Water-resistant Vs Waterproof – Do You Know The Difference? by Khay2(op): 5:38pm On Jul 20, 2025
Let’s talk about something that still confuses a lot of people—the difference between water-resistant and waterproof phones.

I’ve seen so many people treat their phones like they’re waterproof just because it says “IP68” or “IP69” on the spec sheet. But honestly, there’s a big difference.

Here’s a quick breakdown:
🔹 Water-resistant = Can handle light splashes, rain, or short accidental drops in water.
🔹 Waterproof = Can survive full submersion, but no phone is truly waterproof forever.

I recently came across the realme brand, particularly the realmeC75, and from what I’ve read, it has an IP69 rating, which is impressive, especially for a midrange phone. I haven’t used it personally, but I’ve seen people say it holds up well around water and dust. Still, I don’t think I’d be brave enough to test any phone in a swimming pool, even if it’s rated that high 😂

Sometimes brands advertise water protection, but people forget it’s more for accidental stuff—like rain, handwashing splashes, or sweaty pockets—not deep diving or recording underwater TikToks 😅

So I’m curious:
🔸 Have you ever mistakenly treated your phone like it was waterproof?
🔸 Do you check for IP ratings when buying a new device?
🔸 And if anyone here has actually used the realme C75, how water-resistant is it in real-life use?

Personally, I think water resistance is great for peace of mind, especially in a country like Nigeria where dust, rain, and “accidents” are a regular part of life.

Let’s clear up the confusion, what do YOU think the difference is between water-resistant and waterproof?

💡 I’ll also drop a short IP rating explanation in the comments for anyone who wants to understand the numbers better.

🔍 Quick Guide to IP Ratings (What Those Numbers Mean):

IP = Ingress Protection (how well your device resists dust/water)
It's usually written like IP67, IP68, IP69, etc.

The first digit is for dust:
5 = Dust protected
6 = Fully dust tight

The second digit is for water:
7 = Can survive being submerged up to 1 meter for 30 mins
8 = Can go deeper than 1 meter (depending on manufacturer)
9 = Protection from high-pressure water (like jets or steam)

👉 So an IP69 phone means:
Totally dustproof ✅
Can handle powerful water jets & extreme conditions ✅

Water-resistant ≠ Waterproof. One is about surviving accidents, the other is wishful thinking.😌

Hmm I don't use to bother much before about the IP rating in devices but with the recent videos I've been seeing with the realme devices, I think I will start putting a lot of interest into it

Do you want to use the phone forever or won't it be changed... Unnecessary attention

yeahhh, waterproof has time limit but water resistance doesn't

Is IP69 the highest rating for waterproof phones? And how does that compare to IP67 or IP68?
Re: Water-resistant Vs Waterproof – Do You Know The Difference? by StellaGirlie: 12:58am On Jul 27, 2025
If a phone is waterproof, why do brands still say ‘don’t intentionally submerge’? Marketing or real limitation?
Re: Water-resistant Vs Waterproof – Do You Know The Difference? by StellaGirlie: 12:59am On Jul 27, 2025
Also how many people here have actually tested their ‘waterproof’ phones in real-life accidents? Did it survive?

It's actually watertto a great extent. Nobody's phone is staying in water pass 2 hours no matter the incident. And this last 40+ hours of immersion

but I came an ad that said it was tested for 30 days underwater.
If any phone can pass an intense test don't you think it would be safe for diving and underwater Tiktoks?

broo why would you want to intentionally submerge your phone before 😭, they just trying to tell us that incase it accidentally falls into water you don't have to worry not to actually throw your phone in water nau

So we're saying that water-resistant phones will never go bad no matter how many times it falls into water?

I wouldn't count much about deep dives, to the best of my knowledge most devices doesn't do well with the pressure of anything below 30m, so yeah it would pull off stunts in shallow water but anything more than that is in doubt.

Water-resistant means survive a splash. Waterproof? That’s survive underwater, big difference!

Most of these phones are just water-resistant. Better don’t try to test it in the pool 😂

IP69 on a midrange phone like realme C75? That’s actually solid!
Re: Water-resistant Vs Waterproof – Do You Know The Difference? by Desewa08: 6:05pm On Aug 03, 2025
realme C75x is legit! Mine survived a kitchen sink fall... no issues. But I still won’t test it twice

I use my phone while cooking so IP rating gives me small peace of mind 🙏

Nigeria’s dust and random rainstorms make water resistance a must, not a luxury

I once took my phone to the beach thinking it was waterproof… now it only vibrates on full moon 😩
