Senator Shehu Sani’s post highlights top African countries with high literacy rates, such as Seychelles (96.2%) and Libya (91%), crediting leaders like Muammar Gaddafi, whose 1977 "Popular Revolution" and oil-funded education programs boosted literacy despite his controversial dictatorship, as noted in a 2011 UNESCO report on Libya’s pre-war education gains.

The omission of Nigeria, with nearly 5 million out-of-school adolescent girls per Malala Fund 2023 data, sparks regional debate, with replies blaming northern Nigeria’s political neglect, where a 2018 World Bank study found literacy rates as low as 35% due to conflict and underfunding.

Gaddafi’s salute is surprising given his global vilification, but a 2009 UN Development Programme analysis shows Libya’s literacy rose from 25% in 1969 to over 90% by 2011, suggesting his education policies had measurable success before the 2011 civil war disrupted progress.

All the ten countries have tiny populations except for South Africa. And many of them have oil, gold and diamonds.

Population of Seychelles is 119,773 and actual population of educated people is 115K.

That paltry number is far less than the population of educated people in in some compounds in Nigeria so comparing such two countries is a statistical fallacy.

What has he done, and what are the results of his advocacy in this regard?

At least he can’t be ignorant of Obasanjo and Atiku’s UBEC established 26 years ago to provide matching federal funds to ensure local and state governments have all children in free schools compulsorily.

Those countries up there are so small. If Ekiti were to be a country wouldn't it make that list because that is the state which almost every house hold has at least a professor. 😁

Nigeria's current educational trajectory makes it highly unlikely to secure a spot in the top twenty most literate African nations in the next 50 years!
This concerning trend is often linked to the calculated and deliberate efforts of some Northern elites who seemingly prefer to keep young individuals out of school.
They appear to be content with a system where these youth are reliant on begging(Almajiri) including scouting round for basic provisions like "kose da kunnu" PAP & AKARA and are given minimal financial aid, all while their own offspring benefit from elite education both within Nigeria and abroad.
