In as much as the current rules may seem stringent, we must acknowledge that the Gen Z era has played a role in necessitating them.

The founding fathers envisioned an institution where disciplined, intelligent, and future-ready leaders would be nurtured.

For many years, the culture of discipline, academic excellence, and purposeful activism (aluta) was deeply rooted in the minds of all OAU students. This strong foundation produced alumni who consistently excel and remain outstanding in every sphere of life - even today.

Unfortunately, this culture is gradually fading, and the university's reputation seems to decline daily due to tolerated indiscipline - both from students and, at times, lecturers.

It is time for the university to return to its founding principles. The rules may need adjustments to reflect present-day realities, but discipline must never be compromised. Rules should be firm and enforced to realign the current generation with the core values that made us great.

We have traditions. We do not wake our fathers with sliding tackles.

Some of the rules are outrageous. Imagine getting sanctioned for not ironing your clothes. Na everybody get iron?

The release listed various degrees of unwelcoming dressings noticed among the students especially the Gen Z with varying degrees of punishment including but not limited to expulsion

Church is a public place you enter without examination and rules.university community is different from that. Your dude would no not enter Deeper Life, Mountain of Fire, Apostolic Faith like that and be comfortable. He would not try it in any mosque. See, university is not a place for fashion exhibition, it is a place for learning. When you want to do fashion parade or a model, there is another place for that. In a fashion school, laboratories are not needed. In university, you are awarded certificates for learning, not for how beautiful, or muscular, crazier you are.

This dress code circular from Obafemi Awolowo University is not only draconian in content but embarrassingly sloppy in execution. For an academic institution that prides itself on intellectual excellence, this document is riddled with misspelled words, grammatical blunders and inconsistencies. If you’re going to police students’ appearance with such intensity the bare minimum is to do it with proper English.


Instead of equipping students to face the real world, you’re turning the university into a 1970s military barracks. If OAU put half this energy into fixing hostels, updating curricula, or paying lecturers maybe we wouldn’t be here talking about dress codes written like a failed WAEC essay.

Universities are supposed to prepare students for a diverse and globalized world not shame and punish them into submission. OAU as an institution is clearly stuck in the past

I live in UNILAG, where there is practically no dress code, and you should see the aberration I see on a daily basis by certain students.

I think it is for the students' good,even though it may seem harsh. Just as a good father will discipline his child so he does not go wayward, I think the school is doing this out of love for the students.

I visited the OAU recently and was so disappointed with the spate of infrastructural decay in place. I've been wondering why the school's name had suddenly vanished from the ratings list, not knowing its no more what it used to be. So sad. Our leaders won't go unpunished by God for destroying our education system that made them who they are today.
