If you grew up in Nigeria or anywhere in West Africa, chances are you’ve seen someone prepare Agbo. That dark, bitter herbal mixture boiling over a fire, with a smell so strong it could slap the flu out of you. This same agbo can function as Jedi for “man power,” 'Agbo Iba' for malaria, or 'Agbo Aran' for infections. There’s always a concoction for something. It’s a cultural remedy passed down from generations, often trusted more than modern drugs.

But here’s the big question is Agbo safe to use?

Let’s not act like we haven’t heard the stories. Someone takes 'Agbo' and feels brand new the next morning. They swear by it. They even start recommending it to friends, family, and colleagues. Some people will tell you they’ve stopped going to hospitals altogether because “Agbo dey work pass drugs.”

But what about the other stories, the ones we don’t always hear or talk about?
The man who started peeing blood after taking a particular herbal mixture.
The woman whose kidney gave up from prolonged use.
The child who passed out from a wrong dosage.

See, here’s the issue: Agbo is unregulated.

We don’t always know what’s inside. Some sellers mix over 20 herbs with alcohol, roots, bark, even antibiotics, and they don’t measure anything. It’s all vibes and bitterness. And to them, the more bitter, the more effective. But that’s not how science works.

The human body is not a dumping ground.
Liver, kidney, and other vital organs are not firewood.
They can only process so much before they start giving up.

Yet, some people believe 'Agbo' is "natural," and therefore harmless. But let’s not forget, poison is also natural. Even snake venom is natural. Natural doesn’t always mean safe.

To be fair, not all 'Agbo' is bad.
Some herbs have real medicinal value. Many modern drugs were originally derived from herbs. But the difference is modern drugs go through testing, research, and standardization. 'Agbo' often doesn’t.

So yes, this is a debatable topic.

Do we throw 'Agbo' away completely? Maybe not. But should we be more cautious? Absolutely.

If you must take 'Agbo':

Know your source. Don’t buy just because someone looks confident.

Avoid alcohol-based mixtures, especially if you have liver or kidney issues.

Don’t mix it with other medications without speaking to a healthcare professional.

Take breaks. Constant use without medical supervision is risky.

Watch out for symptoms. If you start reacting, stop immediately.

In the end, health is personal.
But ignorance is dangerous.
And we need to start having these honest conversations.

Just because something has been around for a long time doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Let’s stop treating our health with trial and error.

'Agbo' might cure, but it might also harm. Choose wisely.
I take Agbo once in a while and sometimes prepare them myself. I think the issue borders on research. Some local herbs mixed in the Agbo concoction are really poisonous plants. So knowledge is needed. Besides na God dey protect person. For me mixing a combination of lemon grass, mango leaves, paw paw leaves and guava leaves(when available) is the best Agbo for malaria fever.

They actually add morphine or opium to it hence it's addictive properties. Aside that all our Pharmaceutical drugs have a measure of either Cocaine, CBD (Canabis), Opium. in small doses which is why you get addicted when you take them too much. All pain relieving drugs, Cough syrups and multivitamins.
I know because I take multivitamins and I've checked the contents of one such brand and discovered CBD in it.
Note: CBD induces a very serious hunger when consumed.

But our forefathers used it & lived for 140 years. We use beer & struggle with 75 years. What went wrong?

Hmmm.... Who's underestimating our agbo here.
Look here guys. By September I will be 45, I can confidently tell anyone who cares to listen that since the age of 6,7,8 upwards that I knew myself I have never been to hospital all my life till now. And what's the remedy "agbo".
I'm an Igbo guy both parents but born and brought up in Lagos. My mum don't joke with "agbo", when we were kids she always force us and we are used to it.
Though my younger ones have been in and out of hospital every now and then bcus after they knew theirselves, they started hating agbo bcus of its bitterness.
.
Me too I stopped at some time bcus of its bitter nature until when I was in Benin City I started having syptoms of pile bcus of my too much in take of sugar. My anus always pains and feel pepperish anytime I use the toilet.
When I told my mum who was still in Lagos then, she ordered me to travel to Lagos and after she cooked better agbo Jedi for me. It took only 3 days for it to stop.
This was in 2006, from then till now I haven't stopped taking agbo Jedi and iba and I must confess nobody eats sugar more than me honestly.
Abeg make una no use "agbo" play o!

Thanks for this thread.
I'm looking to open a thread, I've never done it before, on how well our forefathers lived. Many will claim they lived to 150 years with five wives and lived peacefully. But many are unaware that life and health improved in many ways, since the past fifty years.

The fact that our forebears took it doesn't mean it always worked or magically imbued them with immortality. They still died quicker and younger than later generations. My take.

As for the agbo, I've only had it twice and don't plan to again. It didn't work for the first health issue but the second time was for malaria and I can say that it did work - only I had to pee through the night.

Re: Is Agbo Safe To Use? by Helpout12345: 8:29pm On Jul 22, 2025
You people should keep deceiving yourself.

If herbal medicine is not safe, our forefathers will all have died before we are here. And someone like me and many other Nigerians might not be around today.

Even western medicine, are they safe?? Come to America and listen to medicine advertisement, the side effects alone is enough for you to run away from their medicines. Apart from the fact that western medicine hardly cure any disease. They only produce maintenance medicine with tons of side effects.

What we need is to modernize it, regulate it, and not outrightly condemn it.
Re: Is Agbo Safe To Use? by Helpout12345: 8:36pm On Jul 22, 2025
I know Nigerians don't appreciate what they have locally.

We have brainwashingly believed foreign is always better than locals.

We better wake up. This is 2025. Very soon, China will come and repackage those agbo for you people and you will be buying them emass.

A friend's dad was given agbo after complaining of back pain, after 2 days he started complaining of stomach pain, he took more agbo because he was in the village.

He came back to Lagos and landed at St Nicholas hospital, he was diagnosed of peptic ulcer.
Re: Is Agbo Safe To Use? by fredwill1357(m): 9:11pm On Jul 22, 2025
Agbo can be very unsafe, you cannot say for sure the ingredients it contains and the quantities.
If you want to treat or prevent diseases with herbs and natural means. Look up the illnesses you want to treat or prevent and the herbs that work on them and use them in safe dosages.
Some herbs like ginger, oregano, thyme can be added to meals everyday safely. Try not to exceed 5mg a day.
Bye bye to malaria, typhoid, coughs, etc.

CBD is a canabinoid in Canabis. It's very beneficial and does make you hungry when taken in excess. Otherwise it only makes you eat more when you had a case of nausea before taking it. The oil are sold at stores. They are CBD oil.

Any drug that comes without proper prescription on how and when to take it and no expiry date isn't good for your health.
There is a Yoruba Actor (I think it is Fadeyi Oloro) whose daughter said after his death that the doctors told her that her Dads insides (intestines) had been severely damaged by his heavy consumption of Agbo. he is not the only one I suspect in the Yoruba Nollywood that died of kidney failure through over consumption of Agbo.

A lot of the unexplained deaths in Naija in my own opinion are possibly due to kidney cum liver failure caused by prolonged intake of Agbo the source or purity / contents of which the drinker did not pause to research themselves.

At best you don't know the purity or source of the water used for mixing the Agbo and some of the hawkers just look for a free cheap source of water to mix the agbo even if it is from a broken pipe that is passing through a gutter that has dried up and for this singular reason, i refuse to take any Agbo purchased outside although during Covid I went to the market to buy ingredients and make my own Agbo at home when I suspected that I had malaria from a visit to Naija and the UK hospitals were only treating Covid cases but even at that like you said, anything without dosage or expiry date is bad for you.

Its similar to the reason you can not really lose weight eating African food because there is no way you can accurately measure the calorie content in our food and hence you consistently go over the daily 2,000 calorie limit whereas Oyinbo food like sandwich clearly has the calorie count written on the pack and if you eat 3 sandwiches of 400 calories a day that equals 1,200 calories which is well below the 2,000 daily RDA.

A lot of people drinking Agbo do not realise that everything you put into your mouth ends up going through your 1 liver and 2 kidneys and if you are not sure of the purity, strength and safety of the ingredients of the Agbo, its better to stay off. There is one weight loss drink that a lot of Nigerians currently drink called Jinja but when I researched its active ingredients, some of the plants are quite poisonous.

Similarly, a container of "man power" liquid entering Germany was stopped by border officials and tested and found to have more than 10 times the recommended amount of Viagra mixed into each plastic bottle and disguised as herbal "man power". Na so one Baba with a weak heart go go drink am hoping to show his prowess on the bed and he will end up kicking the bucket due to heart attack from the overdose of Viagra in the supposedly 100% herbal mixture.

One has to be careful what one puts in ones system. My own rule is that if I don't know or am not sure what is inside something, I will not put it into my mouth.

Even if they mix it with cocaine, it is tested, researched and standards are apply to it. That is the moral lesson of this thread.

Agbo does not follow standard or policy processes. Even if its natural, you still need the right dosage.

You need to read the article again!

PS- if at all you want to be taking agbo or native drugs, buy or collect the leaves yourself and mix or cook it yourself. Because you will know the ingredients involved and follow good hygiene and protocols while making, because you are the one preparing it.

Stop buying from all those street vendors, you don't know what is inside!

As absurd as it sounds, yes it'll cure your fever by making you urinate and sweat out the fever. I've tried it about twice. Ask any Agbo expert. They'll confirm it. It's bitter but the aromatic smell of the lemon grass will almost make you wanna sip it as soon as you take it off the fire until the bitterness hits you. Never mind that. Once you're done, that fever will break as you'll sweat and then urinate. It's potency is set for like four boilings. After that you must throw away the herbs and prepare another one or wait for your health to normalize by switching to multivitamins like Vitamin C, Ferrous and B complex tablets. You can add cod liver oil as well.

To see an agbo seller that is fresh is by connection.

If agbo was truly working, why can't they use it to look healthier. Why are they always shriveled, hagard and looking like they're carrying burdens.
