Six Arrested in Lagos Over Fake Street Lottery Scam, Student Loses Phone and ₦100,000

The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit, commonly known as the Taskforce, has arrested six individuals suspected of operating a fraudulent lottery scheme at Iyana-Ipaja. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The suspects — Amaike Nelson, Kenneth Opuana, Oguntade Olusegun, Ogologo Obi, Goodluck Abel, and Oluwafunmilayo Adebimpe — were apprehended after authorities received intelligence about their street-based scam targeting unsuspecting members of the public with a rigged number-picking game disguised as a lottery.

According to the Taskforce, one of the victims, a 19-year-old student identified as Rukayat Kamilu, was lured into the trap when a member of the syndicate posed as a confused participant and asked for her assistance in picking a supposed “winning number.” Upon engaging, the group seized her mobile phone and demanded ₦100,000 for its return.

Acting on a tip-off, operatives led by Taskforce Chairman CSP Adetayo Akerele raided the scene and arrested all six suspects. Several empty Android phone boxes believed to be used as props for the fraudulent operation were recovered at the location.

In a statement, CSP Akerele condemned the criminal act and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining public safety in Lagos.

“We are determined to safeguard Lagosians from these con artists. Street fraud and extortion will not be tolerated,” he said.

The suspects were arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court on charges of conspiracy, theft, gambling, and extortion. They all pleaded guilty and have been remanded in custody pending the next court hearing scheduled for August 7, 2025.

The Lagos Taskforce is urging residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious street activities to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

They have several ways of doing it.
Go to most popular mechanic villages and streets in Lagos. You will see them with lottery numbers on papers and household items like soap, vegetable oil etc - all up for win and people are falling for it.
Re: Six Arrested In Lagos Over Fake Street Lottery Scam, Student Loses Phone And ₦10 by kingthreat(m): 8:47am On Jul 28, 2025
Old scam. They just tell you to pick a number and once you lose it, they seize your phone. Saying you just played their lottery. Before you know it, many of them are around you and they tell you to go and get money to regain your phone or money.
This is indirect robbery. The police have known about these urchins for a long time. Infact, the last time someone complained about it, there was a police van nearby. It's obvious they pay the police. I hope Lagos can be cleared of these criminals. They should return back to their villages and do farm work if they are unemployed.

You should have followed up by reporting them to the police like the lady did to get them arrested. We have a right to insist justice is done.

Nigerians need to be reminded on daily basis that, the law exists, and also, you just can't do anyhow just because you believe you have money or have connections, and even with your connections and money, you can't escape social media and activist groups, when you go against the law.

Oga what exactly do I stand to gain by lying? So out of the thousands of streets in Lagos, I picked Ikosi road just to lie?
See talk abeg, so you were always on Ikosi road, knowing what was happening there 24/7?
I attended Ikosi Junior high School and Ikosi Senior high school and have lived in Alapere all my life till now sef.
So Mr. Man, what exactly do I stand to gain by lying about an event that happened to me years back?
