Since the inaugural WAFCON tournament in 1998, only three nations; Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, and South Africa, have lifted the coveted Women’s Africa Cup of Nations trophy.
Nigeria has been the dominant force in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) since 1998, a reign they emphatically reaffirmed with their latest victory.
In a dramatic final held on July 26, 2025, the Super Falcons staged a stunning comeback, overcoming a two-goal deficit against hosts Morocco to clinch their record victory. This historic win, with a final score of 3-2, further solidifies Nigeria's status as the queens of African women's football. Let's look into the winners of Africa's most prestigious women's football tournament.

Nice, other african countries should sit up....let the game be more competitive and interesting....this is why we don't do well at the world stage.

There are only two nations in Wafcon, Nigeria and the rest.

Even if Nigeria did not win again, I don't see any country bearing this record in the next 20yrs

This is massive, this means Nigeria has failed to lift the trophy only three times since inception

Modified: And there's been only 13 editions in total. 9ja won 10 out of 13. This is really massive!

If it's the male counterpart that has won the trophy this number of times, will you tell them to stop?
It's not about the Nation that is winning it, it's about the players and coaches.
In each tournament, they are different players and coach so very play and coach want to win a trophy.

The consistency is worth mentioning but the gap is gradually being closed up by other countries whose women football are also waking up

We have to translate this dominance to the world stage and it's going to be a massive work for any coach to do

Congratulations girls!

At least, this one no be Abacha. Dem say na Abacha dey make Nigeria win cup and football match. Clowns. National politics has very little to do for a good football team. Who knows Brazil and Spain president?

Wake me up when we start beating England, Spain, Germany, Sweden etc.

We need to look beyond Africa now.

This idea of beating Zambia 5-0, only to go and lose with 0-5 against Sweden, Netherlands or England in the World cup has to addressed.

We actually do very well at the world stage on all levels if you really have been following female football world wide since in the past.

When did Nigeria lose 5-0 to any of these countries? Nigeria is doing very, very well in the world stage.

Go through the records.

Morocco for example have invested so much in the female football. It's a top priority to them. Their recent coach is a world class coach that won the last world cup for Spain. They hosted the 2022 Afcon, this one and hopefully the next.

The thing is, Nigeria has a lot of potentials one which out numbers other African countries in this game.

This year own was more competitive and attracted more publicity. Other African countries are waking up and it will continue to be tough for Nigeria unlike the previous years. The awareness is awesome now. Africa girls have started playing football now.

How much did Morocco invest in the first place? I wouldn't be surprised if it is much less than the yearly budget of some of their big clubs.
Again, Morocco is just one of 52 countries.
No one really care about female football.
Nigeria is always great at things no one else cares about.
