So will it now be more than 266k?

something I wrote when it was 89k and I got an 8.5 overall. It still expired while waiting to use it for immigration.

If they are increasing the price, thy can as well increase the years of validity.

Rubbish!
If it's Canada your overall score doesn't matter, individual scores matters

I still cringe at the fact that a person who was taught in English and wrote exams in English language from nursery to university BSC/masters degree level must "prove" that he can read and write in the same English language which also happens to be the Lingua Franca of Nigeria and the official language in every state.

Apart from the business model I don't see how this makes sense in 2025.

Then to make it worse, they put an expiry date to it. So if I pass writing and reading today will I suddenly forget how to read and write English in two/three years? Its rip off and these are the questions that our ministry of foreign affairs should be asking.

Perhaps we should also make foreigners that are applying for our visa to read and write in Hausa/Yoruba/Igbo etc before we give them visa??
Solid point ☝️

If nothing is done about this, IELTS will reach 500k. I wrote mine in 2023 in Portharcourt @ 94k. Today it's 266k nawa.

For those coming abroad to work or even study, go to your school, get a English proficiency recommendation letter with school letter head and stamp.
..it's the devaluation of the naira and rising inflation in the country that caused it.. inflation has affected every sector in Nigeria

Have you not seen graduates speaking and writing jargons? It is called English proficiency test. They want to be sure you can COMMUNICATE effectively in your area of expertise and not waste the time of their citizens or cause them undue distress.
Your attention span is also tested

I was ignorantly waiting in the pool for a general draw with a CRS of 481 since April 2023. By the time I realised category draw was the way forward, a year had gone by. I opted for transport draw in 2024 which aligned with my work experience. However, when I did, they stopped doing transport draw while we kept waiting. It was early this year, I finally figured out healthcare was the way (will always be constant and in demand). So I did an HCA course and started internship at an hospital as a nursing aide. Unfortunately, IELTS expired in April 2025. Been so discouraged to rewrite but the recent HC draw of 22nd July is motivating me again as I will be on CRS 464 if I can ace the test a second time, having lost 17 points from 3 birthdays (May 2023, May 2024 and May 2025). The current price is still discouraging though.

Are you currently in the pool? What's your CRS? What CBD are you aligned to?

This is the site I used to practice. https://www.ielts-writing.info/EXAM/practice_tests/

For speaking, don't stop speaking until the examiner asks you to. You won't score less than 7. Reading is the toughest; I usually start from 28-40 before attempting 1-27.

All the best

Do you intend to sit for the Academic or General Test?

I sat for GT, so I am not sure I have the authority to speak on the Academic test.

Let's begin from there

I think you should try the provincial nominee program for New Brunswick or Alberta. Honestly, any province that isn't Ontario or British Columbia should be good. CEC is a lot harder than it used to be.
I moved to Canada 2 years ago and got my PR last year.

True about PNP. I was already mulling the idea as I have strong ties; two siblings (now citizens) in Alberta. Congratulations on your PR bro. I'm glad to hear that. Hope to share same news very soon too.

If you have siblings in Alberta, just stick to it; it should be a lot easier there than in other provinces.
Thanks, bro. Amen, you will get yours soon

Of what need is this exam sef if I may ask?
As in, why is it imposed on us to write it when travelling out?

I want to just know the relevance, i am not attacking it.

Just curious. This is my second time hearing of the exam.

Hold your Minister for Foreign Affairs, Minister for Education and Minister for Interior responsible. They all have to do something about this. It's appalling. Imagine non-English speaking countries asking you to provide Language Proficiency in English Language certificate meanwhile you have been speaking English all your life!
