Hi Fam,

What will be considered an adequate Mo thly pocket money for an undergraduate in a Nigerian tertiary institution today? Whether university or polytechnic or college of education?
The expectation is to cook every now snf then and will be given food stuffs periodically.
For a university that students are not allowed to cook I ll say not less than 150k

I like your perspective but 20k is small. That is less than 1k daily.
Like I said... Food stuff is adequate not in excess...

All payment in skl is done by the house... Not the child... Just pocket money u call it bar... 35k per months is what we targeted.. but sends only 20k each month till she calls again...

The. U can as questions before u send... But u see that food stuffs.. we send them twice a semester... Full package, and support package just before exams ( the last one month

Data, we subscribe for her from home a fixed monthly sub... Glo Always On package of 7k ...

That's all

Na u know how deep your pocket be, no amount will ever be enough, that's just the truth
I don't agree with you. It's a valid topic and it's good for parents to have an idea what other parents are giving their wards. Makes no sense to dismiss it because you don't see the need of it.

Off campus accommodation. Just a regular degree like economics or accounting. Nothing expensive or prolonged like medicine and architecture.
So the question is based in an average at today's current state.
Rent is NOT included.
Just regular pocket money for feeding, occasional transport, small daily purchases. Just regular day to day living cost.
whatever Is currently the equivalent of 10,000 naira in 2013.

Initially my son monthly money was 30k.
It was taking him until the end of the month.
But since this Tinubu government came in, I increased it to 60k, he complained it was not enough.
I later increased it to 80k, after daily cost of transportation and other expenses, still not enough.
We have to reach an understanding to peg it at 100k.
No Thanks to Tinubu at all.

See them saying 40k, 60k, even 120k but average salary earner in Nigeria is getting little above 50k
Oga na average salary be that, but people find a way to get other income by hook or crook. Eg my former gate men weh been de earn 80 and 70k de buy laptop, buy okada, go enter supermarket de buy sardines, bread with chilled 5 alive to wash am down. Last last security for main gate stop Korope by 5am with 7 kegs of diesel. Omo my gatemen be diesel marketers, once I buy diesel for gen, then go offload half for black market. Lol
Anyway realistically speaking despite accommodation and 2 times a day paid for feeding for my kids school, averagely not less than 100k de go ontop each of their head. 50k bulk money each then the rest comes in bits, eg 10k every 5 or so days.

What you would give a student in a public university is different from what you would give to a private university student.

In public schools, you can buy food in cheap shops. Never like this in private schools. Cost of food in the private is something else.

You are talking of 120k when the majority of the students don’t even see 20k per month.

A student who prepares food at home will live ok with 30 or 40k per month.

Remember, the country's minimum wage is 70k per month. I know things are expensive in this country, but 120k is on the high side for an average student.

If the parents are rich, that will be another story.

We wey dey collect 7k no foodstuffs weekly yet dem dey complain say we no sabi manage money. Still expect make we graduate easy & come out with first class because them done manage pay school fees.
Poor man pikin done see shege kiss
BodePolScience:
Around 40k and 50k monthly should suffice and this should only be for his 100 and 200 level. By 300 level, the money should be deliberately reduced so as to enable the student get more sense and to prepare him for life after school.
Re: What Is An Adequate Monthly Pocket Money For University Student by Ofekongsk(m): 7:33pm On Jul 26, 2025
7k to 10k in early 2000s?
I was receiving same amount from 2017 to 2023. No foodstuffs, no accomodation. Just school fees paid
Veryniceguy01:
Apologies you feel that way. No be about validation. Na genuine question. I went to Uni in the early 2000s with average monthly pocket money if 7 to 10k.

The emphasis is on average. For an average student from an average family.

How much are the parents themselves earning? If they now have more than one child in school, where would they be getting 240k or 360k pocket money for the children monthly? That's aside tuition fees, text books, accommodation, clothes plus their own living expenses
Re: What Is An Adequate Monthly Pocket Money For University Student by wallrichy:
Note that in my son's school.....university......they don't allow cooking in the hostels.....they have canteens within the school.....the School is Redeemed University, Ede, Oshun State

That's what I give to my son too in a private university(150k). I always split the money by giving him twice in every week. I can't imagine him not having enough money for transport, feeding etc...an average meal in that school cost nothing less than 3/4k, just average and not to your satisfaction. Also, transport within the school cos the school has accommodation for their students. I also stock up his provision store for the semester and once in a while still send money for some little expenses that comes up.......and pls take note, it's not excessive. Things are damn so expensive In this country and I can't throw my son out to be in need cos I want him to learn that it's not easy to get the money......he knows anyway that it's not easy and of course he shows appreciation......The school is Redeemed University....

Poor man pikin..10k-20k monthly..
Average family..50k-80k monthly..
Rich family..300k and above...
Re: What Is An Adequate Monthly Pocket Money For University Student by Ferdinandu(m): 11:04pm On Jul 26, 2025
There is no defined amount. It depends on your parents pocket. Years back in school my pocket money was 7k monthly but my roommate always complain that the 7k his parents gives him weekly wasn't enough.

10k could buy an original Nike pair then, so that’s the equivalent of 70k now

I was given 30k a month as of 2019.
Re: What Is An Adequate Monthly Pocket Money For University Student by Dijita: 6:17am On Jul 27, 2025
I have 5 kids(nephews/cousins) in university/polytechnic. I give between 25k to 50k every month for feeding allowance. Exam period and special expenses are taken care of separately. They don't have time to cook during exams, hence the addition of #10k to 20k.
The one in Delta state University is the one getting #25k. He is a photographer/videographer so supplementing with his side hustle. two in Lagos #50,000 each. two in Ogun state are living together. they are brother and sister getting #70,000. Last year 23/24,I was giving #25k to one cousin before graduating. He was in kwara poly, I latter discovered he was sending #5000 to his mother from the allowance. Good kisd will always understand the situation of his/her family.
My advice, give what you are able to give he/she. Some of us went to school without getting any allowance. It was hard but we survive.

Such universities still exist?

I think its only in the school hostel that does that kind of stuff.
Outside campus lodge, you can cook your food or meals peacefully.

Why not do it like this. Send physical adequate foodstuff to him. Pay all his departmental bills, textbooks and any other academic bills including hostel fee.
Then simply send him pocket money. Just pocket money you feel will be okay, because you have already transport foodstuff to him.

You're not serious at all!
120k to a student who's not a family man o. Do you know that some family people don't earn upto 120k monthly yet, they still feed their families.

Once you give him or her enough food stuff, 30k monthly stipend is far enough to help instill sense of responsibility in that child. But always ensure you replenish the food stuff when due!
how much do you think is food stuff? I said comfortably
