Hi Fam,

What will be considered an adequate Mo thly pocket money for an undergraduate in a Nigerian tertiary institution today? Whether university or polytechnic or college of education?
The expectation is to cook every now snf then and will be given food stuffs periodically.

Also interested in this. Response using a University or the area the University is located will be welcomed.

so many factors to be considered, the location of the university, is the person staying off campus, the course the person is offering etc

Off campus accommodation. Just a regular degree like economics or accounting. Nothing expensive or prolonged like medicine and architecture.
So the question is based in an average at today's current state.
Rent is NOT included.
Just regular pocket money for feeding, occasional transport, small daily purchases. Just regular day to day living cost.

Student's Financial Obligations (Aside handouts) :
- Airtime
- Data
- Transport
- Pocket Money
- . . . . . . . .

Just place the student on the current minimum wage

It depends on location. What's applicable in UNIMIAD will definitely be insufficient for student in UNILAG.

It's actually depends on how rich the particular families are so

The person needs to eat well, flex well and enjoy their life's so that their brain can work well. .

120k at the very least. 30k weekly.. at the very very least.. because it's expected that the person should be able to augment for himself one way or the other. No be say e reach

Around 40k and 50k monthly should suffice and this should only be for his 100 and 200 level. By 300 level, the money should be deliberately reduced so as to enable the student get more sense and to prepare him for life after school.

60k a month. If no food stuff than 120k a months to live comfortably.

But if na suffer head kind of living. 20-30k and 60k with no food stuff. Mind you, you will need to work side hassle to support or you will turn to beggar.

School no easy again for this APC administration

If you plan to change your wardrobe every now and then. Guy you might going to class twice a week. Girls are now into prostitution and young men fraudsters to sustain themselves.

It's really hard to determine because a student doesn't only need money for food and transportation, there other aspects he still need money for

In a school like UNN, you need like averagely 50k per month

Apologies you feel that way. No be about validation. Na genuine question. I went to Uni in the early 2000s with average monthly pocket money if 7 to 10k.

The emphasis is on average. For an average student from an average family.

You left out a lot of things. Things like light bill.

During my university days I was paying N500 every month. That was my own share of the bill; photocopy money for materials, refilling of gas, soap, cream, toothpaste, detergent...etc.

Like someone said, it would be wise to place the person on minimum wage.

What about the cost of provisions, transportation to and from the market, etc? Give at least Naira 120,000 a month.

You're not serious at all!
120k to a student who's not a family man o. Do you know that some family people don't earn upto 120k monthly yet, they still feed their families.

Once you give him or her enough food stuff, 30k monthly stipend is far enough to help instill sense of responsibility in that child. But always ensure you replenish the food stuff when due!

I like your perspective but 20k is small. That is less than 1k daily.

Give them 1 million if you have it. Most of us went to school managing as soon as we're able to get the school fees from parent and food stuffs. Even na 2 naira them put on top the school fees, that's our pocket money. God bless and provide to those parents that despite not having enough are striving hard to see that their ward succeed. Thank God for today.

Calculate the way you spend at home and total it, then divide.

For instance, if you are up to four at home, Father, mother, 2 children, and you spend up to 300k for house needs monthly, divide that 300k into four, the answer is what you'll give to that child in school.

Needs like ailments are emergency needs no one prays for it to come, so as parents, have a separate savings for medical bill should in case the child falls sick and send to him.

If it's monthly allowance asides school fees and accomodation, it could vary between #50 000 to #100 000 depending on the location.

What are they selling that they must be spending 1k daily in school? Once accommodation is secured, school fees paid, food is supplied, student should know how to manage what they have depending on their home.

2005 my cousin was getting 50k monthly with food stuffs and other basics. 50k was big money back then, she had an official car and a driver. Lucky her, i told her.

She is now a SAN. Working as a judge. This life favours the rich only
