Today, I went to a restaurant around Shomolu, specifically at the back of Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) in Shomolu, where they sell amala. I had my own bottle of water, but the owner wouldn't allow me to bring it inside because they sell water. When I explained that I might need a specific type of water, or that I had purchased water in bulk, she responded arrogantly. When she told me that I couldn't bring my water in, I asked, "Do you want me to leave?" because of the way she spoke to me, and she responded, "Yes, I want you to leave." This experience left me feeling that the restaurant was not customer-centric and that the owner was unwilling to engage politely.

It’s disappointing to encounter such behavior, especially from someone who deals with perishable goods. I will not be recommending this place to others.

Op what if it was an upscale restaurant would you attempt to bring in a bottle of water, knowing the house rules?
Every restaurant has house rules. If you can't follow them don't go

Op, aside the normal "we sell our water" , it goes beyond open eyes.
If you are an experienced amala eater from days back you will understand jazz is involved. Some of them believe you will spoil their jazz if you bring items into their restaurants, it way be part of the rules of the juju.
What is the juju done for, it is to attract customers to the joint. Back in the day juju was not hidden in amala joints, once you enter you lookup by the roof of the entrance door the juju will be clearly displayed. Infact we then will like to see the juju as it means the amala will be sweet, the only thing is the owner should not make it too potent that it will turn belle lol.
Over time people got wise and started getting scared of the juju, so those joint stated covering them with wood so you will not see, but an experience person will know when you see a wooded structure with key above the entrance. In recent days you no longer see the juju, it is well masked.
Why do you think that lady will refuse to sell food to you that will have cost over 4k just because of 150-300 bottle water? Mama no want make you spoil her jazz which will cost her more in sales and to rectify it.
The way you guys reason though, so twisted. 😐

Same thing happened to me in Benin. As I order for food for myself and like 10 people. The woman say make I wait. I waited for over 25 minutes but no attendance. I had to leave cos the food I ordered was worth like 185k. Her eyes clear when I drove off. I had to go to airport road for goat yam pepper soup at ogologo place. I was served well. Leave them if they're arrogant
Re: Frustrating Experience At Amala Joint At Shomolu by Datbadtguy: 9:38pm On Jul 25, 2025
You did right. If 185k isn’t enough to get service, bounce. Ogọdọlongọ earned your money.

Perhaps there's something mysterious about her water to capture customers? Holding such a policy may not be an ordinary business strategy, who knows?

What scale restaurant doesn’t allow a bottle water at hand. Mention the name of the upscale restaurant where you will be told to stop your bottle of water outside.

Bottle of water that people work around carelessly work around with.

Y’all just like exaggerating things or do you think we talking about a carton of bottled water?

Holding water is a turn off? Where please. Mention names of specific places.

Yeah I expected some of you to think that way. What you don't know you don't. You are likely a recent generation person so it is expected for you to doubt what I wrote.
Oga as at the late 80s, 90s even early 2000s there was no amala joint you will enter without seeing juju openly displayed at the entrance, just above the door. What do you think it was kept there for? Are you saying you have never seen it before?

Please stop calling it standard. You are abusing the word.

What standard is it that, whenever you have a bottle of water at hand, you can not walk into a restaurant.

Are we all sane here? A bottle of water in hand is a turn off for a restaurant owner?

That’s the highest level of illiteracy, ignorance and wickedness.

I don’t think anyone would buy water because he is going to eat. It definitely would be a something out of thought.

So having a bottle of water at hand is now a crime if you must venture to eat?

Damn! You lots support ills.
You don't need to type epistle to pass your message across. I know the country is hard truly.

My message is simple- Go to Yakoyo and try to take in a bottle of water and see how they will prevent you from doing such. The same thing is applicable in all hotels I have been to in Lagos.

Let's reason am - tolerating people to bring in drinks to my hotel is like encouraging them not to buy the ones being sold in the same hotel.

Everything is not spiritual bro. Businesses are run with strategies that favour the owners.

Mention the hotels that don’t allow people hold water into their premises cos you feel you talking to a novice.

Tell me one hotel where I will be bounced if I am holding a bottled water.

That’s not strategy but illiteracy! Sheraton, BW, FP or Protea won’t bounce me because I am holding a bottled water.

KFC and other eatery will not, and you telling me a local Amala joint will refuse to sell because I am holding a bottled water and that’s strategy.

A customer coming to patronize you without even knowing how much he is bringing in will be bounced for holding a bottled water!

Are we sane here!

I live in Shomolu,We have A new amala joint Iya Basira Alamala @ fakorede road,Abiodun B/stop.. we have Amoke Oge @ Oguntolu road close to elediye b/stop. They are standard joint.. The one you are talking about is not popular.. In Amoke you must be on the queue. Whether they are using juju or not, that one has been happening even Before Nigeria got independence.. Its God that is saving us from all food sellers both rice sellers, beans seller, whether ibo, yoruba, Benin, delta all tribe are guilty of it. and finally all food sellers are arrogant and they talk carelessly.

Well this shows you are not accustomed to fine dinning. Other wise you won't come and type this thing.
For example, restaurants as small as yellow chillis won't even let u bring an empty bottle in.
That's even a far cry lets go a little lower, try regular bars(not clubs) you will already see notice pasted on the wall that says foods and drinks from outside are not allowed

As a business person why would I allow u to bring in what I sell from outside? Today it's water, tomorrow u might be bringing your own amala.

For her to insist that you must buy her water and even asked you to leave is enough reason to conclude that she's using juju to sell.

Maybe part of the instruction is that she must not welcome anything she didn't rub the juju on or else it can spoil her business. That's why she had no problem letting you go.

Most of the restaurants and hotels in the south here have been doing same for some time now especially the ones with swimming pools. Even If you want to only swim you are not even allowed to go in with water.

Whenever i want to host friends We usually go on weekdays when customers are not much because they wouldn't want to turn customers away or my girlfriends and I will just reason with any of the cool staff around.

Last time we did, I almost had it with one managers self because he saw a different brand of can water in my table which one of the staff permitted.

I am surprised this is a shocker for lagosians abi na Nairalanders lol.
