Jerome Nyameh, a professor and former governorship aspirant under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Taraba state, has resigned from the party after 25 years of membership.

In a resignation letter dated July 18 and addressed to the chairman of the PDP in Zing LGA, Nyameh said his decision to withdraw from the party was based on “wide consultations” and concerns expressed by his supporters across the state’s 168 wards.

“I wish to formally tender my resignation as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Zing AII Ward, Zing Local Government Area of Taraba State, with immediate effect,” the letter reads.

Nyameh noted that he had remained a loyal and devoted member of the PDP since 1999, but recent developments had made it untenable for him to continue.

“Many of my supporters have expressed fear of the unknown and, as a result, urged me out of urgency and concern to withdraw my membership from the party due to the ongoing crisis and divisions that appear unresolved,” he wrote.

Nyameh was a key contender for the PDP ticket ahead of the 2023 election and emerged second behind Kefas Agbu, who later won and is now governor of the state.

At the time, Nyameh had called for unity in the party but also pushed for transparency and inclusion in the build-up to the polls.

In his letter, the academic-turned-politician reaffirmed his commitment to development in the state.

“My commitment to building a better Taraba and a greater nation remains unwavering. The passion and vision I carried while in the PDP will continue to drive me wherever I find myself, by God’s grace,” he said.

Nyameh has not yet announced his next political move or whether he intends to join another party ahead of the 2027 elections.
