Just to add to other comments above, You could be offered an admission without GRE, but scholarship or zero deficit as you mentioned is not a guarantee or automatic with the admission. Two critical ingredients to be considered for a scholarship if your proposed program of study states funding available are GRE and CGPA above 3.5/4.0. If a school says GRE is not required for admission, YES but admission is not scholarship, GA or TA position. Higher Education is witnessing a funding cuts, only exceptional and outstanding applicants would qualify. Scholarship hopefuls should endeavor to write GRE or GMAT going forward among other requirements. Poormanpikin: |

Hello guys, I am trying to book an appointment for an F2 visa, but it keeps showing that there are no available dates in Abuja. Does anyone know when new dates might become available? I would appreciate if someone could notify me once appointments open up. Thank you. |

For most fully funded PhD program in the US, these are some insights you need to know: In a typical year for PhD application, most schools have over 150 applicants (domestic and international); infact, schools with application fee waivers will have x3 applicants for a limited space of average 5 to 18 admits. Ranking of applicants: 1. Those with prior master's will be ranked higher. 2. Those with research potential (publications) will be ranked. 3. Those with strong letters from Professor will be ranked as well. 4. GRE. This is the last. Those with good GRE will be ranked (the optional GRE is just a bait, when it comes to funding most give priority to this exam for full funding) Imagine 20% of applicants having all these four criterias competing for few spaces. Do you think you'd stand a chance? Remember, these applicants are from China, Japan, India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Korea, US, Singapore and other countries with strong University Research system and highly ranked universities. It's a competitive process. That's what determines the interview and offers.

chinny09:■■ U.S.A consulars usually do not cancel a B1/B2 visa if your study visa (F1) is approved or denied because both visas are for different purposes. ▪︎▪︎ But sometimes, they may cancel one for the other in order to not put you into confusion at the port of entry. For example, if you are going for a Phd, and your F1 visa is approved, they may cancel your already gotten B1/B2 visa because you will likely stay longer with the visa and most of the time F1 visa is a multiple entry type , so the need to combine it with a B1/B2 is useless. This type of cancelation is not your fault , so it is called “Canceled Without Prejudice (CWOP)” and in that case, it will not affect your future visa applications on B1/B2. ●▪︎ However, If your F1visa application is denied based on gross misrepresentation or obvious fraud, then a hardline visa officer is authorized to cancel your already gotten B1/B2 visa because it will automatically be assumed that you got the B1/B2 visa with the same fraudulent means. Note: Combining B1/B2 visa with an F1 might cause confusion to visa holders who are not conversant with the rules. Eg, if you enter the U.S with a B1/B2 visa this week Wednesday while your school resumes next week Monday, then the law does not permit you to attend classes. You must exit the U.S and re enter with an F1 visa before you can start your classes. 👍 |

Poormanpikin:The AI responded to your question appropriately based on how you put the question, since you didn't feed it well. If you obtain a full-ride scholarship, including a tuition waiver, health insurance, and stipends, you will probably have a zero deficit, i.e., the cost of attendance will be equal to the financial assistantship remuneration. I like your energy! Keep the fire burning. I will choose Florida from the list of locations you mentioned earlier. Even though cities in each state have their differences in terms of cost of living. |

Good morning guys How else can I get recommendation letters, I am not in close touch with any of my university lecturers as I graduated since 2014 |

freshStarz:Try to get at least one of your formal lecturers. Your current supervisor at work, line managers, or previous employers are fine. You can combine, I.e., academic plus work. I used this method then. |

Olaoke16:Thank you, sir. If my tuition fee is waived, I'll receive a monthly stipend, and my health insurance will be covered, resulting in a $0.00 deficit on my I-20, will this status change if I plan to live in a city with a higher cost of living? Will that be factored into the calculation? Thank you for your response, and God bless you. |

Thanks for your response Efebotere. Please I would like to know if the 3 month single entry refers to F1 visas? |

freshStarz:■■ You cannot replace academic appraisal / recommendation with any other if it is mandated. Go to your alma mater with evidence of studentship and any current HOD, Senior lecturer , etc in your dept can do it for you (though possibly with a cost) once your alumnus is confirmed. ■● If that is not the case you may look out for social or professional recommendation. 👍 |

chinny09:■■ It cannot work for F1 visa. The only restriction they can place on an F1 visa holder is to have an authorization letter from your DSO if you need to travel home during school session. Pls focus on obtaining your visa first. 👍 |

Spot on !!! This is the template. Chinese and Indian students dont play with GRE, its their JAMB to Havard, Yale and other top 10 US Universities. With Federal cuts and limited average admits for PhD and Masters, scholarship hopefuls must tick all the dots listed below. FunnyDude: |

Abdulmgr:■■ Well, Nairalanders will always notify us of newly available dates but no one can tell you (not even the embassy staffs, except those absolutely concern) when the new available dates will roll out. ●▪︎ My advice is for you to pick any date in any location so that you will have access to apply for emergency appointment as the last joker. 👍 |

chinny09:They are independent of each other. People have different categories of visa and none negates the other. You just have to make sure that while you are a student you make sure you enter on your F1 status. If you are denied one category, it doesn't cancel the other. |
| Re: General USA Student Visa Enquiries-part 18 by GboyegaD(m): 6:32pm On Jul 16, 2025 |
Poormanpikin:That's not how it works. The department/graduate school has the amount they give in stipend however; International Student Office have a way of calculating your tuition with estimated cost of living. Don't over stress this issue. |

GboyegaD:■■ That does not matter . We should always post the fact of all visa policies. Not saying the fact or hiding the fact gives many people shock or hypertension. As an experienced traveler, i expect you to back the fact that B1/B2 visa may be canceled for an F1 visa approval based on CWOP. Okay what can a B1/B2 visa holder do in america that an F1 visa holder cannot do ? Therefore some visa officer may decide to cancel the visiting visa. Not every visa holder do the preparation him or herself. Her first visa might be done with genuine documentation while the last one is being done with a counterfeit documents without the consent of the applicant. The summary: One visa type can be canceled for the other if they serve almost the same purpose or if the last one serves better than the former. |
