It Look Like The Beans In Nigeria Is Now GMO by fineboynl(op):
In 90s to 20s it takes about 4 hours in fire to get beans soften. And You either start cooking it in the morning if it’s for launch or afternoon if it’s dinner.

Some people even put the beans in hot water over night, But surprisingly nowadays beans get soften within 30mins or less than an hour.

I believe they are GMO

When you soak beans in water before cooking it , it will soften in 30 minutes .
This will help to cut the cooking time to say 30 minutes - 40 mins .
This has always been the norm .
To the best of my knowledge ,I do not think there is a GMO foodstuff in sale in Nigeria

If you want the beans to cook real fast don't add salt at the beginning. You add salt only when the beans is completely soft, close to the point of taking it down from the stove. If you add salt at the beginning, your beans will take forever to cook; the beans may even never cook real soft however long you cook it.

This explains it but doctors do advice to put salt at the earlier stages of cooking.

Growing up, we eat Iron bean in the East and it is easy to cook and very sweet, unfortunately, I don't get to see it anymore. The one they sell as Iron Bean, is not the one I grew up eat!

Fiofio is a kind of bean cooked outside the house with embers of firewood over night, very sweet and filling, but take 24 hours to cook.

I soaked bean one day as a bachelor, the bean did not get done and all my friends laughed at me that day

I think the reason could be because there were storage of beans in abundance back then, making them really really really dry before they got to consumers.
Unlike nowadays, people are eating beans almost as soon as they're harvested.

You must've noticed the same about rice too.
They don't swell like before, and they soften easily.
