Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by Islie(op): 6:47pm On Jul 16, 2025
By Okiki Adeduyite

A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, is no stranger to party defections. With his confirmed exit from the Peoples Democratic Party, this marks yet another turn in his political journey.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged,” Atiku said in a letter dated July 14, 2025,” Atiku said on Wednesday in his resignation letter to the PDP.

This marks the latest in a series of high-profile switches across Nigeria’s political landscape.

Below, PUNCH Online revisits five notable times Atiku has changed parties and what motivated each move.

1999–2006: Peoples Democratic Party

In 1999, Atiku was elected governor of Adamawa State under the PDP. Before he could be sworn in, he was selected as running mate to Olusegun Obasanjo, who went on to win the presidential election. Atiku served as Vice President from 1999 to 2007.

2006-2009: PDP to Action Congress

Atiku left the PDP in 2006 following a fallout with President Obasanjo over succession plans. He joined the Action Congress to contest the 2007 presidential election. He lost to PDP’s Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

AC – PDP (2009)

In 2009, Atiku returned to the PDP after clashing with then-AC leader and current President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu. He sought the PDP presidential ticket in 2011 but lost to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.

PDP – All Progressives Congress (2014)

Ahead of the 2015 elections, Atiku again defected, this time to the newly formed APC, citing lack of internal democracy in the PDP.

He contested the APC presidential primary but lost to Muhammadu Buhari, who later defeated Jonathan in the general election.

APC – PDP (2017)

Atiku returned to the PDP in 2017, criticising the APC for failing to deliver on its promises and sidelining party stakeholders. He secured the PDP’s presidential ticket for the 2019 election but lost to Buhari.

PDP – New platform (2025)

Amid continued internal divisions, zoning controversies, and fallout from the 2023 loss to President Tinubu, Atiku has again parted ways with the PDP.

Though he has yet to announce a new political party, Atiku, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Senate President David Mark and other coalition leaders have officially adopted the African Democratic Congress as the platform to spearhead President Tinubu’s defeat in the 2027 election.

What is wrong in changing party? How about having a law against party defections.

That's why politics is seen by the wise as a dirty game.

1999 : PDP
2007 : AC
2011 : PDP
2015 : APC
2019 : PDP
2023 : PDP
2027 : ADC

All in the quest for Villa keys. The political party is not the problem, Atiku Abubakar is.

Atiku…… will still contest even after Tinubu’s successor, that’s for sure. He’s got a large pocket fueled by public embezzlement.
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by Twist4u: 7:37pm On Jul 16, 2025
Atiku is the most unstrategic Politician bar non in Nigeria.

5 times presidential aspirant & failure.

My Question has always remained: WHAT IS ATIKU'S AGENDER FOR NIGERIA.huh

5 times aspirant and one cannot place hold of his vision for Nigeria.
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by EmperorIsaac(m): 7:38pm On Jul 16, 2025
This is his last change, forgive him. Except, of course, he admires the President of Uganda so much. grin

Atiku is like a chameleon, he change parties like he change his clothes.
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by Softmirror: 7:40pm On Jul 16, 2025
This is a pattern! Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has never stayed in a party past two election cycles.

He was a founding member of PDP and became Vice President of Nigeria in 1999. He won reelection in 2003, and that was it. He bolted after the second election cycle.

He joined Action Congress in 2006, clinched its presidential candidacy, but lost in the 2007 election. After that election cycle Atiku ditched AC and returned to PDP in 2010 after President Umaru Yaradua’s death. He spent just one election cycle in AC.

Back in PDP Atiku competed for the 2011 presidential ticket but fell to President Goodluck Jonathan. He grew distant in PDP and ultimately jumped to the newly formed APC merger in 2014. He spent only one election cycle in PDP.

In APC he entered the presidential primary but placed third behind first runner up Rabiu Kwankwaso and the eventual winner General Muhammadu Buhari. He abandoned APC in 2018 for a third spell in PDP. He spent just one election cycle in APC.

He secured PDPs presidential candidacy for the 2019 election but lost. He deserted the party yet returned in 2021. In 2022 he grabbed the partys ticket again for the 2023 election but lost to Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. Just like in 2007 Atiku has now forsaken PDP for his newest venture ADC. He spent only one election cycle in PDP.

Ironically each time he exits PDP he stirs factions and hypes his departure with media spectacles but always ends up on the losing side.

Should he lose the 2027 presidential election it would hardly shock anyone to see him abandon ADC.

Na shameless man. He's busy dragging tickets with those he's old enough to father. He was VP when Nigeria was still better, for 8 good years. He sold almost everything belonging to Nigeria to himself, proxies and friends. He won't taste that presidency. He was seen limping yesterday. He was even trying to avoid camera but he was captured. He's using official age like most of the civil servants in his era did. He's well older than the age is claiming.
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by fatherjesse(m): 7:40pm On Jul 16, 2025
He already lost the opportunity to become president of Nigeria. Reasonable Nigerians now see desperation which will only put Nigeria in the same situation as Tinubu now, Fod forbid
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by xynerise: 7:40pm On Jul 16, 2025
He has nothing to offer, hence his desperation. Keep trying though

It is none of una concern. As for now he is a private citizen. He can change until he achieve his ambition too
Re: Five Times Atiku Changed Party, Why by Nchenches: 7:43pm On Jul 16, 2025
Because he wants to fulfill a life ambition to answer president of Nigeria, not that he has any better to offer the masses of Nigeria.
