Happy 91st Birthday Prof. Wole Soyinka The Lion of African Literature Why Soyinka Believes in Traditional Yoruba Religion Against Christianity Wole Soyinka born on July 13, 1934, is a renowned Nigerian playwright, poet, novelist, and essayist. He is celebrated for his literary achievements and his outspoken activism against political oppression, which led to imprisonment and exile. He was the first African to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986. The Yoruba Ijebu Egungun Masquerade That Fell the Anglican Church of Rev. J. J. Ransome Kuti Anglican priest, the Reverend J. J. Ransome Kuti carried out his ministry in defiance of the traditional priests with total confidence, as vividly described by Wole Soyinka in his autobiography, "Aké: The Years of Childhood" "… Rev J.J. was away on one of his many mission tours. He travelled a lot, on foot and on bicycle, keeping in touch with all the branches of his diocese and spreading the Word of God. There was frequent opposition but nothing deterred him. One frightening experience occurred in one of the villages in Ijebu. He had been warned not to preach on that particular day, which was the day for an egungun outing, but he persisted and held a service. The egungun procession passed while the service was in progress and using his ancestral voice, called on the preacher to stop at once, disperse his people and come out to pay obeisance. Rev J.J. ignored him eople and come out to pay obeisance. Rev J.J. ignored him. The egungun then left, taking his followers with him but, on passing the main door, he tapped on it with his wand three times. Hardly had the last member of his procession left the church premises then the building collapsed. The walls simply fell down and the roof disintegrated. Miraculously however, the walls fell outwards - anywhere but on the congregation itself. Rev J.J. calmed the worshippers, paused in his preaching to render a thanksgiving prayer, then continued his sermon."

IbileIfe:Today, in the midst of the revelation of God's power and how men can walk in it, the egungun cannot try the nonsense with a true Church of God. Especially if the assembly is a Pentecostal assembly with a true man of God overseeing the assembly. The house itself would have been anointed and dedicated to God Almighty before any service is conducted in it. So, if the egungun taps it as he did in this story, then, two things could happen: 1. He could immediately come face to face with God's wrath. Anything could happen to him on the spot. Nothing will happen to the building. 2. Nothing may happen to him if God decides to overlook his actions. This will depend on how wicked he has been in this world before that day. Nothing will happen to the building too. Ignorance is the power the devil has over any Believer in Christ. "The people who know their God shall be strong and shall do exploits." The more knowledgeable you are as a Christian, the more ascendancy you have over the powers of hell. |

Christianity has nothing to say or do with other religions so true Christians don't preach against other religions it's our teachings that exposes falsehood and since false religions was built on the learner in Christianity will discern that we are not on the same page with other religions but speaking against them in the public is totally unchristian because there is freedom of speech, expression and worship. As Christians our speech publicly should not be offensive {Matthew 10:16} there is nothing that could make any religion attack true Christians because we have nothing against worshipers of other religions and we don't go about condemning them for their beliefs it's only interested persons who gives us their times to study with us that can see the difference not everyone since we don't shout in their streets! Matthew 12:19 |

MaxInDHouse:Is there power in your religion? Christianity without power is not Christianity. If that's your brand of Christianity, then I'm afraid, you've been sold a fake Jesus. "For the Kingdom of God is not by word but by power." 1 Corinthians 4:20. And this Kingdom of God is within every believer (Luke 17:21). By it, we command the 'Greater Works Jesus talked about. |

MaxInDHouse:Are you concerned about what any man has done or has not done? Should you not be concerned rather about what Jesus said you would do? |

| Re: Why Soyinka Believes In Traditional Yoruba Religion Against Christianity by GothamCities: 5:50pm On Jul 15, 2025 |
MaxInDHouse:I don't answer irrelevant questions. There's no human being who I can set as my yardstick above what Jesus said I should do or not do. Whether anyone did it or not is not my problem. Jesus didn't ask me to look for any man who has done what He said I should do before I do it. |

GothamCities:So you don't understand what Jesus said, it's about GREATER WORKS than he did. That's exactly what my own religion has done and we keep doing greater works than what Jesus did till date! ![]() |

MaxInDHouse:Jesus didn't say your religion will do something please. He spoke to you as an individual. Not as a religion. |

GothamCities:Guy i don't want useless arguments. My religion has done GREATER WORKS than Jesus did but if you feel that's not what Jesus meant then present or mention any individual who has done it. Perhaps you think Jesus lied if you can't point to any individual who has done that! ![]() |

MaxInDHouse:Guy, Jesus didn't say your religion will do greater works. Please be informed. Jesus said 'you' will do greater works. Not your religion. If you don't understand what I mean, take the book 'God's Generals' and read. Maybe you'll understand. Or wait for a time when I shall free up my table to start showing greater works to atheists by visiting their homes and having encounters streamed and posted to Nairaland. Perhaps you would understand. Jesus described the signs that'll follow those who believe. To the best of my knowledge, the signs are not following you, neither are they following your so called religion. Here's how Paul said he'll identify true believers in 1 Corinthians 4:19: "But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord is willing, and then I will find out not only what these arrogant people are saying, but what power they have." And here's how Peter described Jesus' works in Acts 10:38: "And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him." But if you still don't understand it, don't bother. I am only here to educate you, not to argue with you. You might understand some day if you open your heart to the true Jesus. |

Jesus said: "But you will receive power when the holy spirit comes upon you, and you will be witnesses of me in Jerusalem, in all Ju·deʹa and Sa·marʹi·a, and to the most distant part of the earth.” Act 1:8 Jesus only preached within the land of Israel but his disciples will reach lands that Jesus never stepped his foot during his ministry. Jesus only preached in his mother tongue but his disciples will preach in all the languages of the earth. Jesus only faced opposition in Israel but his disciples will be persecuted throughout the earth. Jesus only gathered 500 people after his three years ministry his disciples will gather millions. Jesus only preached for three years but many of his disciples will preach and teach for decades. Jesus couldn't form a global family of peace loving worshipers despite all his preaching and teaching even on the very day he died his close confidant still used weapon on opposition but his disciples will erase the use of weapons in the hearts of millions across the earth. These are works Jehovah's Witnesses have done today that's GREATER than what Jesus did! |

MaxInDHouse:My dear, I believe you can read and write English. If you really do, go and sit down to this discussion and see how disjointed to the discussion your request is. Jesus said you would do greater works. If you're not doing greater works, it's either because you're ignorant or you're not a true follower of Jesus. Not because Jesus lied. As I said earlier, I mentioned you for your education and not for argument. So, have a nice day. |

GREATER WORKS is what Jesus said his disciples will do so if you can't find such then you have misapplied the scriptures period. Meanwhile my own religion has done lots of greater works than Jesus did! MaxInDHouse: GothamCities: |

MaxInDHouse:I will still tell you for the upteenth time that Jesus didn't say your religion will do greater works. He said 'you', not your religion. And I've given you clues to where you'll see many individuals who have done many greater works as Jesus promised. It's a promise if Jesus and He has fulfilled that promise. Read the book 'God's Generals'. Or you wait for me to Livestream the manifestation of God's power towards atheists in the coming days. What signs follow your religion? Where are the miracles of Christ in your congregations? Where is the proof of the anointing? Where is the power? The kingdom of God is not within you if you're simply doing what anybody can do. Read again 1Cor. 4:19, Luke 21:17 and Acts 10:38!if you missed anything. |
