Truvelisback:Because we believe the Quran is the word of Allah and translation will “adulterate” it and make it lose its potency. That being said. We offer salat which is a form of worship in Arabic but when it comes to requests like prayers you can do that in your native language. To put simply, worship means serving, glorifying and humbling oneself in the presence of God. What the general people call prayer is usually requests but relationship with God should be beyond requests. Thats where Islam comes in which means total submission to Allah’s will. Whether you get what you requested for or not. |

tunnyl:Does it mean the word of Allah came as Arabic? How would translation adulterate it and make it lose its potency? Secondly, you mentioned 'Salat'. Is Salat as potent as praying in Arabic? |

Truvelisback:Does it mean the word of Allah came as Arabic? Yes the word of Allah came in Arabic to prophet Mohammed. How would translation adulterate it and make it lose its potency? Put simply, Because you cannot adulterate God’s word. Or you might prefer the human answer: Language is a human construct which mostly springs from the culture of the people. Those people chose to name an object, entity, phenomenon whatever aligns with their beliefs and way of life. Translating the Quran which we use to pray salat to english or our native language means we know and accept the origin of that language and why a “Cat” is named a “Cat” and not named a “Ball” in English language while it is named “Ologini” in yoruba. Since we don’t know the origin of other languages and what culture or religion is tied to those languages we cannot perform solat with it. Secondly, you mentioned 'Salat'. Is Salat as potent as praying in Arabic? Salat is the prayer you see Muslims perform inside Mosques. It involves reciting words from the Quran, bowing our heads them going on the knees with our heads placed on the floor as a sign of humility and worship to Allah. When you are done with your salat you can then pray in your native language. You are not required to pray in Arabic for your personal requests. But when you want to worship Allah you must as a muslim recite words from the Quran. |

It's a way to encapsulate the contradictory parts under the guise of Arabic! Most of them don't really know Arabic, it's mostly memorization that still made some have faint understanding of it. |
