How I Almost Slept In The Cold At Istanbul Airport – 5 Lessons For First-time Tr by Ogamotto(op): 9:48pm On Jul 22, 2025
I still remember the night. My phone was 7% battery, my power bank was dead, and I couldn’t find WiFi.
Worst part? I had just arrived in Turkey — no SIM card, no hotel booked — and the cold at Istanbul airport slapped me like backhand from Sango. 💀

I was wearing vibes and one fine sweater, thinking I was stylish. I didn't know this airport locks out non-passengers at night.
Long story short, I almost became an overnight motivational speaker on the airport floor. 😭

If you’re a first-time traveller (especially from Nigeria), here are 5 hard lessons I wish someone told me:

---

1. Never Land Without Offline Backup
Don’t depend on airport WiFi. Download your maps, hotel address, embassy contacts, and confirmation emails before flying.
The “I go find am there” mentality will disgrace you internationally.

---

2. Airport Is Not Your Friend
Some airports literally lock their terminals at night for non-passengers.
If you think you can “just chill” overnight at the airport — na trap. You go see your true self.

---

3. Dress for Survival, Not Instagram
No one cares about your airport fashion if your bones are vibrating.
Travel smart. Layer up. Even if it’s summer here, check the weather over there.

---

4. Ask Questions Before You Fly
A lot of Nigerians dey form “I sabi.”
Ask someone who has been there before. The right info can save you from overspending, getting stranded, or embarrassing situations.

---

5. Don’t Trust TikTok Alone
TikTok will show you vibes, aesthetics, and fine filters.
Real travel is not always cute. Ask for survival tips, airport tricks, local laws. You no go hear dem for Reels.

---

I no be travel agent. I just nearly froze abroad and I’m here to warn my fellow Nigerians.
Na so one man even tell me for Istanbul:
“You think say na Lagos you dey?”

If you’ve ever had a travel scare or airport wahala, drop your story.
Let’s help the next person avoid this kind of gbas gbos. 🌍

What is the difference between passenger and non passenger, are you not a passenger on the plane

Never been overseas

But interstate travel, I once slept in a Basha in Omuaran, on my way to ilorin

Long story but there was no hotel in sight and it was freezing cold with a lot of mosquitoes

Another time I was stranded at Peace Mass transit, Samonda, Ibadan

They actually collected accommodation fee from me and my babe that was travelling east, when it was time to sleep, the room was filled with a variety of people

We had to sleep inside a bus but the mosquitoes mehn

Two days later I couldn't get up from bed, I almost died

This your story na real Nigerian travel horror movie. We dey always underestimate transport terminals and night travel till e humble us.

I dey even reason say make I start compiling travel “red zones” and survival tactics based on these wahalas. Make person no dey repeat another man’s mistake.

Flights get delayed. Buses break down. Immigration lines long like Monday morning queues.
Always carry your toothbrush, hoodie, snacks, and a working power bank inside your carry-on bag — not in your main luggage. You might be a walking lesson before you reach hotel.
