Labour Party Vice Presidential Candidate in the 2023 General Election, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has met Julius Abure, factional National Chairman of the Labour Party.

Datti, who promised to reconcile the factions and disgruntled stakeholders with Peter Obi said this during the National Executive Council meeting of the faction.

Datti also took a swipe at the ADC Coalition, saying the Government that follows is more important than removing the APC Government.

Datti Speaks

“Labour Party is not a party to walk away from.

“The successes, the history that Labour Party of Nigeria has recorded is unique and unprecedented."

“We presented clear records and evidence of 10 million votes scored in the last election, thereafter reduced to 6.1 million votes.

“The act of state capture is a more onerous task causing disunity and disaffection within political parties.”

“I am here as a peacemaker to reconcile divergent opinions.

“I’m very proud to say that I did attend meetings of a certain attempt for a coalition in Nigeria.

“Morally speaking, if your neighbourhood invites you to discuss security, you must attend.

“However, if you attend and they discuss other matters besides that, you are at liberty to restore yourself to your former position.

“I have attended and I have listened to the coalition attempts, yet I remain in the Labour Party.

“I am not one to sleepwalk into any political arrangements,”

“I must say, in the past, a coalition was made and a Nigerian government was voted out.

“I note with pleasure that this is what we as the Labour Party did in 2023 and what we are about to do again in 2027.

“However, the government that follows is even more important than the act of removing the government itself. A government was removed and what followed was disaster.”

"I intend to reconcile all factions and divergent opinions and this is what a leader should do."

"I recognise the Nenadi Usman-led faction and I also recognise the existing faction of Barrister Julius Abure and also recognise legally what INEC is doing in relating with the Abure faction."

"This I do, devoid of any personal interest, devoid of any ambition, and devoid of any animosity to any group whatsoever."

“I am glad also to note that from the comments of my boss, His Excellency Governor Peter Obi, he remains in the Labour Party.”

He vowed to rally all factions together, “for us to sit down, understand each other better and move forward.

He will be relegated from the vice presidential candidate to floor member in ADC

I told you people long time ago that Obi loves the attention of been Nigeria's leading opposition leader.

Do you know that Obi is endorsing Moghalu for Anambra Guber? A man that was produced by the Abure faction. After the Supreme Court Judgement, Nenadi immediately cancelled the Primary that was to be held in 4 days time, so when he endorsed Abure candidate, what are you expecting?

Anything you see Datti acting here today, Peter Obi is very much aware.

You can see Kenneth Okonkwo isn't a mad man afterall. Anybody that talks, na abuse.. ngwanu, Jagaban 101 don set, 100 marks.

In a surprising turn of events, the Labour Party (LP) has reportedly distanced itself from its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, while endorsing Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed as its flag bearer for the 2027 presidential election.

The decision, announced during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting led by the Julius Abure faction in Abuja on July 21, 2025, has sparked widespread debate within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Sources indicate that the Abure-led LP condemned Obi and Otti for their alleged involvement in an "illegal" NEC meeting held on April 9, 2025, in Abuja, which the party leadership deemed unconstitutional.

The faction accused the duo of undermining the party’s unity, with some leaders citing Otti’s comments about a potential “doomsday” for the Abure leadership as a direct threat.

Despite their contributions to the party’s prominence in the 2023 elections, where Obi secured over six million votes, the LP appears to be pivoting toward Baba-Ahmed, Obi’s former running mate, as a fresh face to lead its 2027 campaign.

Baba-Ahmed, a Kaduna-born politician and founder of Baze University, has been vocal about his belief in a new direction for Nigeria.

His recent statements on Arise Television, where he argued that Obi should not settle for a vice-presidential role in any coalition, may have bolstered his appeal within the party.

“The real coalition is of votes at the ballot box,” Baba-Ahmed emphasized, highlighting his focus on grassroots support over political alliances.

The decision to endorse Baba-Ahmed has raised eyebrows, particularly given Obi’s enduring popularity and Otti’s acclaimed governance in Abia. Critics argue the move could deepen the LP’s internal divisions, with some questioning the legitimacy of the Abure-led faction’s authority.

Meanwhile, Baba-Ahmed’s supporters see him as a principled leader capable of unifying the party and challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

As the LP navigates this turbulent period, political analysts suggest the endorsement signals a strategic shift, possibly aiming to consolidate support in northern Nigeria, where Baba-Ahmed hails from.

However, with Obi rumored to be exploring options with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition, the LP’s gamble on Baba-Ahmed could either reinvigorate the party or deepen its fractures ahead of the next election cycle.

The Labour Party has yet to release an official statement clarifying the endorsement, leaving room for speculation about the future of Obi, Otti, and the party’s direction.

The labour party already endorsed Datti for the presidential ticket. The aftermath of Wike's meeting with Abure is beginning to manifest but its another strategic mistake by APC. I won't explain. From the utterances of Datti against the coalition from day one, one could tell that he has been compromised. He's free to try but he didn't deliver his polling unit to Obi in 2023.

I have been having my suspicion since the last interview he granted after the coalition was formed.

Hobnobbing with abure who has gone to bed with wike is absolutely wrong.

Datti Ahmed should withdraw from abure nothing good will come out of it

Crude politics, yes, but this is another strategic mistake by the APC. Labour party zoning out their ticket to "Obi's man," Datti Baba Ahmed will only make Atiku's quest appear legitimate and kill any agitation for "Southern turn" by the Obidients. The same will apply if PDP zones their ticket to the North. The unintended consequence of that is that it will make it easier for Obi to agree to deputise Atiku without considerable backlash.

Peter Obi made a very fatal mistake by not building the labour party.Nobody can be president of Nigeria without a formidable party structure.

Peter Obi and Datti are still very much together. They are simply playing the two sides. One leg with Abure and one leg with Nenadi/Otti. Datti is just a placeholder for Peter Obi in LP. Once they pull out of ADC which is inevitable, they will return to LP.

Even Datti has leadership and people skills pass Obi.

You wanna lead a complex nation but cannot build a party.

Looking for ready made platforms every 4 years. What a shame!

What is he reconciling?
Abure is already a house boy to Wike and APC agent's.
LP and PDP is as good as gone.
Now the brainless Abure will know that it was Obi who made the LP popular.
Re: Yusuf Datti Attends Abure-led NEC Meeting, Promises To Reconcile factions (vid) by carzeem1: 6:25pm On Jul 21, 2025
Obi will rather scatter the votes than settle for vice.
That's what this constant romance with labour means.
Truth is Atiku won't wait another 4 years and he stands no chance alone against Tinubu without Obi's support base.

Hope they get their acts together and reach a compromise, no opposition can match APC without reaching a consensus on a single presidential candidate.
