Why More Youths Are Leaving Orthodox Churches For Pentecostal Fire In Lagos by lagostrendboy(op): 2:52am On Jul 20, 2025
Across Lagos, a quiet revolution is shaking the pews of Nigeria’s oldest churches. From Catholic cathedrals to Anglican sanctuaries, many are witnessing a slow but steady youth exodus — and they’re headed straight for the booming, energetic world of Pentecostalism.

This isn’t just about church doctrine. It’s about rhythm, relevance, and the rising hunger for a more personal, powerful, and performative spirituality. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

So why exactly are Gen Z and Millennials ditching traditional altars for flashing lights, fire-filled sermons, and Instagram-worthy Sunday services?
📉 The Orthodox Exodus: What’s Happening?

From Surulere to Ikeja, many orthodox churches — including Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, and Presbyterian denominations — are reporting dwindling youth participation. Young people show up at Christmas, Easter, and maybe weddings. But regular attendance? It’s shrinking fast.

“The service is too stiff,” says Dami, a 23-year-old student from Yaba. “I feel like I’m just ticking boxes, not connecting with God.”

🔥 Why Pentecostal Churches Are Winning Gen Z

Here are 7 reasons Pentecostal churches are pulling in young Lagosians by the thousands:

1. Music That Moves You

Worship at Pentecostal churches sounds more like a live concert than a choir recital. Afrobeats-infused gospel, LED lights, worship leaders with stage presence — it’s a vibe.

“I go to worship nights like I go to parties,” says Bolu, a 25-year-old designer. “Except I leave spiritually full.”

2. Relatable Messages

Pastors speak in today’s language. They talk about purpose, mental health, relationships, career growth — all wrapped in scripture.

3. Social Media Engagement

Instagram Lives. TikTok sermon clips. WhatsApp devotionals. Churches like Elevation Church, COZA, and The New are digital-native and always online.

4. Dress Culture

No pressure to wear head ties or formal suits. Sneakers, ripped jeans, and native wear are all welcome. It’s “come as you are” — and it shows.

5. Community & Belonging

Small groups, singles fellowships, game nights, volunteering — Pentecostal churches are building real social networks that fill the post-COVID loneliness gap.

6. Opportunity to Serve

Young people can join media teams, dance ministries, tech crews, drama units — it’s active, not passive worship.

7. Signs, Wonders & the Supernatural

Let’s be honest — Gen Z is spiritual. They want healing, prophecy, deliverance, and encounters. Pentecostal churches promise (and sometimes deliver) just that.
🙏🏾 The Orthodox Response: Are They Doing Enough?

Some orthodox churches are trying to catch up. Youth-focused services, praise nights, and digital outreach have been introduced — but often feel like afterthoughts.

“We had a praise event last year,” says Chuka, an Anglican youth leader. “But attendance was low. I think they see us as old-school.”

The structure and liturgy of orthodox churches — while rich in history — can feel too rigid for a generation raised on YouTube, reels, and emotional vulnerability.
🧠 What the Experts Say

Religious sociologist Dr. Ayodeji Alaba notes:

“It’s not that Gen Z doesn’t want God. They just want Him on their terms — expressive, immediate, and emotionally resonant.”

He adds that Pentecostalism offers “charisma over creed” — and that’s the language young people speak today.
🗣️ Voices From the Pew

Here’s what some Lagos youths had to say:

Temi (26): “At my Pentecostal church, I feel heard. I’ve prayed, cried, danced, and even gotten career mentorship.”

Victor (22): “I left the Catholic Church because I couldn’t relate. I needed more than rituals — I needed revival.”

🔚 Conclusion: A Church at a Crossroads

As Lagos evolves, so does its faith landscape. The rise of Pentecostal fire among youths isn’t a rejection of tradition — it’s a craving for transformation.

For orthodox churches, the question is no longer whether to adapt — it’s how fast they can do it before the next generation walks out the door for good.

Praises without spiritual connection is Jamboree.
Presently some people are going to church for entertainment not for spiritual connection. That's why some pastor are twisting bible to meet up or just to satisfy human wants.

As a Catholic myself, there's nothing you find in pentecostal churches that you won't find in Catholic churches. Absolutely nothing!! The problem of the church is that it is too big and leaves room for unserious members who know practically nothing about the church.

That's why whenever they are challenged about a doctrine they know nothing about, they cannot defend it. Genuine Catholics are those who belong to one society or association - those folks are sound in the word of God/teachings of the church and cannot leave the Universal Church for the new-generation churches.

Are Pentecostal churches also worshiping the statue of Mary as you're doing in catholic church?

Be whining your nipples! Catholics don't leave their churches. I worked with several Pentecost churches including RCCG and the Catholics I found there most are still Catholics till tomorrow even Osilama who is now a pastor in redeem.

Myself I cannot trade Catholicism for any fireless fire. Pentecost churches are the most fireless churches I have worked with. No, you won't understand.

Try handle the media department of a Pentecostal church and you will know you are not in church. So noisy and baseless. In Pentecostal churches Jesus is 5%, pastor 85%.

If I were a Christian, I’ll stick with orthodox churches.

Any church that will take you to heaven, please attend. Do not worship your church, but if your church is only about blessings, being happy, vision, joy, success, breakthrough, favour e.t.c, you may be heading to hell direction.

You can't serve God on your terms, you serve God on His terms. The creation cannot give terms to the creator.

Re: Why More Youths Are Leaving Orthodox Churches For Pentecostal Fire In Lagos by allthingsgood: 10:07am On Jul 20, 2025
The reason is that Pentecostal churches hustle for members like mad. Orthodox churches leave you to fight for your own salvation. While Pentecostal churches are run like business desperately and aggressively grabbing clients (members), orthodox churches are more faith based.

The reason is pentecostal churches areore like businesses and they are aggressive with grabbing customers (members), with promise of dividends (Gods blessing). Orthodox churches don't bother. Their preaching is different sef. Orthodox churches like catholic preaches that we were made to serve God. Pentecostal churches preach that God is to serve us, they are more flashy and fun. So which one will you go?

Same narrative all the time, we don't worship Mary, we honour her. You can continue with your long age narrative as long as it suits you.
Re: Why More Youths Are Leaving Orthodox Churches For Pentecostal Fire In Lagos by SeriouslySense(m):
I would not judge anyone or say anyone is better than the other. Each one has it own strength and weakness.

The important thing for me, is being saved, following Jesus, being decent and humble. Some of the church's need to regulate dressing, some people abuse freedom, and they should be careful. And some turn it to business and motivational gatherings. smiley

While other churchs are stuck in incorrect doctrines, like worshipping mary. Not that they worship mary directly and make it very obvious, but they always mention mary making her like a diety and then they ask mary to pray for them, when in Hebrews its says Jesus has removed the seperation between us and God and we can confidently go to the throne of grace, we have an eternal High preist who is advocating before God the Father.

For me, personally I love catholic Church, because i love order, but I dont accept their doctrine. And i dont really like pentacostal in Nigeria because I like order, and i dont like strict church's because i dont like too much rules, so I manage any Church i find myself.

I am just a human being that want to know God. God himself is the only Shephard.

One reason that a female friend gave is that in Catholic Church, if you got married in one branch and you relocated to another state, if your husband dies, you'll be abandoned because you didn't get married in that parish.

The Catholic Church honours mary and for your info , this is one of the reasons why the Catholic Church is unique n has endeared for many years n is still waxing Strong...
Op is wrong to say ppl are leaving the Catholic Church , maybe Anglican or other protestant churches but definitely not the Catholic Church....

Both denominations have their strengths and weaknesses... We are too concerned on which denomination is better instead of us to focus on God ... Satan is just smiling at all denominations today knowing that we are too divided to defend ourselves against his wicked activities from those that want to use terrorism to convert us to their religion... I repeat no church is perfect, there is wickedness in all Churches/denominations just as there is goodness..
