9 Things You’ll Only Understand If You Live In Surulere by eyesoflagos(op): 3:46am On Jul 14, 2025
Surulere isn’t just an area — it’s an identity. Tucked in the heart of Lagos Mainland, it’s a melting pot of vibes, hustle, nostalgia, and just the right amount of drama. From legendary football pitches to unexplainable NEPA behavior, Surulere has its own rhythm — and if you’ve ever lived here, you’ll definitely relate to these 9 unique experiences. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

1. Everyone Is a Lowkey Footballer 🏆

Whether it’s watching, playing, betting, or coaching from the sidelines — football is life. Even if you’re not playing, trust that every street has a Messi or Ronaldo in the making. Just pass by Teslim Balogun Stadium on a Saturday and you’ll see.

2. “We Have Light” Is Never Guaranteed 🔌

Your neighbor might shout “Up NEPA!” but you’ll still find yourself resetting your gen because the light didn’t reach your flat. Some houses even have “VIP light” — their side gets it, yours doesn’t. It’s science. Lagos science.

3. Mama Calabar Joints Everywhere 🍛

You don’t need to Google food spots here. Just follow the aroma of Afang soup and white rice. Every street has a Mama Calabar that serves large portions and small attitude — but we love her anyway.

4. The Street G-Wagon Family 🚘

There’s always that one mansion in the middle of bungalows. The gate is taller than the house next door, and on Sunday mornings, they roll out like royalty. No one knows what they do — and we don’t ask.

5. BRT Buses Are a Way of Life 🚌

Forget Uber. Real Surulere people know how to time BRTs like pros. And if you sit by the window and catch the breeze on a sunny day? That’s the Surulere version of soft life.

6. All Roads Lead to Shoprite (And You Know It) 🛍️

Agreed, there are other malls. But somehow, no matter your plans, you end up at the Surulere Shoprite at Leisure Mall. Whether it’s a date, small chops, or just “to chill,” it’s the area code headquarters.

7. You’ve Mastered the Pothole Slalom 🏃‍♂️💦

You don’t walk on Surulere roads — you dodge. Between water puddles, random ditches, and mysteriously open manholes, every walk is a mini Olympics. But hey, it builds character.

8. Sundays = Church, Rice, and Generators 🔊

On Sundays, you’ll hear gospel music from three different churches on your street. After service? White rice, stew, and diesel fumes. It’s the Surulere Sabbath tradition.

9. You Have a “Guy” for Everything 📞

Need to fix your phone, buy second-hand kicks, or get cheap Wi-Fi? You’ve got a guy. In fact, Surulere might have the highest number of plug-to-population ratio in all of Lagos.
👀 Final Thoughts:

Living in Surulere is a beautiful paradox. It’s chill, chaotic, loud, warm, and full of character. Whether you’re born and raised or just passing through, one thing’s for sure — Surulere will always leave a mark.

OP seems to be right. Surulere is all he just described. Akinsilere - Aguda where my aunt lives is all he just described. wink

Why everybody won't be a low-key footballer? See tejuosho, see national stadium, see teslim right opposite, not to talk of..

All of this can be said about most areas in Lagos. I read this and you can easily repeat the same about my area too.

Food is very very cheap in Surulere and is everywhere. They still serve amala at N200 and meat at N200. N1,000 is enough to eat bellefull at Amoke Alamala and many other food joints.

Night life is cool with most joints operating 24 hours.

Road network to Island and other parts of Lagos is a plus.

Public defecation in Surulere? Well, I won't be surprised if areas like Ojuelegba where many non-residents work in garages and some sleep in shops are engaging in that. But Surulere remains largely cleaner than most parts of the mainland.

One funny thing you forget is the drug addiction level, especially Falolu, Ekololu, Obele, Adeniran, Joseph Robertson. Akerele, Masha, Kilo, Ikate. grin grin grin grin grin

are all these not exaggerations, half truths and fiction?

"all roads lead to shoprite"

"Mama Calabar Joints Everywhere"....

oga, how now?

"BRT Buses Are a Way of Life"

does BRT operate within Surulere moving from street to street or it just passes through all the way to costain that you say it is a way of life?

in the places BRT operates in Lagos, is it not a way of life?

calm down with all this unnecessary hype

I can even read people are making comments that Aguda is Surulere. Lol. Very funny. So, all the adjacent areas are surulere. Lol. No be my area? Even, you will say Ijeshatedo is surulere. Funny people. A very wrong way to describe Surulere. This OP doesn't live there. I am sure he lives in adjacent areas, or have friends there. Just imagine how he described Surulere. Even said Surulere people are BRT takers. This was where I knew he doesn't belong to Surulere. Even Ojuelegba .....any potholes there? Or this guy smokes something else?
Re: 9 Things You’ll Only Understand If You Live In Surulere by oluxmondd2: 11:00am On Jul 14, 2025
Surulere is an overrated slum. Do you want to talk about the insecurity? Or the state of the area when it rains? Masha, Kilo, Shitta, Lawanson Road, Itire etc. The only thing you enjoy is that it has great proximity to lots of places in Lagos.
Re: 9 Things You’ll Only Understand If You Live In Surulere by Lukuluku69(m): 11:01am On Jul 14, 2025
Nice write up but you can say this for other areas of Lagos. I used to have my Aunt stay at Ishola Street and my Uncle and Cousins at Love Garden way back in the 70s. It was a real cool place to be.

As for your BRT thing, the Buses just passed thru the outer Surulere and not inside.

Football? Almost every Area in Lagos play that Game. Ask those that grew up and are still staying on the Island about the Isale Eko playing Ground, Campus/Ajele etc.

Your Number 4 really caught my attention. We all know what they do but we can't say it because they are our neighbours. We know what's up but we just look the other way....

Thank you ...you have very good manners and well oiled social skills, I've noticed that most od our people in Nigeria hardly ever give credit or applaud a good effort or even an excellent presentation ...they must have something of their own to say...so they sound like you have not said or written anything spectacular...🤔
I think between Gen X and Gen Z alot of things have gone wrong ....every value that the boomer generation benefitted from that seems to have shaped them into a relatively polite, courteous and civil generation began eroding gradually from the Gen X...and sadly now its all gone ( wait for those who will leave the subject matter and start trolling the OP or even me writing this....sad!!!😥 )
We have a generation of very selfish, uncouth, insensitive and disrespectful bunch and we think we can bins together politically to change the system when we're the worst behave generation....and please don't even try to equate Aptitude ( we've got a lot of that) but we fall very short in the real thing- ATTITUDE (the key to driving the change we so desperately desire in our nation).....make I rest abeg!

You are sport on, but you missed some valid points, what about good musicians and won nabe musicians, Lawanson other side, Ikate and Itire close to Ilasamaja claiming Surulere grin grin. Electricity is much better now, I can't remember the last time I put on my generator.
