When a man parades himself as a professor of economics, the least the public expects is intellectual honesty and economic literacy. Unfortunately, Governor Charles Soludo has recently proven to be lacking in both, particularly with his disparaging comments about the SABMiller brewery investment made during Peter Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State.

Soludo once described that brewery into which Obi wisely invested Anambra’s funds as “worth next to nothing.” Let that sink in. A sitting governor, former Central Bank of Nigeria chief, and self-proclaimed economic expert, publicly dismissed an investment that today pays over ₦300 million annually in taxes to the same government he now heads. If this is his definition of “nothing,” one shudders to imagine what qualifies as “something.”

Let’s break this down. A business paying ₦300 million in taxes is not just surviving; it is thriving. That figure does not account for the hundreds of direct and indirect jobs it sustains, the supply chains it activates, or the economic activity it stimulates within the local economy. In today’s Nigeria, where states scramble for internally generated revenue, an investment yielding hundreds of millions yearly is a goldmine, not a liability.

So, what exactly was Soludo thinking? Was it petty politics? Intellectual arrogance? Or simple ignorance disguised as sophistication? Whichever it was, his statement is not only economically indefensible but also deeply embarrassing for someone of his academic and professional pedigree.

Rather than acknowledge a successful investment that continues to pay dividends to the people of Anambra, Soludo chose to insult the intelligence of Ndi Anambra. His words reek of political bitterness, not economic logic.

This isn’t just about Peter Obi. It’s about a disturbing pattern of undermining progress for the sake of scoring cheap political points. It’s about a governor who would rather rewrite facts than build on existing successes. And it’s about a man who claims to be a professor, yet cannot grasp the simple economic truth that a revenue-generating enterprise is an asset, not a failure.

In the end, Soludo’s attack on the brewery investment is not a reflection on Peter Obi, it’s a reflection on his own poor judgment, warped priorities, and tragic descent from respected economist to political propagandist.

Anambra deserves better. Ndi Anambra are watching.
