Why Graduates Are Leaving Lagos For Smaller Cities by lagostrendboy(op): 3:50am On Jul 14, 2025
Once the undisputed magnet for ambitious young Nigerians, Lagos now faces stiff competition from rapidly developing regional centres. Thanks to remote‑work options, government‑backed infrastructure projects and fresh private investment, graduates have viable—and often more comfortable—alternatives closer to home. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

Below are seven key reasons driving this migration—and the benefits early movers are already enjoying.

1  Lower Cost of Living
A one‑bedroom apartment in Ibadan or Enugu typically costs ₦50,000–₦80,000 per month versus ₦200,000+ in Lagos, while food, transport and utilities follow the same pattern. That 81 % cost gap leaves far more money for savings or leisure.

2  Shorter, Saner Commutes
Lagosians lose an average of four hours to traffic each day, with some commuters clocking 70‑plus minutes one‑way. In most smaller cities, the daily trip rarely exceeds 30 minutes, giving graduates back two–three productive hours.

3  Expanding Local Job Markets
Industrial parks and special economic zones in places like Sagamu (Ogun State) promise tens of thousands of new roles in manufacturing, logistics and tech by 2026, and they are already hiring fresh talent with relocation incentives.

4  Remote‑Work Flexibility
Nationwide fibre roll‑outs and the NCC’s National Broadband Alliance aim for 70 % internet penetration in 2025, making it easy to log into Lagos‑based—or global—teams from anywhere with stable power.

5  Affordable Housing Ownership
Land on the outskirts of cities such as Abeokuta or Uyo remains within reach for early‑career professionals, enabling faster paths to home ownership than in Lagos’ overheated market. (Plots start at ~₦600k, versus several million in Lekki II).

6  Cleaner Environment & Better Well‑Being
Lower population density means less air pollution, quieter streets and friendlier neighbourhoods—factors repeatedly linked to reduced stress and higher life satisfaction among returnees

7  Supportive Start‑up Ecosystems
States such as Enugu are branding themselves “Africa’s next Silicon Valley,” rolling out tech‑city projects, tax holidays and seed‑fund programmes that actively court young founders otherwise priced out of Lagos Yaba.

Life‑Style Trade‑Offs: Car vs Danfo, City vs Megacity

Relocating won’t remove everyday hassles—owning a car strains wallets anywhere, while public buses (danfo) can still test patience and hygiene. But the aggregate stress score tilts lower outside Lagos: cheaper fuel, easier parking and lighter traffic all cushion the blow. Ultimately, graduates balance career reach with well‑being, and regional hubs in 2025 finally let them have both.

I don't like overpopulated cities like Kano and Lagos, I prefer smaller cities for sanity sake.

I wish it was true, this congestion is too much lagos needs to breath. I hope the people coming with polythene bags in their hands day and night and those loaded with malu in lorries will stop so that sanity will return to this beautiful city

Big praise to Tinubu and late Buhari for bringing peace to places like the southeast by the extradition of Nnamdi Kanu and other terrorists, now many graduates feel safe to move back home and enjoy a better life outside the stress of Lagos.

Cost of living in Lagos fit Kee person. House, food, transportation would wipe away any savings

Lagos is truly full of opportunities, but to be honest I don't miss it. Living in Lagos for a period of 5 years will reduce your lifespan by almost 2 decades due to the noise, stress, traffic, pollution etc. But it's the centre of excellence for a reason with so many good too.

But I prefer sanity for now abeg.🤷🏿‍♂️

A young graduate with no backings/financial support will do better staying in a suburban area.

Many people in Nigeria especially in SouthWest think that life begins and ends in Lagos. They're also think that most Easterners have all migrated to Lagos leaving Igboland empty and deserted. It's quite unfortunate.

I think young graduates eagerness to get job may push them to any city that presents the opportunity. This does not peculiar to only Lagos State's young residents.

Those that came with polythene bags and malu in lorries turn to landlord after one or two years. While those who claimed ownership of being Lagosians are still tenants.

Cost of living and high standard of life is making Lagos jobs pitiful and poor relative to what the city has become.

I relocated to Abuja years back from lagos where I used to drive hours on end from work to home, as at the time of typing this, 0720hrs I am still chilling in my bed but I will still be at work by 9am, it takes me 30 minutes to drive from my house which is in a surbub to my office in Central area then the astonishing road network that Wike has embarked on in Abuja has even made it easier, nothing will ever make me go back to Lagos again.

Overpopulation is strangling Lagos and reducing drastically the quality of life.

The FG should help Lagos by redirecting critical strategic infrastructure to other parts of the country to reduce population inflow into Lagos.

Let Lagos breath!

Those small boys are into fraud and illicit activities. With time, the full weight of the law will be upon them.

SouthEast is the next big thing in Nigeria currently. Every State in the region is being modernized and opened up with dual carriageway. Anambra, Abia, Enugu and Imo governors are changing the narrative. Ebonyi governor must sit up. No time for excuses in Igboland again.
Re: Why Graduates Are Leaving Lagos For Smaller Cities by EmekaA125(m): 8:12am On Jul 14, 2025
God bless SE/SS.

God bless Igboland.

We must do whatever it takes to right the wrongs of yesteryears in our region.
