned on him.
He had been trying to fight the darkness without light.
He had tried emotions, fear, guilt—but never the daily discipline of letting God’s Word abide in him.

He whispered a new kind of prayer:
“Jesus, I’ve tried to stop on my own, but I need You. Let Your Word live in me. I surrender this struggle to You.”

From that day forward, Nonso changed his strategy.

He began each morning not with WhatsApp or news updates—but with the Bible.
He joined an online accountability group for young Christian men struggling with purity.
He filled his nights with worship instead of silence. He stopped feeding the flesh and began feeding his spirit

Some days were still hard. But something had shifted—his desire was changing.
The Word was working.

Weeks turned into months.

Then one evening, during a men’s fellowship gathering, the coordinator unexpectedly asked, “Who here has a testimony of deliverance?”

Nonso stood up slowly.

“My name is Nonso. I used to live a double life—holy on Sunday, bound in secret the rest of the week. But Jesus set me free. Not through fear or punishment—but through the power of His Word. I now live in the light, and the darkness has lost its grip.”

There was a holy silence in the room. Some men had tears in their eyes.

After the meeting, three young men approached him quietly. “Please,” one said, “can we talk? I’ve been fighting the same battle.”

And just like that, Nonso became a light for others—because he allowed the Word to live in him.

---
*Reflections:*

Addiction thrives in darkness, but the Word of God brings light. When you allow the Word to *abide* in you—not just visit—you gain power over every sinful habit. You are not alone. In Christ, you are strong, and you *have* overcome the wicked one.

*Purityland Confessions*:
I'm graced to live above the lust of the flesh and the eyes, in the Name of Jesus.
It's okay, you will outgrown it soonest.

It's just a phase

The first step to freedom from every bondage is to acknowledge that you are in bondage and the second step is to be ready to be free.Next is to take conscious and serious steps to be free.An habit is not formed in a day it started one day so also you have to redirect or rechannel your passion towards worthy and profitable venture and link with the Higher Power(God) for your total freedom.

The only way to break free from the power of any kind of sin is allowing Jesus Christ to create in you a clean heart.
Your mind must be renewed to remove all the sinful junks piling up over the years.

Every Sunday, without fail, on this forum, people talk about masturbation. Is there a masturbation pandemic in Nigeria or am I missing something?

You will inevitably face death one day. Concentrate on the positive aspects of life and make the most of your time. No one is perfect, so let go of viewing yourself what everyone is (Sinners).

Anyone straggling with pornography and masturbation and truly desires to break free from it should make the word of God (Bible) their constant companion.

Yes, you may fall back in to those lustful temptations at the latter stages but believe me, if you won't remain there (wallowing in self-pity & self-condemnation) & abide in/and with the word, you'll find yourself gradually losing those desires/becoming less interested in them and before you know it, you've gone days, weeks, months & then years that you haven't watched porn or self-pleasure yourself.

Also, ensure that after you're free from those unhealthy addictions, you deliberately avoid materials (videos, photos, music etc) that stimulate lust. Do well to also find a Pastor that knows the word of God (in my case, I sat under & listened to ministrations by Apostle David Azeez) and sit under their ministration week in, week out (in Church or by listening to their messages).

Jesus did it for me (decades of pornography & self-pleasuring gone) and I've been free ever since.

Thank you, Jesus!

I believe there is. My rough estimate is 1 in every 1,000 male is addicted to either porn or masturbation or both (they usually go hand-in-hand).
It's not so evident, ofcourse, because those who engage it, do it in secret.

They jerk-off over there? I thought they were every woman's dream and can go and get any woman they want since they are not greedy with money. With such capabilities why would something like that be a pandemic in their country shocked grin grin

Masturbation is neither good nor bad.

It's good when used temporarily to relieve sexual tension or to get a sample of one's spermatozoa for medical test, but bad when it becomes a permanent alternative to having regular sex.

It's the guilt attached to it in religion that causes religious people to see it as evil.

However, in my opinion, religion or no religion it's not good to be addicted to it especially as a young person.

And Nigeria's a very religious country, I guess that's why you guys need to offload that guilt every Sunday.. It's tricky, religious dogma says it's wrong, and the bible says sex before marriage is also wrong.. and not everybody wanna get married or some people find it hard to find women.. So what happens in that scenario? 🤷‍♂️

No matter how anybody wants to view it, its still far better than having sexual activities outside marriage. As long as one is mature and didn't have the resources to settle down for marriage, the only way to maintain the self dignity and relief one's self of the urge is to decently embark on masturbation.

Argue with your keyboard.
yes, I masturbate and I feel no remorse about it. There is nothing wrong with masturbating. I dated girls in the past who also masturbated prior to our relationship. Stop associating everything with religion. Infact I masturbated today. There is nothing wrong with masturbating, it's healthy. I'm a medical biochemist.
