You know, I wish you didn't collect... and the money back to the former... landlord... or the notice that was given wasn't up to the legal. statutory...you could have a legal. statutory...that the house has been sold now and the former landlord was so kind to...pay you...your landlord a case, but your case is becoming weaker

So, case, you are looking weaker to eat. Are you the lawyer who is supposed to use the money to pay for another place? ... Also, start looking elsewhere ... Also, because... it seems the new landlord... because... doesn't want you in his property...

I think you're right. But all he's left to do is to plead for a month extra to vacate since has not been able to find a house. He doesn't even have money to fund any case that would result to that. So, he's at the mercy of the new landlord.

I have a case like this but not like his case.

Mine, I paid rent in October 1st (expiration rent date) to the designated account landlord gave me when I packed in few years back, when he came back from Canada in December, he gave me a letter, telling me he's increasing the rent. When I opened the letter, I saw that it will take effect from March this year.
I don't know what to do because, I am not intending to pay any money aside the increased new rent in this coming October, as he's yet to give me a receipt for that payment which may be that he's expecting me to balance up with the new rent before issuing me the receipt.

What do you suggest I do?
The situation on ground will depend on many things
1. Have you been making yearly payment of rent before?

2. Did the narration of the money you sent into your Landlord’s account read that it is for rent for that period of time?

3. What date is on the letter he gave you for the rent increment and what date did he hand the letter to you?

4. The state you reside in etc

5. Did you sign tenancy agreement that gives the landlord power to increase his rent at specified intervals?

5. I didn't sign any letter of such. This is the first time he's doing something like this. He usually remind (letters) the tenants 3 months before the expiration of their rent on any increments. Though he usually breaks the total House rent by specific amount for each month.
I confronted him after he gave me the letter to know why the yearly increase, and the amount, he said it's the Nigeria's economy that by the way I can be paying monthly as he specified in letter and not wait till the rent expiration date to pay once.

You paid Oct 2024.
In Dec 2024 he gave you a letter saying that his rent will increase.
That means the letter is giving u an "ahead notice " of which your next rent will take effect. In Oct 2025.
If you paid your rent complete as at that time, the effect is Oct 2025 as you are on yearly rent.
If you haven't paid completely you will incur the increase on the balance for the outstanding month starting from March

Many landlords collect their house rent in advance but from what you post here it means that you pay yours in arrears (for the service you already used) cos how can you make payment in October 2024 and it would read house rent 2024? With that, giving you notice in December of an impending increment in March means he has given you 3 months notice to get prepared for the increment meaning that if you don’t like it, you have 3 months to decide on whether to remain in his house or not

Half of the rent was refunded by the old landlord, he just transferred it to my account.

The rent they refunded to you, how did that happened? You consented to it? They forced the cash into your hands or you voluntarily gave them your account number?

You were refunded 6 months of your rent which start from May to October 2025. They gave you 3 months quit notice which start from 24th April and end July 24th and this 3 months is rent free

To me there is no case here because you collected the refunded money from the landlord and he gave 3 month rent free to look for another apartment.

You misunderstood the whole thing.
"House rent 2024 on the narration of my transaction to him" means the house rent was paid in 2024, covering till beginning of October, 2025. There's nothing like advance payment. Coming back after two months I paid the house rent to increase the rentage, while saying it takes effect from 3 months after, is the bone of the contention here.

I have never seen such because I have always been on yearly payment. I have paid my rent, he knows when my rent expired and probably got my alert, he said he's not aware. If he had notified me 3 months before my rent expired of such increment, I would have planned for that.

Well, March 2025, has passed, I didn't balance him up, I'm am not intending to balance up when I paid the new house rent this October, 2025.
He has no right to come in between the year I have already paid and increase the rent, and expect me to balance up. It's not done anywhere.
