So I have been thinking lately. Getting jobs has become extremely difficult in Nigeria these days, especially if you have no connection.

In a bid to grab the attention of the employer or HR manager, you take your time to create a compelling CV and mind-blowing cover letter.

If you genuinely want to get the attention of good companies, you know that one CV or cover letter template can't serve many companies. You take your time and energy to perfect your CV and cover letter to suit the JD.

Yet, the recruiter doesn't even bother getting back to you. It's even better to receive a regret email so you can move on but after applying for the job, they don't even tell you whether you are qualified to proceed to the next stage or not. You are just ghosted. Surprisingly, big organisations like OPEC, MTN,NGOs. etc even do that.

So, if you have worked as HR personnel, I want to understand the reason why companies don't bother getting back to applicants after the first application. Even if the applications were many, you can extract the email addresses and send one regret email to all.

I totally get your frustration! 😩 It can be super disheartening when you put in effort to tailor your CV and cover letter, only to be ghosted by recruiters. From an HR perspective, here are some reasons why companies might not get back to applicants after the initial application:

Reasons for Not Responding
1. High Volume of Applications: Big organizations like OPEC, MTN, and NGOs often receive tons of applications for each job opening. Responding to each one individually can be overwhelming and time-consuming.
2. Automated Recruitment Systems: Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that filter out candidates based on keywords and criteria. If your application doesn't pass the ATS filter, you might not get a response.
3. Resource Constraints: Smaller HR teams or companies might not have the bandwidth to respond to every applicant personally hence the reason the use consultant or google form to weed out applicants.
4. Policy of Only Responding to Shortlisted Candidates: Some companies have a policy of only communicating with candidates who have been shortlisted for further stages, which can lead to silence for other applicants.

Sending Regret Emails
You're right that sending a bulk regret email to applicants who weren't selected could be a considerate approach. Some companies do adopt this practice to maintain a positive employer brand and provide closure to applicants.
