Hello bros. Please my younger brother got a 67.5 aggregate score this year, which isn’t enough for Computer Science, his first choice. Now he has to choose from these courses: Cyber Security, Biochemistry, Information Technology, Mining Engineering, or Software Development. Which of these has the best future prospects? He’s 16 and applied to FUTA. I’m an art student, so I’m not familiar with these fields. Please focus only on the listed courses.

seanwilliam:Software Development has the best future prospects among the listed fields due to its broad applicability, high demand, and rapid growth across industries. It’s versatile, fuels innovation across all sectors (including cybersecurity and biotech), and offers strong earning potential and flexibility. Skills are transferable globally, and demand spans startups to tech giants. More so, a software developer does not necessarily need to attend university to succeed in the field. The tech industry increasingly values skills over credentials. Companies like Google, Apple, and IBM have dropped degree requirements for many roles. A degree can help, especially for competitive roles, but it’s not mandatory. GRACEGLORY: |

Software Development still looks okay, assuming they really have an excellent curriculum in the school - if all they will be doing is teaching antiquated technologies, then he should just: 1. Take the exam again and target a higher score for Computer Science - Software Development as a degree is still not as "worshipped" as Comp Sci - even though the curriculum is trash in most Nigerian Unis. 2. Go for Cybersecurity, also study for Certifications and self-study for Ethical Hacking. More importantly, ask around for current students in these departments for honest reviews about how good their department really is, in substance - not name. In the end, it's what he learns on his own that will help him stand out - not really a certificate. |

I think the best option is to choose cyber security, and make he have the targeted CGP that can enable him to cross to computer science when get to 200l |

All the listed courses have future prospects. Future is not something of 10-15 years like we used to think. Future changes everyday. He could be doing Cybersecurity and if he gets hands on in mining or block chain that could be what he could stick to or specialize on later. All the courses are inter-related. He just need a foundation from the university, I don't know if their curriculum is strong enough to make him a fit in the real world. He should get the basis, pass their exams but the real learning is in the field. Get on discords, Bootcamps, interns etc. there are millions of real life projects niggar can get busy on. He should back them up with globally recognized certification such as AWS, GCP, Azure and relevant ones. He should be more responsible during the 5 years or so he wants to study in FUTA. |

He should choose the one he has in mind. Us doing the picking will give him an excuse to quit the course and claim it wasn’t his preferred option. |

Go for mining engineering. Very good and marketable course. It's a new course, it was under geology and mining science. |

Firebox123:I can't believe you are saying this. How can biochemistry be paying more than software development in today's world |

GRACEGLORY:This was so true before AI started writing codes. If you know, you know. |

GRACEGLORY:Cyber security has more earning power over software development, and has more prospect abroad. And with AI automation, cyber security is far much more future proof than software dev |

Biochemistry is the odd one out here and not even remotely related to comp science . Why is it a consideration? If his dream is computer science, he should pick a similar course like cyber security, information technology or software development |

Which one does he think he is better wired to ace excellence? That is the one he should go for! Uni is all about the certificate, so if you can get 1st class in languages or religious studies go for it rather than computer science with a 2'2 or worse third class. |

seanwilliam:He is lucky that it doesn't have to be computer science. Let him go for cybersecurity or software development... He will thank his stars that he dint get computer science |

| Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by gabicon: 9:49am On Jul 24, 2025 |
seanwilliam:I will suggest you go broad not niche, the rate at which things are changing, one may finish a degree after 4 years and the field won't be in existence. The important thing is to research the curriculum and tutoring of the options a solid marine engineering degree is better than a crappy computer science degree. |

| Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by Trymeee: 9:57am On Jul 24, 2025 |
He should look into cybersecurity. Everything both in tech and outside tech depends solely on cybersecurity. Even the military lay alot of emphasis on it now. |

| Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by elbulk(m): 10:06am On Jul 24, 2025 |
seanwilliam:Coming from a professional of over 15 years, he should take Information Technology or Software development. Fun part is with either of this, you will still do programming courses as you will need to understand them to be a wholesome professional. These are the closest to his first choice. Truth is I prefer a degree in IT to one in Computer Science. |
| Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by thymm: 10:14am On Jul 24, 2025 |
Avoid biochemistry sha. Mining Engineering is a good course, you can grow into other engineering fields. But software development and cyber security are closer to your preferred CS |

| Re: Which Of These Courses Should He Choose? by Johnchrix(m): 10:20am On Jul 24, 2025 |
Hismercy234:Biochemistry only if you want to be skilless or go in to academia but you have to do it till PhD level to get a good lecturing job. |
