Most of the cars we use in Nigeria are imported from Europe, Canada, and the U.S. But are we aware that these same cars — especially popular Japanese brands — can also be purchased from China? Many of the models we get from the West are also available in the East, often at a lower cost, making them potentially more affordable to import. Are there people already doing this in Nigeria, but it’s just not being talked about enough? I’d like to request that this be moved to the front page for wider visibility. I’m planning to buy a car in the coming months and am currently doing my research. Thank you in advance

ishayaauta:I specifically mentioned Japanese brands of cars because I’m not interested in Chinese brands. What I’m saying is that the 2012 Toyota Corolla we usually buy from the U.S. or Canada can also be found in countries like China, Qatar, and the UAE. What I’m unsure about is whether there’s any real difference between them — and that’s why I’m making this post, to get some insight. The East is geographically closer to Africa than the West, which means lower shipping costs. Additionally, prices for these cars in the East are generally cheaper than in the West. Aside from possible differences in durability, I’m not sure what else sets them apart. I’d really appreciate input from more experienced folks here. |

There's nothing wrong. You get value for your money and most are in pristine condition Because they don't export Salvage cars. Their cars are also usually low mileage because distant Travel by road is not common in China as they have the best and largest rail network in the world. Their domestic flights are also very affordable. The sweetest part is that you can order and pay for both shipping with Naira while lying down on your bed. |

Till date we still depend on USD to import from China, over 95% of our USD needs is for import. And 90% of these imports is from China. Pls explain to me why we've to drive ur naira to USD and later to RMB while importing from China. This was the sole reason why I wanted Osibanjo as President, he engineered and introduced direct naira to RMB swap straight from ur Nigerian bank accounts for all imports from China. US Ambassador visited Buhari the subsequent week and frustrated the policy, now it's operating under hush tone, most pple don't even know the policy and executive order exists. Osibanjo's would've single handedly crashed USD demand by over 70%, by now 1 USD would've been 70 naira. It's not like Govt don't know wat to do to get Nigerians out of this mulky waters it's all about vested interests, propaganda and blackmails. Elect a President without baggage and Western strings and experience real developmental strides. |

The maintenance culture in the west is superior to the one in the east. Their roads are better, they have more money to regular servicing. That’s why you can buy a 20 year old car that looks new after a good detailing from the west. We also have more Nigerians in the west than in the east. It’s these individuals that facilitate the purchase, inspection and shipping of the vehicles to Nigeria. |

This is actually a good question. I wonder if the bias of established trade routes play a role. I am not into importing but I’ll love those with practical experience to give their views. |

China cars are cheaper because of lower labour costs compared to American or European counterpart. Economies of scale also has a role to play, Chinese car manufacturers produces at massive scales and benefits from government policies. China also run localised supply chains unlike America and Europe who has more dynamic supply chain, slapping more costs on the product. Does that mean China products are inferior? No, not in this day and age anyway. So, no, there's nothing wrong in buying China made cars. but brand perspective is another kettle of fish. Chukwu who drives a BMW would stunt on his friend who drives a KIA, Mazda etc. Even Europeans are now waking up, I can speak for UK who are now dumping expensive Tesla for better and cheaper China made BYD. But our perceptions as Nigerians/Africans is our problem. Everything European/American is better in our eyes, including their media and propagandas. That's why we have Nigerians supporting the West's atrocities even though we are victims too. |

Because most of the cars you see in Nigeria are stolen cars. Stolen cars are Cheaper to buy than buying from china. Stealing a car in china to export might cost you your life. Also the west has organized/sophisticated auction process/systems that makes buy cars easier than in china https://punchng.com/canada-lauds-customs-for-recovering-65-stolen-cars/?amp https://africa.businessinsider.com/local/lifestyle/interpol-tracks-down-150-stolen-vehicles-from-canada-to-nigeria-other-african/c8lgdf9 |

Because you want to buy a single car, you want to engage Nairalanders on a chochocho marathon? You can be sure that shipping cost from China 🇨🇳 to west africa, Nigeria 🇳🇬 will be 3 times the cost of shipping 🚢 from Europe, thereby canceling the seeming advantage of buying cheaply from China. In fact, a cargo ship from China will have to voyage on 3 different oceans ( Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans) to arrive at our coastal waters. |

First of all, because MOST of the vehicles imported into Nigeria as tokunbo are sourced from America as accident or flood cars or cars with similar problems, they are going to be purchased at a far cheaper rate than if you were to buy in China, where you would likely be buying as 'clean' car. Same applies to other Asian countries. Secondly, the cost of export logistics and shipping costs is also higher because other the longer shipping route. Thirdly, The used car export market seems to be more established in the USA than in Asian countries. Lastly, there's the issue of RHD in countries like Japan. The first picture is a 2008 accord listed at an auction in the US. It has a mechanical fault but clean exterior and interior. Note the buy now price. The second picture is a 2010 accord listed in China. Note the price.

![]() Most Asian cars are right hand drive, which is not acceptable in Nigeria. Furthermore, majority of all the korope you see in Nigeria are from Asia and they are converted to our own left hand drive which is very risky at the long run... |

I come to China very often on business and I am currently here at the moment, having got here early last month. I can authoritatively state that most cars Nigerians import from the US, Europe and UAE are plentiful here in China. The Toyotas, Hondas, Nissans, Benz, Volvo, Audi, Range Rover, etc are all here and much cheaper. In addition, they are mostly in much better mechanical and structural condition because China doesn't have the system of selling salvage/accidented cars to the public like it is done in the US and Europe. And so there is a massive endless supply of pre-owned vehicles at bargain prices. There is a problem however. It is extremely difficult to export used vehicles out of China. The bureaucratic and governmental red tape involved is daunting. EACH vehicle requires an export license before it can be cleared by customs for export. The process can take almost 2 months in some cases and the cost is prohibitive. Sometimes a car is deemed un-exportable by the government and thus cannot be issued an export license. Those that have tried to circumvent this process by hiding the vehicles inside containers have paid a heavy price. Because of this, the massive pool of very clean and cheap used vehicles found all over China just sit down and waste away because no one wants to deal with the hassles involved in exporting them. symbianDON:I don't believe most.. a flooded or accidented car can't last 10 years on Nigerian road. There are cars of more than 3 Nigerian users being sold and they came in as tokunbo |

We don't have right thinking leaders bro. We have greedy people just like Tinubu who hates his people with demonic passion. Whatever will make living cheaper they don't want it, they'll rather favour foreign western policies at the detriment of their people. |

miketayo:Believe it! Ask toks importers who are truthful. There's no way they would break-even if they don't cut corners. Clean non-accident, non-flood cars are very expensive and would be above average market price! Anyway, that's not considering that a number of the cars are also stolen and some used to launder money back into the country. |

TechAI:Trust America and her brothers.. The West has a special agreement with the Chinese government that prohibits the sell of popular Western brands straight to other markets without going through the parent owners of the car companies. Infact, apart from the models from the indigeneous Chinese car companies, most western brands are very costly in China, and that includes the Japanese . This effects their second prices. As per the spare parts, most are already being imported from China .. |
