Friendliness isn't enough. Performance is critical. The days where presidents or their chosen ones won elections through brazen rigging are long gone. Performance by the president is now fundamental. Had Jonathan's performance been much better, he wouldn't have lost to Buhari.

Unfortunately for Tinubu, his economic reforms, though necessary, has come with a lot of pain. The ignorant Northern masses don't blame Buhari who ruined the economy, but Tinubu who is repairing the damage.

That is why the massive borrowing of $24bn should be taken note of. I suspect part of it is to initiate an infrastructure construction boon that will turn heads. Buharis road rehabilitation were a vote winner with many, including the educated.

That may not be enough. The Northern masses may demand more. That's where the proposed Forest Guards come in. Insecurity in the North is through the roof.

It's a new security outfit that will be taxed with taking on the murderous killer herdsmen and Fulani bandits. Unfortunately, I have serious doubts if Nuhu Ribadu is the man for the job. I would prefer Marwa to handle security. He is a crowd puller when he does his job.

Tinubu may still need more. The unavoidable hardship still hangs over him. He will need to open the borders, end import bans on many products, and slash unnecessarily high duties on many goods such as cars for instance.
