More states have announced plans to reduce electricity tariffs in their jurisdictions after the Enugu Electricity Regulatory Commission issued a new tariff order to MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, revising the electricity cost for Band A customers from N209 per kilowatt-hour to N160/kWh, effective August 1, 2025.Source: https://punchng.com/Electricity-Act-fallout-Gencos-Discos-rage-as-states-begin-tariff-cuts

The matter is very simple, roll out prepaid meters massively so that estimated billing which most nepa officials use to line their pockets will be brought to its barest minimum. You have a situation where meters sit in store houses for years but they refuse distribution and gradual payments even with FG directives because of the criminality in that system. Do the right thing and see if your money will not come out |

The worst thing that would happen to any country is to have people who have zero knowledge of how to run a successful business heading sensitive agencies that regulate a critical industry. If the Enugu regulator thinks that the Discos are overbilling the consumers, why not launch your own company and start giving it for free? After all, there was a time in this country when the government had MTel and we knew what later happened to the state-run telco. |

KillahPriest:Discos are hoarding prepaid metres because they use postpaid billings to make up for huge losses they incur through energy losses due obsolete distribution infrastructure and theft from bypassed metres. The bigger problem with today's Discos is that they are mostly owned by politically exposed people and their goons. That's why they are not serious about taking steps to make that business profitable. In summary, prepaid metre cannot totally solve the problem. I have proposed that instead of having one disco for a state or region, it should be further unbundled so that every LGA will have a disco. That way, the owners can properly monitor power distribution to ensure that consumers are paying, they can upgrade obsolete distribution lines and that they have enough returns to buy more energy. |

That's how we make the chance of getting 24 hour electricity even more remote. The states are just copying tinubu subsidy plan for most Nigerians. At the end of the day, it's going to be reduced profits and reduced investment in generation and transmission And we will all be the worse for it. A business runs well when government does not set it's prices. Tinubu and the governor's seem not to get it Make we enjoy our no light. We voted for it ![]() |

KillahPriest:Estimated billing happens because a large percentage of people don't pay for power. So discos essentially rip off some consumers who do pay via estimated billing to survive financially Metering is happening though..my.local disco is rolling out meters well well |

The government must wash their hands completely from Electricity.. it's should be a complete private sector business .. government should only come in as regulators. |

| Re: Electricity Act Fallout: GENCOs, DISCOs Rage As States Begin Tariff Cuts by nairalanda1(m): 6:21am On Jul 22, 2025 |
SmartPolician:Discos want to be profitable, but government does not let them. As it stands, only 20% of customers pay for power at market price. The rest pay below market prices or do not pay at all. That does look lovely don't it.? That impacts profits. Yeah they make one trillion in profit , but it needs to be much more And also we can't attract serious players ie serious electrical companies because who is going to invest in a sector where the government is setting prices. You won't see return on investment at all. You won't make enough to even pay for improved servieses self. But not all discos are or were on wed by politicans. Abuja disco was run by KANN which is a Zimbabwe owned company. Not anymore because years of subsidy forced it to hand over to the banks that run it now. |
| Re: Electricity Act Fallout: GENCOs, DISCOs Rage As States Begin Tariff Cuts by nairalanda1(m): 6:23am On Jul 22, 2025 |
Jayhome24:Under NEPA it was even worse. The only way they can be improvement is if government allows total deregulation and the market setting the price But politicans like tinubu and your governor want to be elected. They don't want to make sane decisions that would help in the long run |

Wahala for the DISCOS ![]() They should massively invest in infrastructure and bring all the Band B, C, D and E to Band A na.. They have also made huge profits from poor citizens from their deliberate failures to provide prepaid meters, transformers e..t.c to their customers in an attempt to continue huge estimated billing system. |

We are earnestly waiting for Ikeja electric! N225 plus per kWh is too much o! I think Ikeja electric has the best coverage in Nigeria covering a large part of Lagos mainland to many parts in Ogun state. We do have electricity almost 24/7 now! You're sure that even when electricity goes off it will be restored within some time. Na we dey switch off appliances now! |

Is it that no one here read what the post was all about? All that Enugu Board said was that; "Sirs, you are charging N200+ which covers your basic costs. But you are also still being paid through subsidies." But the Gencos & Discos are saying; "But the subsidies have not been paid for years". Enugu Board now said; "But it will be paid. If you are still expecting it, you shouldn't be charging it at all." Gencos & Discos? "People, come ooo. I won't supply you anymore". The truth is that the current system collects enough money from the people already but their massive profits is from the N5tr subsidies they are being promised but not paid yet. But they don't deserve. That's where the racket is. My people, you are already paying for what you use right now!! Know this and know peace. |

EERC needs to be encouraged for coming out to speak in the interest of Enugu people and I think this should force Genco’s and Disco’s to be live and up rather than rip consumers of their hard end money with their outdated electricity infrastructure. Many people here don’t even know that consumers contribute money to fix electric issues whenever there’s challenges in their locality which is not supposed to be. Genco’s and Disco’s excess needs to be checkmated at all time and I support EERC for taking the bold action |

Enugu State has really taken a bold step, with the band A billing an household spends minimum of 40k in a month to have light, Children school fees, feeding, transportation to school, work and other household expenses. With the so called minimum wage, people are really suffering. NLC need to learn from this and negotiate better when it is time for the next wage review. |

The FG is the one owing 5 trillion. How on earth do they expect they can collect 5 trillion from us? Diminishing returns is taking its toll on the economy already. The 1% is cashing out, unconcerned about the masses who are left behind. Maybe the madness in the power sector should be allowed to play out: let them make everyone to be paying 800k per month for darkness, for a month and see how we will throw the wires on the ground and apply for disconnection. RUBBISH! |
