Peter Obi's former running mate, Datti declares for president

BREAKING: Datti Declares 2027 Ambition As Labour Party Disowns NEC Meeting By Obi, Otti.

The Labour Party has announced that its Former Vice Presidential Candidate, Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, has declared interest in running for President in 2027.

Rising from a meeting at its National Secretariat in Abuja on Monday, 21st of July, the Chairman, Julius Abure, congratulated Datti for showing interest in contesting for President on the Party’s Platform in 2027.

He also dissociated the party from an NEC meeting held at Transcorp Hotel on Friday, the 18th of July 2025.

The NEC meeting witnessed the Presence of the Party’s Former Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, where it was resolved that Nenadi Usman would function as a factional chairman of the Party.

It's no longer news that the Labour Party is mired in a bitter crisis that has divided it into Two Factions.

The Full Statement signed by Abure and the Party’s National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim read;

RESOLUTION ADOPTED AT THE END OF THE NATIONAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL (NEC) OF LABOUR PARTY HELD ON MONDAY, 21st JULY 2025 AT THE NATIONAL SECRETARIAT, UTAKO, ABUJA, AT 02:00 PM.

The NEC Meeting was attended by members of the National Working Committee, National officers of the party, Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed, Vice Presidential candidate of the 2023 General Election, State Chairmen, and Stakeholders of the party and other co-opted members of the National Executive Council as provided by Article 13 (A) of the Party Constitution.

At the end of the meeting, the following resolutions were approved and adopted;

1. The NEC in session after reviewing the purported NEC meeting held in Transcorp on Friday, the 18th of July 2025, condemned the conveners of the meetings and thereafter dissociated itself from the outcome of the so-called NEC meeting where they renamed their illegal Caretaker Committee set up in Umuahia last year as Interim National Working Committee.

2. NEC notes that no matter how illegality is decorated it can not be legal. Renaming the Caretaker Committee, Interim NWC does not remove its illegality.

3. This sitting contravenes the Party’s Constitution. Article 14 (4) (B) gives powers to call meetings only to the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chairman. The meeting also contravenes the provisions of Section 82 (1) (2) (a) of the Electoral Act 2022 which provides as follows:

82 (1) Every registered political party shall give the Commission at least 21 days’ notice of any Convention, Congress, Conference or meeting convened for the purpose of ‘’merger’’ and electing members of its executive committees, other governing bodies, or nominating candidates for any of the elective offices specified under this Act. Such notice must be given by the National Chairman and Secretary of the Party.

(2) The Commission may, with or without prior notice to the political party attend and observe any convention, congress, conference or meeting which is convened by a political party for the purpose of (a) electing members of its executive committees or other governing bodies.

4. NEC in session consequently disassociates itself from the meeting and its outcomes.

5. NEC in session notes that there is no vacuum in the leadership of the Party. The Party has conducted its National Convention in line with the party Constitution, the Electoral Act and Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 27th March, 2024 at Nnewi, Anambra State, which has been validated by the Supreme Court in its Judgment of the 4th April 2025.

Consequently, NEC in session therefore calls on the Honourable Chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu to comply with the Supreme Court Judgment, all the legal and other opinions before him.

Based on the foregoing, therefore, NEC in session hereby call on all teeming members, supporters, and members of the general public to kindly disregard the so-called meeting and its outcome.

6. NEC in session hereby re-imposes confidence in the leadership of Barr. Julius Abure led the National Working Committee and urged all Party members to continue to respect the leadership of the party and obey its lawful directives.

7. NEC in session also approved the conduct of State, Local Government, and Ward Congress as may be scheduled by the National Working Committee in line with the party’s Constitution and other Extant laws.

8. NEC in session reiterates that the Labour Party will not be part of any coalition for the 2027 general election. NEC believes that the coalition of 2023 is bigger than any other coalition. we will therefore rebuild, reconcile, and consolidate the gains of the 2023 general election. Labour Party is distinct in terms of its ideology, programs, philosophy, and manifestos, which has the answers to the socio-economic challenges in Nigeria. We can therefore not be tempted by joining any politically spent forces that have hitherto, squandered the resources and opportunity of the Nation.

9. NEC in session commends Sen. Datti Baba-Ahmed for identifying with the leadership and declaring his interest in the 2027 general election.

I have said it before and will repeat it again. Gringori will have no other option left at the end of the day but APGA. Only the people of Anambra will vote for him in the next election and Soludo will make sure he doesn't get beyond 100k rigged votes.

Gosh! I don't know who's advising Obi, this was supposed his job. Why will you just jump into a coalition without your backup if things don't go your way. Those Fulanis will just use him for his 6million votes and dump him.

I see ADC winning 22 states + FCT in a free but unfair 2027 election. APC carrying Kano heavily,but losing Lagos and the North in general by slim margins. He will then be heavily beaten in the south.

Datti that could not win his polling booth for LP is the same one Abure is courting. Either Datti is Obi's eye on Abure's faction or he knows PO will not chose him in 2027.
Feelers are that the coalition has decided to offer Obi the ticket, while Atiku chose the running mate. The same model used by APC wherein Buhari got the ticket abd Tinubu asked to chose the running mate.

ADC is a better option for Obi than Labour party. Labour party as currently consistituted cannot win a presidential election in Nigeria.

And again, the Obi's so-called 6 million votes can never win him the presidency, even if he tries ten times. For you to win the presidency, u need a platform with national spread with structures, not just relying on some faceless online Obidients.

If buhari's 12 million votes could not win him the presidency in CPC, so also Obi's 6 million votes can never win him the presidency in LP.
