Some idiots up are sounding like bots as usual. The idea of renaming institutions of learning after politician should be discouraged in all totality. This can cause some sort of constraints for alumni outside the country or elsewhere and this stupid practice is mainly carried out here, mit and other big institutions would have been changed hundreds of time if it was here .
If you must name or honor anyone just build a new school or whatever n not renaming existing ones.
Sikiru Adetona was not a politician he was a king

Even if this were true, does it mean those who named the college or university after him didn't know there was one to his name already?

These government officials are useless people. The build nothing and have named existing infrastructures after their friends and benefactors.

Now, there is nothing to name anymore than remain old institutions. The way these useless government officials are targeting educational institutions is even more alarming. Institutions are brands in themselves. How will you just wake up and rename a tertiary institution especially without consulting?
Exactly what i am complaining about. That thing doesn't make sense at all. These institutions issue certificates to thousands of people yearly, and millions of people already have the name of those schools in their certificates. Imagine waking up and discovering that your prestigious university e g UNIMAID had been renamed to Buhari university. It is almost as if your school does not exist anymore as it has been changed to something else by one person that woke up and wished to change the name as he wants just because he has the power to do so. That is pathetic.

They should name non certificate issuing institutions or places after these people, by that one no body will complain E.g roads, stadiums, conference centers, or even airports are manageable too because airport doesn't give people certificate.

Imagine one person certificate carry Tai Solarin, another person own na Sikiru, and na the same school. Is that not confusion. Universities should only be renamed after a widespread consultation and only when it is very very necessary to do so.

Ignorance will destroy many Nigerian youths. I read through the post yesterday and was almost in tears. They argue on what they know nothing about. Gosh
I do not support renaming of our institutions anyhow, but Tai solarin has two institutions with his name, one has to go. The level of ignorance guided by bigotry on the original post yesterday is unimaginable m
You could say we're ignorant for not knowing that there were 2 institutions bearing Tai Solarin's name, but it's understandable to get confused. You yourself check it - who wouldn't get confused hearing that 2 institutions in the same state are named after one man?
Re: The Difference Between Tai Solarin College Of Education And TASUED by naptu2(op): 7:38am On Jul 22, 2025
People don't read.

One person is asking if those that named Tai Solarin College of Education did not know that there was already an institution with that name.

Which came first, the university or the college?

Anyway, the controversy is exactly the reason that I didn't complain. Having 2 institutions with very similar names would confuse people, so I understand why the college was renamed.

I wrote this yesterday.

The current outrage.

I was about to complain, then I remembered that there were two. Many people are complaining right now, but I'm willing to bet that they don't know that there are two.

Two what?

The Ogun State College of Education was established in 1978. Its name was changed to Tai Solarin College of Education (TASCE) in 1994 after the death of the great educationist.

Governor Dapo Abiodun renamed it again and it is now known as the Sikiru Adetona College of Science and Technology, in honour of the late Awujale of Ijebu.

That's why some people are up in arms. Dr Tai Solarin was an atheist and his religion was education. His dream was for every Nigerian child to be able to get top quality education. Critics say that Dr Solarin's name is being erased and that he did more for education in Nigeria than Oba Adetona.

But wait a minute, I said that I was about to complain, but I didn't anymore. Why?

That's because the Ogun State Government established the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in 2005. It is a separate institution and it still bears that name. The university was taken over by the Federal Government early this year.

Basically there were 2 higher educational institutions in Ogun State that were named after Tai Solarin and one of them has been named after Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Are they the same?

1) This is Tai Solarin University of Education.

https://tasued.edu.ng/

2) This is the former Tai Solarin College of Education, now known as Sikiru Adetona College of Education.

https://tasce.edu.ng/site/about/

Note: As the governor said, the college was renamed while the Awujale was still alive.

Good clarification.
But which one will they name after Prof Wole Soyinka when he dies?

Look at Poly Ibadan. These politicians have gone out of their minds. The Polytechnic Ibadan so much prides itself with that name that it has become a brand. Makinde woke and and says it will now be Olunloyo. I hear the names of some schools now and I wonder if it's a bakery or biscuit company.

Every week, they are now renaming one tertiary institution or the other.

It is non Ogun indegenes that are crying over what they know nothing about
That is always the case with any news involving government.

People who are not from the said State or place tend to cry more than the bereaved and pass judgement swiftly.

In some cases, the thought to be bereaved is rather celebrating life.

They should channel the energy in renaming other institution or monument after individuals and leave our tertiary institutions alone

The grievance people have is "why erase someone's name to put another person's name?" Why not maintain status quo and get another institution to rename?
By the way I am personally not bothered about what bears whose name, I don't know what that does to someone who is already dead, rottening in the grave.

Thanks for the update. I personally used to think that it was the college of education that was upgraded to the university
The college of education was upgraded into a university.

However, the Ogun State Government wanted it to be both a university and a college of education. The National Commission for Colleges of Education refused because it didn't want the college of education to be subordinate to a university.

So it was split in two in 2008.

This created confusion because there was a university and a college of education with the same name.

In 2021 the Ogun State Government changed the name of the college of education to Sikiru Adetona College of Education. As I said, it was changed when the Awujale was alive.

Don’t mind some fools who are supporting that nonsense that Gov of ogun state did. Ask them if it was there family name would they also accept or be happy… the problem is many of our Nigerians feel so greedy.

I also tried to explained this yo noise maker in my other social platform but they couldn't understand because many f them aw heavenly cursed never to reason before talking allow hatred to ruined their mental status simply it is Tinubu is the president but almost all Rederal institution in their region were named after the indigenous yet they didn't complain about that but were so busy and angry about Markurdi Uni and Tai Solarin.

Many of them are not even educated, imagine a boy serving master, ola boy seling ice cream by traffic etc now the one arguing about Markurdi and Ogun state matter.

The name has be change whoever not please with it can go to court.

Let me now burst their head again this morning "two particular states in Nigeria one from SW one from the North has finalised a new law to revoked the right of ownership of any land bought by strangers the state now can take the land back because you only bought the land does not mean you owned it 100% and I'm happy about the plan to stop all my fellow ingrate invaders thinking buying a land give them the right to be disrespectful and claiming ownership of people ancestral land. It is coming I swear what obi and his headless bitch over 2023 election defiancy will cause for igbo and cost for igbo people will be too harsh to bear. More is loading...keep watching una go hear word by force.

The controversy arose because people did not actually listen to what the governor said. What did he say?

The governor thanked President Tinubu for agreeing to take over TASUED (that is, the Federal Government took over the university from the Ogun State Government). He then thanked God that they were able to show appreciation to the Awujale while he was alive by renaming the Tai Solarin College of Education after him (that was done in 2021).

It still doesn't detract from the fact that another government institution or building could have been used to immortalize the Awujale. Was an error made in naming it after Tai Solarin in the first place?
There are always two sides to a coin undecided undecided
Just imagine, a government coming and renaming some of the institutions already named after other persons, there'll be uproar now or won't there be huh huh
Are you from Ogun?
I'm certain that you are not.

There are no issues.

The Senate is complicit, and even if they were not, it's the president who will sign the bill. It's a tragedy.

The person in question already has two different institutions named after him in the same state.
So if not for ignorance and stewpeedity the right question should have been, "Why name 2 different institutions after one person in the same state"

Majority of you didn't even watch the video to listen to the governor (a failure in governance though). He clearly mentioned Tai solarin college of education and not university of education. An open minded individual will open Google to confirm if there's a college of education. But some felt they wanted to eradicate Solarin's legacy. Noo na

Nigerian leaders, I don't know if they don't think or something. Why always renaming universities polytechnics and college of educations that are certificate issuing institutions. This is not too good. These places are historical sites and institutions where these names are part of their identity.

They cause confusion and erase the prestige of these schools. See Harvard (which was named since 1639 i.e almost 400 years ago), imagine one person just wake up and change its name to anything he likes. Or University of Oxford (which is about 929 years old). The names are their identity and prestige, and thousands of people pass through these schools each year. The government should stop causing a disturbance in the naming of institutions that issues certificate to thousands of people.

Imagine one person's certificate will carry Tai Solarin, another person's own will carry Sikiru all from same school. Na so Tinubu wake up change the prestigious name of UNIMAID to Buhari university. Unimaid that was one of the most prestigious schools in the North, now them don kpai that school through the name change because if you tell someone say you are from Muhammadu Buhari university, they will be confused and ask you, what school is that?
All the universities you have referred to above such as Harvard and Oxford are not state or government universities. As far as I know, no private uni in Nigeria has ever been renamed. Any public university can be renamed. International Private universities however can open up specialised institutions or faculties to donors.

If the uni brand is strong it won't matter. University of Ife is also Obafemi Awolowo University but the name change has not affected its reputation or its performance.

It will simply be called MBU - University of Maiduguri. The two names can co exist.
Re: The Difference Between Tai Solarin College Of Education And TASUED by Chegesnd: 3:47pm On Jul 22, 2025
... but what's this madness?
The same institution, those who hold the certificate around 1978, it bears Ogun State College of Education, from 1994 those who have the certificate it bears Tai Solarin College of Education, from this year on, the certificates will Sikiru Adetona College of Education.
Be sure, in the future another name change must happen, the trend is there.
Politicians have destroyed everything.
