It’s A Shame Nigerian Leaders Die Abroad, Are Flown Back As Cargo. - Hon Ogah by Metrix147(op): 8:38am On Jul 28, 2025
A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Amobi Godwin Ogah, has expressed deep concern over the continued reliance of Nigerian leaders on foreign healthcare, describing it as a national embarrassment, ABN TV reports.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPA1uWZ5lQ0

He spoke in defense of his proposed bill, which seeks to bar public and civil servants from patronizing private schools and healthcare services, both in Nigeria and abroad.

Ogah, who represents Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency of Abia State, made the remarks during a live interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, referencing the recent death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose body was flown back to Nigeria after he died in a London hospital.

“You are aware that a few days ago, our former president was flown back as cargo,” Ogah said. “Is it not a shame that at each point in time, our big men travel abroad for medical services? Are we not ashamed of it?”

The lawmaker decried the persistent neglect of public hospitals and schools by those in power, insisting that such a trend must be reversed through bold legislative reforms and a renewed commitment to fixing the system from within.

Ogah is the sponsor of the Private Institutions and Healthcare Service Providers (Prohibition) Bill, 2025 (HB.2487), a legislative proposal aimed at compelling public officials and their families to utilize the same schools and healthcare facilities available to the general public. The bill has sparked national debate, drawing praise from transparency advocates and criticism from those concerned about its scope.

According to Ogah, the time has come for the political elite to restore public trust by subjecting themselves to the same institutions they are responsible for managing.

During Babangida's regime, I learnt that his wife gave birth in St. Nicolas Hospital.
It is the fear of being killed (because they know that's the only thing they deserve for their actions) that make these politicians run abroad for medical treatments, we have competent
medical practitioners

It's very heartbreaking.
They abandoned the health system they were meant to build with all the resources at their disposal and now return as cargo.
How many more lives must we lose before they learn that no amount of money can buy life when systems fail?

They go around shouting patriotism. They have very little faith in a better nigeria but they will cheat and kill to rule the same country they've no faith in.

The worst of us rule us

This observation is entirely correct. My uncle, who passed away earlier this year, was flown back from the United States as cargo. We paid all the necessary duties associated with importing a body into the country.

We covered the importation fee, customs fee, and various other charges—essentially the same payments required for normal imports of goods. They classify this process as a waybill, which I find extremely disturbing.

It's most likely the present president would not die in Nigeria.Even if that happens,he would still be flown overseas for further check ups and confirmation. That is the situation we find ourselves in the country. They build hospitals they don't want to use.Nigerian is only a burial ground for the political elite.

The only thing missing that we seriously need to find how to bring back is our sense of shame. If we have shames somethings would have been long addressed

It is very disheartening particularly for Buhari who banned public officers from accessing healthcare abroad (even though it was never applied in reality) to die abroad. He was a perfect definition of hypocrisy.

Very shameful. It speaks a lot. Our leaders don't believe in the system, wondering why they want to govern by force

The Late PMB was not flown back as cargo. He came in the cabin. But the point is well noted and supported.

Majority of Nigeria citizens are essentially shameless and so as the saying goes Majority carries the day....shameless people are in the majority and that why u will see shameless and poor citizens defending the equally shameless leaders.....we claimed to be independent nation but our leaders run to Europe to get basic medical care and we are not ashamed to defend them

“Flown back as a cargo…”

This doesn’t sound right…we can do better as a country. Governance shouldn’t be that hard when done rightly with the right intention.

It is so sad. They embezzle funds, transport the funds abroad, destroy institutions here, refuse to pay Doctors their proper salaries, travel abroad to be attended to by the same Nigerian Doctors and nurses, die there and are cargoed back for burial.

Shameless leaders.

Well the citizens don't seem to be bothered much about this embarrassment, they are too busy with xenophobia and racism from far away lands grin grin.

Nigerian leaders are the luckiest leaders among the 10 biggest economies in Africa grin grin...they can mess up and the country would be quiet or focusing on how other leaders elsewhere percieve ,treat and welcome Nigerians grin grin grin grin grin grin

In my next life I wish to rule over Nigerians grin

Nigerians hostel to make money so you xan decide what you want. Medical tourism is not about country it is about perso al choice. In Kuwait the rich there preferred Nigeria medical doctors and many Americans preferred Germany and many Europeans and Americans preferred Asia. Most leaders who are very old may not be flown to any where because he no.lo ger decides for himself at that stage. No law can forbid an individual to seek medical treatment any where he feels would be better for him. What those who don't go to hospital or takes any medicationhuh? You can call for our local hospitals to be equipped but who are the ones that will manage it? Govt or Individual Nigerians huh That will stole everything in the hospital to open their own hospital. The truth is Nigerians are pretenders. Make a law they will say no don't make a law they will mba. I remember when govt wanted to stop doctors working in govt own hospitals not to own private clinics same Nigerians are the ones backing the do tors to ho on strike. Honestly more of Nigeria problems are the citizens themselves
