Recently, the social space has been awash with news of Goodluck Jonathan's second wife. It came as a surprise to Nigerians that GEJ has a second wife. For most Bayelsans however, it was an open secret. One can't help but wonder how different Nigeria today could have been if Jonathan had chosen her to be first lady instead of Patience Jonathan. Class and refinement will always be head above brute forcefulness associated with the office of the first lady during Jonathan's time in office. We must recall that it was Patience Jonathan's tiff with and public dressing down of Rotimi Amaechi at the Okrika water front event that pushed the latter into the arms of opposition forces marshalling against Jonathan. Amaechi was able to channel resources to the emergent candidacy of Buhari and the rest is history as they say. The office of the River state governor is a very powerful and strategic one. We can see this in how Tinubu is doing everything possible to ensure control of the governor sitting in that office. In the 2023 elections, Tinubu, Obi and Atiku all personally visited Wike just to have River state in their camp. Wike went on to work in Tinubu's favour and Tinubu won. But I digress. Patience Jonathan created too many enemies for her husband. Perhaps, one could surmise that she never really understood her office and how it could be leveraged for the betterment of her husband's political standing. Or maybe, she was too much for Jonathan to control. Needless to say, she was one of the reasons he lost that election. Of course little is known about Jonathan's second wife so we really can't postulate on how she would have behaved if she was first lady instead. But one particular reason points to why she would have been a better choice for Jonathan. GEJ was in office for six years and not once did anyone hear of his second wife. Ordinarily, any woman who is a wife to a Nigerian president, would want everyone to know. She didn't do that. She runs one of the best schools in Abuja today. A woman who isn't seasoned in administration and human resource management wouldn't be able to do that. If only Jonathan had gotten it right, Nigeria will be in a very different place right now.

Softmirror:I'm glad you asked because I've been wondering the same too. I think forces in the north are preparing to push for a second Jonathan term in 2027. They know it is rightfully still the turn of the south at the presidency and don't trust when Obi said he'll do just one term. Jonathan himself had made the same promise before 2015 to run for just one term. However now they know he is constitutionally barred from running again if he wins in 2027. I think the second wife publicly announcing and celebrating her Doctorate is her positioning herself to be first lady if Jonathan wins again. She won't be doing that if Jonathan hadn't told her he was being considered. |

Dogalmighty17:You 'think' not that she personally told you or Jonathan. But this is your wishful thinking. |

It's quite appalling how people like you tend to see the whole people/world through your myopic lenses. The fact that you aren't aware of something doesn't automatically mean that others don't know about the same thing. Anyone who has known GEJ, at least before he became a governor, and almost every politically exposed Nigerian, and informed Nigerians in general, knows that he has two wives. And of course, it's this second wife that gave birth to his two biological children, a male and female, not two males as some people have erroneously asserted somewhere on this forum. |
