Akpabio, Senate Leader Opeyemi In Shouting Match During Heated Exchange by malali(op): 8:13am On Jul 25, 2025

The tension erupted during an executive session convened to deliberate on whether to adjourn the current legislative sitting this week or next week for the Senate’s traditional two-month annual recess. Sources told SaharaReporters that disagreements among the leadership over the adjournment plan led to visible cracks within the chamber's top hierarchy.

The Nigerian Senate witnessed a dramatic altercation on Wednesday evening as a closed-door session descended into chaos, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele engaging in a shouting match that nearly escalated into a physical confrontation.

It was learnt that Senator Ali Ndume, in a pointed observation, criticised the Senate leadership for failing to hold a prior meeting to unify their position before bringing the matter to the floor.

He reportedly said that was not how things should be done, urging the leadership to show greater coordination.

Ndume’s comment appeared to ignite long-simmering frustrations, as Senate Leader Bamidele publicly voiced his displeasure with Senate President Akpabio’s leadership style.

“I am frustrated as Senate Leader working under Senate President Akpabio,” Bamidele reportedly said in the heated session. “He does not call leadership meetings, he doesn’t consult with anyone. He is autocratic. In fact, I am contemplating resigning as Senate Leader.”

Akpabio, visibly angered by Bamidele’s remarks, fired back sharply.

“Senator Opeyemi should sit down! He cannot speak while I am speaking. I am in charge here,” Akpabio reportedly yelled. “I have served as Commissioner, two-term Governor, Senate Minority Leader, and a powerful Minister. I know the Senate rules and leadership more than you.”

SaharaReporters learnt that as tempers flared, both men appeared ready to confront each other physically before other senators quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation and restore order.

The petty way Senator Akpabio has handled Senator Natasha Akpoti, just makes the whole world know, that Nigerians are in need of a better, more matured, democratic senate president,

Someone who is not ruled by his Ego, someone who you can agree to disagree with.......

Someone who doesn't see a different opinion as a personal attack......

Someone who is okay not being worshiped........

Someone who commands respect without forcefully demanding it from his own party and opposition members .........

Someone who carries everyone along and doesn't bring his ideas from home to the senate and try to enforce it on everyone......

He has denied the people of Kogi Central senatorial representation in the red chambers due to a personal misunderstanding with their Senator....

The main trait of tyrannical leaders is the intolerance of other people opinions or anything they feel threatens their ego.

Well, both Godswill Akpabio and Opeyemi Bamidele are all on-your-mandate-we-stand rubber-stamped stooge jesters. Enjoying their comical power tussle show from here.

I can only guess that the Senate majority leader has raised his discontent with Mr Akpabio privately several times.

How can you lead a Senate and not consult with your co-leaders on important administrative issues.

And then when the man voices out his frustration you tell him to sit down huh Poor temperament.

You have been a legislator and 2 time Governor. What is the relevance of that to you not consulting with other officers.

Akpabio is despotic,he is egoistic and doesn't follow Senate rules.

He abuses power given to him.

He has turned the Senate to his personal property .

He needs to be impeached for sanity to return to the Senate

You served as commissioner...

Governor, minister bla bla bla. Does that give you the right to be authocratic?

That's the talk of a man with a bloated and oversized ego.

His poor leadership style has been evident and for senators to begin to confront him about it shows the extent.

Worse is that he is stooge of tinubu. The Senate has now blended with and is part of the executive.

This is the worst senate in the history of Nigeria!

Tinubu is already laying the groundwork for Akpabio's neutralisation by having his man, Bamidele fight him in the Senate. Only the naïve are unaware of that. IF Tinubu wins his reelection bid, he will cut off and neutralize all the powerbrokers with ambitions or aspirations in favour of his own puppets whom he will prop up to succeed him. The likes of Wike would also be dropped and disgraced. Kwankwaso saw all these in advance and applied his number six. But before doing so, he embarrassed Tinubu by having him drop Ganduje and getting him to come to Kano to bend the knee. You gotta love Jagora!
