Oyo Spends N2.1bn On Transport Subsidy For 5.88 Million Passengers by Politicstoday(op): 9:28am On Jul 22, 2025
Oyo spends N2.1bn on transport subsidy for 5.88 million passengers

The Chairman/Sole Administrator of the Pacesetter Transport Services, Dr Ibrahim Dikko, said on Monday that the Oyo State government has subsidised transport fare for 5,880,000 passengers under the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery between January and July 2025.

He added that under the SAfER Transport, an initiative introduced by the governor to mitigate the economic hardship facing residents of the state, students, pensioners, the aged, people living with disabilities and other residents enjoy subsidised transportation in the state-owned Pacesetter Buses on different intra-city and inter-city routes.

Dikko, who spoke while briefing newsmen at the Governor’s Office Briefing Room, said that the Pacesetter Transport Services was able to commute 9,950,000 passengers in 2024.

He noted that the state government has committed a total of N2.1 billion towards subsidising transport cost across Ibadan and other inter-city routes such as Ibadan-Iseyin-Saki route, Ibadan-Oyo-Ogbomoso route and Ibadan-Ibarapa route.

He said: “Since August 5th, 2023, when Governor ‘Seyi Makinde announced SAfER, till date, the state government has spent N2,151,000,000 to subsidise transportation for the people.

“Between August 5th and December 2023, the governor invested N541 million in subsidising transport fare by 50 per cent for residents of the state. We commuted between 26,000 and 30,000 people on a daily basis in 2023.

“In 2024, the governor invested N924 million and we commuted over 9,950,000 people in 2024.

“This year, as we speak, the governor has invested N686 million and so far, from January to date, we have commuted about 5,880,000 passengers.

“The public needs to know what the governor has been doing to put all those buses back on the road and to ensure that life is easier for residents of the state.”

The PTS chairman hailed Governor Makinde for transforming and reforming the transport company, which had become moribund prior to his assumption of office in 2019, noting that the PTS has experienced growth since he was appointed as the Chairman/Sole Administrator of the Company in July 2023.

According to him, apart from recording an increase in the number of functioning vehicles and routes, paying pensions/gratuities and also restructuring of the workforce for better service delivery to the masses, the company has introduced several innovations including digital payment system and installation of Closed Circuit TV cameras and trackers in the vehicles.

He noted that the Services currently run 39 intra-city routes with 55 buses as well as five inter-city routes with 10 buses.

Dikko stated that upon his assumption of office in 2023, the PTS revived 30 buses and deployed the same within Ibadan metropolis, while it deployed another 16 buses to the intercity routes, with a total of 46 buses deployed for the SAfER Transport.

He added that he was also able to reduce revenue leakage, siphoning of diesel, and diversion of routes by drivers as well as speed control, while the Services also went digital on September 24, 2023, by introducing the card payment system.

Be like say something dey worry you. Before Tinubu wè had "Ajumose". A subsided public transport system established by late Gov Abiola Ajimobi. The buses are still on the road

Seyi came in 2019 added more to them. More modern. Took it a notch higher by building four modern terminals. Ojo and challenge. Both commissioned in 2022 with two at Iwo road that is already completed and ready for commissing.

So how has this got to with yeye Tinubu?

Oyo state is not the only state doing what you're talking about under Ajimobi, but the scale now compared to back then, the difference is clear. Governors are comfortably paying salary and allowance, comfortably paying debt and comfortably building infrastructure.

Another Yeye smelling talk. Govornor's have been paying salaries and doing basic infrastructure before Tinubu came in. It has nothing to do with Tinubu but the individual Govornor on seat.

Guess it is Tinubu no wonder Ogun state has the worst infrastructure in the SW and teachers are currently on strike. Or other States that havent been able to even pay the new minimum wage.

You first said it is Tinubu that made Oyo to subside transport system. I showed you that it has already been in place and working before Tinubu but like a paid data boy that you are,you are still beating around the Bush

first, did you personally see the 5.8million passengers?

second, what is the wisdom in removing fuel subsidy and sharing the money for governors to pay transport subsidy?

who created the suffering that you say the governors should ameliorate?

is this investment in "cheap quality education and health care so people wont have to go spend huge amounts in private institutions thereby freeing up disposable income for many families" not the same thing as paying subsidy?

what is the wisdom in "removing" fuel subsidy cos you say it is not sustainable (even though it kept prices down) only to share money for governors to provide the same susbsidies?

Be there desperately trying to attribute anything you see to tinubu........
..if government are all doing well like u claimed...why is Ogun state government struggling to pay pension to its workers under tinubu? Workers are currently in strike for non remittance of their pension....

No be everything una go dey use score political cheap point?? If the president is doing well..the citizens will know and they will praise him

Pls the sole responsibility of the President is to laise with Dangote and reduce the fuel pump price, reconstruction of federal decaying roads and maintaining the ones still intact...

Find ways to tackle electricity and food inflation prices then create Maximum Security ...
Use Statistical measures to know who is a migrant in Nigeria, how to handle such person, create employment for the citizens and even pay the unemployed....

Create a working system and now slogans and Agbero replies....

Don't tell us about Tinubu and Governors....we don't want to know , the Governors are doing their works so let the Federal Government do same..

Same Oyo state where I dey?

Who are the beneficiary of the purported subsidy?

FG gave Oyo state & other states CNG buses which the government use for Lagos - Ibadan transport business

Ticket from Lagos to Ibadan is 3500naira with CNG buses given to us free of charge by the FG. Let's assume the bus consume 5k naira worth of CNG and it's 14 seater bus so it means the state spent 5k on VNH whilst passenger paid total of 49k. We can't spent 44k on vehicle maintenance and driver wages just for a trip.

I'm still waiting or the subsidy but maybe Ibadan to Ogbomosho & that one na replica of old mass transit bus bought by late ajimobi and na one trip per day last time I checked even the price is not that cheap (I think around 1k lesser than 14 seater bus whereas the bus is powered by diesel)

God have mercy upon us

Better don't talk too much before he hits back at you with unprintable names and hauls insults at you. Anyone who doesn't join them in supporting the worst administration in history and their leader is either seen as an omo ale or Igbo. They're part of the the problems of Nigeria today.

Like followers like mentor. Tinubu said same in lagos, that he's the master planner of the modern lagos grin. That word alone angered us and why we didn't support him in 2023. If you want to vie for a political office, don't say what's not real. Before tinubu came, we had LSTC similar to BRT by pa jakande. We didn't thin our roads because of this. Most of those buses were different, longer, more durable and wider than his brt buses. What he simply did was add to them in the name of brt and collapsed our roads.

No governor in Nigeria or a federal minister of works had neared pa jakande in performance till date and the man didn't brag over it. The one time largest housing estate in africa called Gwarinpa in Abuja was his work. He replicated the housing scheme in lagos at the federal level.

Maybe all these GenZ who are too.lazy to learn should be enrolled in history classes. You shouldn't have responded to happney65 in the first place.
