Xristars: Oblongata:It's a night adder not a gaboon viper. Attached is what a gaboon viper looks like. Notice the rectangle lined pattern on its back and large triangular head. And it's much fatter than a night adder. The only similarities is that they're both spices of viper and extremely venomous.

PulaPower:I stayed in a compound some years ago, we only had two trees, one short bitter leave and a coconut tree. No bush or grass or trees close by. Until one day we found a peeled skin of a snake. I wondered where it came from. Not too long at night, my neighbour killed a tiny snake. Since there was no bush around us, common sense told us that the parent reside in that compound and the only suspected place was the coconut tree. We brought in aboki to climb and investigate only to found two big snakes living on the tree. It was drama that day the aboki nearly fall, we had to called in expert and cut down the coconut tree before killing both snakes. ![]() They must have lived there for many years.. I presumed they sneaked out at night to eat rodent and return up there. |

Saw-scaled viper, one of the most dangerous snakes in Africa. It has dark, irregular spots or blotches along the back. It has a short, thick body for its length. Its head is lightly triangular and broader than the neck. It is known for its defensive posture, forming a loop and making a rasping “sizzling” sound by rubbing its scales together. It’s venomous and responsible for a significant number of snakebite fatalities in rural West Africa. It is active at night and often found in dry, rocky, or savanna areas. |

It's leaning towards an adder. However you could mistake them for gaboon vipers. one thing I love about snake threads is that I always have something to learn. Someone mentioned rhombic night adder which I've not heard before, would look it up |

illicit:Snakes have different names due to several factors, including regional variations in common names, scientific naming conventions, and the use of descriptive names based on physical characteristics or behavior. Scientific names, in particular, are used to avoid confusion and ensure accurate identification, especially when dealing with snakes that may have multiple common names or varying appearances. |
