When I went for a hair cut yesterday evening, I saw the burial poster of a young woman on the entrance iron lock door of the shop near the barbing shop.

I went through the burial poster and discovered that she died at the age of 40.I was inquisitive and asked the barber what happened to her and he told me she was the person that had the shop the burial poster is and she had Sickle Cell and died from it's crisis.

She died behind leaving her husband with 4 kids.
I was completely broken with what she might have passed through in life.
So so sad.
I pray light guides her home .
May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Reminds me of a boy who was my friend. He actually made me his friend because he was just a boy. He liked me so much and always told me he is my friend, which people laughed over it.

He died at 20 from the same predicament.

I agree with this. They should also criminalise dwarf getting married. If dwarf must get married they should go for artificial insemination. Where the sperm of another person who doesn't suffer dwarfism should be used for impregnation.

What's particularly troubling is the mystery surrounding diseases that primarily affect Black populations - yet there is no investment in quality research to find cures or better treatments for these conditions.

An old classmate then died of it at the age of 7 or so. Also, a few months back, a former student of mine died of it just after completing secondary school.

Who to blame, parents and National Orientation Agency (they are doing a good job o but is needed).

No, some of them actually reach their 70s and older. The oldest woman with sickle cell in Nigeria's history died in 2020 at the age of 95. When I was in medical school, one of the oldest Professors of Medicine in the university I attended is a sickle-celler. And he was approaching 70 years at that time.

Truth is, the severity varies from individual to individual. Some will start having crisis from less than 1 year of age, while others won't even have any crisis until much later. Yes, most don't grow beyond age 30-40. But a few grow far beyond that bracket.

So, it's very possible that Adekunle Gold is truly SS.

Very terrible disease, a friend once tried to explain crisis pain.

She said imagine someone putting boiling rubber in your joints simultaneously with fire.

I wept for her.

I always have a very weak spot for her.

This reminds me of my beloved friend at Wesley High School, Oturkpo- Benue State Master Ogbole Ichapa that the cold hand of death snatched from us as a result of sickle cell complications. Master Ogbole continue to rest with the Lord.

Na lie bro, I don see plenty SS wey pass 40....though most dey die early but I've seen quite a lot.... I have more than 3 friends I know from birth that are SS and over 30,they are still alive... Jst occasional crises.... And they know how to manage themselves.... Dem no dey play rough play from small... Teacher must not beat dem sef in secondary sch

Nonetheless, it's not by mouth, man. Many people's replies when you ask them how they knew they are AA is usually something like, "My mother said all of us are AA", or "We don't usually fall sick in my family", or "I do have malaria a lot." All these are grossly unreliable.

To be on the safe side, ask her to go for a repeat at a good lab. May you not fall asleep on a bicycle, my brother.

She actually had 4 biological children as a sickler herself? That's some great medical feat what with the attendant huge blood loss during child delivery.

My aunty died last month too. She's sickle cell. Leaving her three kids behind. I believe there will be cure soon.
